What does a Radiologic Technologist need to know? X-rays can be both diagnostic and therapeutic. The Registered Radiologic Technologist is trained to
obtain Diagnostic x-rays. In other words, the images are used to assist the physicians with diagnosis and overall disease management. Images also help to gauge the effectiveness of treatment.
Diagnostic images are obtained with the use of low levels of ionizing radiation. Because this radiation has the potential to cause harm to human tissues, the training requirements for the technologist are stringent.

Program Curriculum Physical principles of X-radiation: Students obtain a
detailed understanding about the physical interactions which create x-rays, the properties of x-ray energy as well as the ways in which x-rays affect human cells at the atomic level. In addition, a thorough understanding of the functioning of the Radiographic equipment is established.
Anatomy and Procedures: The detailed anatomy of each of the 206 human skeletal bones will be memorized. Proper positioning of every body part for optimal radiographic image production as well as appropriate technical factors needed in order to penetrate the part and provide a useful image.

Curriculum, Continued Pathology: Radiographers have a basic understanding of all various
anatomical systems and are familiar with common types of pathology ( diseases) and how they affect the final image.
Patient Care: Students learn sterile procedure, process of starting an IV, vital signs, CPR and basic understanding of the care and treatment of the ill.
Clinical Internship: In addition to classroom learning, for the first two semesters, Radiography students will spend a minimum of 16 hours weekly at an area hospital, performing radiographic procedures. The third semester involves 32 hours per week in clinicals, and the 4th and 5th semesters involve 24 clinical hours, weekly.

Program Admission
The Radiography Program at the Community College of Denver has had to reduce it’s student admissions based on a reduction in available clinical facilities at which to place students for their internships.
The program can currently accommodate a maximum of 30 incoming students annually at our Denver-area facilities.

Admission Criteria Revision Due to the high expectations of our clinical affiliates,
and numerous requests from them to assign the best possible internship candidates to their facilities, the CCD Radiography Program Director, in cooperation with the Dean of Health Sciences and the Vice President of Learning and Academic affairs, have revised the program admissions criteria.
Beginning with the incoming class of 2008, all further student admissions will be determined by a thorough and objective interview selection process.

Application Process After 2009
1. Complete all prerequisite coursework
2. Submit an application packet during the month of April. The application packet will only be accepted
from April 1-30 The packet must be complete, or it will not be
considered
3. Admission packets will be reviewed by a committee of Radiologic Professionals
4. Those candidates with complete packets will be invited to interview for a position in the next matriculating class

5. Interviews are conducted by a panel of 3 professional panel members.
6. Information from admission packets and interview will be scored and compiled by the admission panel.A minimum score of 70% is required for entry.
7. The top 30 candidates will be invited to enter the program in August of that year. Notification will occur in June.
8. Those candidates who were not selected may participate in future years, for a total of three attempts.If possible, the Radiography program staff will make
recommendations to help candidates improve their chances for success the next year.

Criminal Background CheckThis is a 10 year Federal Background Check
Disqualifying Offenses: Any conviction, plea of guilty or no contest, or
deferred adjudication of the following criminal offenses (felony or misdemeanor) appearing on a criminal background check will disqualify an applicant for admission to a CCCS Health Program.
There is no appealing this background check. It is mandatory.

I Crimes of violence (assault, sexual offenses, arson, kidnapping, murder, any crime against an at-risk adult or juvenile, etc.). as defined in section 18-1.3-406 C.R.S. in the 10 years immediately preceding the submittal of application.
II Any offense involving unlawful sexual behavior—same time limit as above.
III Any crime, the underlying basis of which has been found by the court on the record to include an act of domestic violence, as defined in section 18-6-800.3 C.R.S. in the 7 years immediately preceding the submittal of application.
IV Any crime of child abuse, as defined in section 18-6-401 C.R.S.—same time limit as above.
V Any crime related to the sale, possession, distribution or transfer of narcotics or controlled substances—same time limit as III.
VI Crimes of theft—Felony has a 7 year limit; Misdemeanor has a 5 year limit
