Mountain Breeze
The breeze that came down from the mountains during the
third week in May was sweet, filled with the fragrance of melting
snow and thawing earth. We had already experienced this in
Racine, but now in the mountains surrounding Yellowstone and
Idaho; this freshening scent came to us again. As the earth
awakens we are aware of the promise of growth.
This certainly has been true of our family. Our newest
grandchild, Mary Mae, was born in Bismarck, North Dakota on
April 26 and our new English setter puppy was ready for pick up in
Island Park, Idaho on May 20th
. So we headed the Subaru
northwest. First we stopped for several days to meet Mary Mae.
She is a sweetie and every time she opened her eyes, rarely, she
drew a crowd.
Then we drove on to Yellowstone, our first visit to this
most incredible place. We organized our trip priorities in three
categories: Geology, Wildlife, and History and we prioritized them
in that order. The geology of Yellowstone is beyond amazing.
Technically we were walking in a live volcano with a caldera that
measures 34 to 45 miles – a so called: Super Volcano. Steam,
geysers, mud pots, mud volcanoes, boiling hot acidic springs and
pools change the landscape daily. Instead of visiting a place to see
what nature has done, here we see what nature is doing. On our
wildlife day we drove through the famous Lamar Valley
commonly called the Serengeti of North America. We had
incredible luck. We saw 500 bison at one time not to mention
close encounters in our vehicle with buffalo walking right
alongside of us – and it freaked me out when mother buffalo turned
her head and gave me a serious stare at 5 yards as she walked past
with her newborn calf. “Please don’t look at me that way and
don’t ram my car.”
One is not to approach a grizzly bear closer than 100 yard
distant but what happens when you come upon one that is only 30
yards away? You freeze, take a picture, and back away – as did
we. Fortunately it was eating newly emerging vegetation and we
July 2016 – Page 3
were close to our car. That would not be the end of our grizzly
encounters, we saw another big male at 40 yards and then later a
mother with two of this year’s cubs about 300 yards away, one
cub stood to give us a good look.
We also saw two black bears; one was a mother with the
previous year’s cubs both of which were cinnamon colored. We
viewed an active wolf den, mother moose with new baby, elk,
antelope – trumpeter swans, a great day, all the while we were
surrounded by snow covered mountains – and the fresh breeze that
came to us.
What to name our new puppy? This had been an ongoing
discussion. I keep a long list of dog names but nothing seemed to
fit and everything I liked was vetoed by members of the family
including our children who assumed they had both voice and vote.
We even had the church staff work on it and it was Holly, our
Faith and Life Director, who came up with the name: “Breeze.”
Breeze because that is the way setters move through the aspen
woods, Breeze as in the way the breeze gives motion to the
feathering on their legs and tail. Breeze, and since she was coming
from the mountains and since we often encountered the Mountain
breezes on our trip, Mountain Breeze sounded quite right.
Even as the mountain breeze came to us again and again,
when we got to the kennel and met the puppies, we had the choice
of three females; one immediately ran to us wanting up, licking our
faces, and chewing on my beard, as if to say: “Pick me!” “Pick
me!” The other two were kind of a passive: “Whatever?” The
second visit the following day produced more of the same and so
we picked the small female who loved us and we brought a
Mountain Breeze home with us, but first a return stop in Bismarck.
In a mere week Mary Mae’s growth was evident. Her eyes were
open more, her cheeks were broadening. Our grandchildren
Audrey and James were so eager to see the puppy our primary task
was to see that Breeze survived the encounter. “Don’t hold the
puppy by the neck honey.” Two weeks later Stella, Violet and
John came to visit. Now it was the grandchildren that needed
protection. Breeze saw little people and leaped on them, stole their
stuffed animals and raced around the yard. The grandchildren
July 2016 – Page 4
asked: “Granddad when are you going to put Breeze in her
kennel?”
She is growing – sapping our energy – deepening our love.
She has impacted and changed our lives. She comes like a rocket
to the whistle and is slowly learning what it means to be a dog.
Her kennel is now beside the other dog kennels in the garage at
night so she will not hear a floor board creek and decide to howl at
2 a.m. She sleeps till six a.m. now and is pretty much house
trained – every time I think we’re there, I learn we aren’t.
What is the breeze that stirs in your life? What is the
melting snow and fresh earth growing in you? The Season of
Pentecost is one of growth and just like having a new puppy,
growth is wonderful and work at the same time. Growth will be
the joy of petting a pup in your lap as she looks dreamily into your
eyes just before she falls asleep, and growth is also sharp claws
unintentionally making you say ouch with scratches on the legs.
One thing is for sure, just as the breeze stirs the leaves and brings
zest to stale air, so our puppy has spiced up our lives. What breeze
can we introduce to our faith life? What spirit wind can reshape
our lives and lead to a radical freshness that enhances our
relationship with God? Life is dynamic, it responds to wind/spirit
shifts. God is not done shaping us even as Yellowstone is
continually being shaped a new. Look not only to what God has
done in your life, but what God is doing now. How are you being
shaped? Venture out this summer, look to the mountain of faith,
and a freshening breeze will descend, lifting you to new heights
with God. Catch the mountain breeze.

MPLC SCRIP…make mission happen!
As Pastor Dave likes to say… “You’re going to spend the
money anyway: Make Mission Happen!
Did you know that there are other ways to buy scrip other than
stopping at the SCRIP table on Sunday mornings?
WHAT IS ScripNow?
It’s an eCard that you can print from home shortly after a purchase
using your PrestoPay account. You don’t have a PrestoPay account?
Please see the Scrip Team in the narthex for more information.
WHAT IS MyScripWallet?
It gives you access to any ScripNow eCard you have purchased, even
when you’re on the go. Different members of the same family can
link to the same MyScripWallet account. Questions? Stop by the
SCRIP table in the narthex to learn more.
Each Scrip purchase you make directly helps youth and adult
missions here at MPLC. It’s a win-win! Thank you for your support!
SCRIP hours are: Sundays; 9:30 – 11 a.m. AND each first
Saturday of the month.

Environmental Stewardship Articles: For many years, John Berge of MPLC’s Environmental Stewardship
Committee has written a monthly column focusing on issues relating
to caring for God’s earth, in terms of public policy options and
personal ways we can aid in keeping the gift of God’s creation
sustainable. The Committee meets with a consortium of other Racine
Churches quarterly to discuss ways to creatively leave a life filled
creation to our children. Pastor Dave
Environmental Stewardship by John Berge
On my walks through the neighborhood, I see that now must
be the time for applying fertilizer to lawns that are already bright
green. Some people do the job themselves, but many hire it to be done
by the same outfit that will come more frequently with their big gas-
powered mowers, blowers and other equipment. The advice has often
been given to have your soil tested to see whether or what elements
are needed. Have you done so? Out of curiosity, a few years ago I had
one of the big outfits come by and give me a quote; they “tested” the
soil by looking at the lawn! The commercial outfits generally use a
liquid application which is easier to control than the little pellets that
one buys at the garden store. If you use the latter, get out the broom
when you are done and sweep all the overflow back onto the lawn so
that less goes down the drain to over-fertilize our rivers and lakes.
If you do your own yard work, you can go after the invasive,
alien plant species at the same time. Last year, I noticed garlic
mustard growing in a number of yards in the neighborhood and, with
an excess of chutzpah, left notes about it in their doors. I feared I
July 2016 – Page 14
would lose some more friends, but I was surprised and pleased to get
calls from several of the recipients thanking me and asking for advice
on getting rid of the invasive plants. Some of the people can no longer
do the pulling and bagging of the plants, but were able to convince
their lawn people to do the chore. One such couple asked me back this
year to check how good a job was done and whether those white
flowers that just came out were more garlic mustard. No, these were
native raspberries which they may or may not want to keep. I also
discovered that their “beautiful lavender flowers under the trees” were
not woodland phlox as they supposed, but were Dame’s Rocket,
another invasive, alien plant of the mustard family. If the reader wants
to check the plants in their yard or native garden, Phlox has five
letters and five petals; Dame has four letters and four petals and is the
invasive, non-native plant which will soon be spreading hundreds of
seeds from the long, narrow seed pods that are so similar in both
garlic mustard and Dame’s Rocket.
Another lavender or purple flower that you may have seen
along streams and ponds is purple loosestrife, an invasive, alien
species that is squeezing out our native water and shoreline plants. If
you have any on your property, you may wish to contact the DNR.
They have researched a couple of small beetle species that keep this
plant under control in its native Europe and have determined that
bringing in these alien insect will not harm any of our native plants
and may keep the purple loosestrife under control. They need
volunteers to rear the beetles and loose them on the loosestrife. It
would be a good and educational project as well as good
environmental stewardship. Controlling invasive, alien plant species
is good environmental stewardship because these species often
squeeze out the native plants which our birds, other animals and
insects have evolved with and are dependent on — it is not just
getting rid of a weed.

Mission Highlights Pastor Krista is writing a monthly segment highlighting a mission
that MPLC participates in, and how you can be more involved!
ELCA World Hunger 40 Days of Giving During Lent this year, we participated in the ELCA's 40 Days of
Giving initiative. We at MPLC were able to raise $2,700 to be
donated to ELCA World Hunger! That's fantastic! Thank you! 449
congregations in the ELCA gave a total of $1,457,114! That will
feed and help a lot of people around the world! MPLC was
approached to participate in this initiative because we are already
among the most generous when it comes to giving to World
Hunger. That is something to be really proud of! Along with the
money given to World Hunger during our Lenten Midweek
Services, we also gave out a devotional by the same title. It had
daily devotions from people throughout the ELCA and the
international Lutheran community. These were all based around
hunger in the world and how it affects people physically and
spiritually. Through the giving of our gifts to World Hunger, we
were able to put feet on our prayers. We pray that the Lord will
help all people who are hungry or in want for basic human needs.
Then God uses us to make that happen. The road to zero hunger is
a long one, but we can be proud to be a part of a church and
denomination that truly lives by our tag line, "God's Work, Our
Hands". Thank you for your generosity in prayers and in giving.
Quilters News The quilters are on summer break but will resume again on
September 8 at 9 a.m. in fellowship hall. We sent five quilts to
Lutherdale for the Lutherdale Fest-Quilt Auction. This is a
fundraiser for the camp. The Auction is on Saturday, August 14
from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. You can preview the quilts on their website,
www.lutherdale.org. Also, you can see the results on the website
after the auction. This is a great fundraiser for the camp that so
many of our young confirmands attend each summer. Hope to see
some new faces to help us with quilting in the fall!!

Crafter’s Corner The crafters are taking months of July and August off
for a summer break. Please join us in September! Call
Donna Mullikin at 554-8872 if you have any questions.
Joseph’s Granary at MPLC Here’s how it works: Look for the Joseph’s Granary table in
the narthex. Leave any extra garden produce there. MPLC
members and guests are welcome to take produce in exchange
for a donation to the food bank. Any leftover produce after the
weekend will be donated to the food bank. It’s a win-win!
Campbell’s Labels/Box Tops for Education Please save Campbell labels and box tops to help West
Ridge Elementary School! For a complete list of eligible
items, visit www.labelsforeducation.com. Place labels
and/or box tops in the boxes at the welcome center in the

The High School Youth Want Your Aluminum Cans! You Can Help Our Youth and
The Environment at the Same Time!
Please remember to bring in your bagged empty aluminum
soda cans and put them by the soda machine in Fellowship Hall. It is
a simple way to raise lots of money for the high school summer trips,
and care for creation all at the same time.
BUT…..Please make sure there is NO GARBAGE in the
bags. Also…Please do NOT include any other type aluminum
(aluminum foil, aluminum pie tins, etc.) or other recycling (plastic
bottles, glass, paper, etc.) in the bags, as the recycling center will
not accept our recycling if those items are included. Thank you!
Project Night News Come to work on any project (scrapbooking, stamping,
painting, stitching, organizing) in Fellowship Hall on
Friday, July 22, from 6:30-11 p.m. There is plenty of
space and lots of tables to work on. Come join this
great group for fun and fellowship.

To the Congregation of MPLC: Thank you all so much for making Sunday, May 15 a very special day for me. Your kind words and best wishes made me feel much appreciated and loved. The
"Engraved Bell" will be such a great memorandum for the wonderful years spent directing the bells here at MPLC. These are fond memories that will never leave me. You've all been so kind over the years. I thank you all so very much!
