Friday 11th May 2018

Dear Children and Parents,

Please find below an important message from our Chairman, Mr Andrea Silvestroni

Dear Parents,

It has been a pleasure during my involvement as Chairman with Southlands English School in Rome

to see the school develop and offer an ever widening range of opportunities to our students. The

gaining of IB World School status in 2015 and the graduation of our first cohort with a 100% pass rate

in 2017 were particularly memorable moments.

In order that Southlands can continue to go from strength to strength, I have started an important

project that will open up further opportunities for our students.

I am delighted to inform you that Southlands, of which I will still be the Chairman and relevant

shareholder, has joined the NACE Schools Group, a worldwide leader in the international school

sector. This project, which sees NACE Group as the controlling shareholder, includes the acquisition

of Rome International School, of which I am also the Chairman and relevant shareholder. Rome

International School, previously owned by the prestigious LUISS University, is one of the main

international schools in Rome and is located in the northern part of the city.

This makes NACE the main provider of international education in Rome with approximately 850

students aged from 2 to 18 years and with a unique positioning (Southlands in southern Rome and

RIS in northern Rome) which will allow to offer its services citywide with important synergies and

cooperation between the two schools.

I will continue to be the Chairman of Southlands, a role that I have held for the last five years, and I

will also be the Chairman of Rome International School. Continuity at Southlands will be provided by

Mr. Wilson and Ms. Rosito leading the organisation.

Southlands will continue to be an IB school and, being part of the NACE Group, will benefit from an

enhanced relationship with the IB organisation. Educational excellence is always our purpose and we

are committed to maintain the highest level of academic quality. In addition, Southlands will benefit

from the collaboration of NACE’s Educational Director, an experienced international professional, and

his team.

The NACE Group (www.naceschools.com), is one of the top four private school groups in the world

with international presence and the largest of its type in the European continent. With more than 33

schools in Spain, France, UK, Italy, Andorra and India, the NACE Group has more than 14,000

students from 60 countries.

NACE’s mission is to prepare each student to live successfully in a globalised world, which is well-

aligned to Southlands’ student-centered approach that is based on the ethos of the International

Baccalaureate.

I strongly believe that in becoming a member of the NACE family, Southlands will accomplish new

ambitious goals and development plans, and will provide its students with new opportunities that will

further enhance the academic path of the school.

I would like to point out some of these opportunities:

Students may take part in exchange programmes within the NACE network, both for short

term (1 or 2 weeks) and for longer periods (1 term, 2 terms or even a full year) at the prestigious

“Stonar” boarding school in England;

Students will have the opportunity to attend NACE Summer schools;

Students will have the possibility to be involved in annual multicultural events with the

participation of other schools of the Network such as: International Music Week, NACE Model

United Nations, Academic Olympics, NACE Sports Olympics and the Virtual Arts Competition.

Furthermore, both Southlands and Rome International School will benefit from a partnership with

LUISS. This now becomes the most important educational hub in Rome, offering excellent

programmes from nursery to University courses at LUISS.

Immediate benefits of this partnership will be that:

Students who will achieve a minimum of 30 in the IB final exam will be allowed to gain

direct access to LUISS courses both in Italian and in English, without an entry test.

Students who will achieve a minimum of 36 in the IB final exam will be able to apply

for a LUISS scholarship;

Students will receive a 50% discount to attend LUISS Summer School;

LUISS Professors and students will carry out orientation activities for the students

attending high school/academy starting from Y11 who are looking to enrol at LUISS;

Starting next academic year (2018/19) LUISS Professors may teach in English to our

academy students some subjects such as Global Politics, Macro e Micro Economics,

International law and, if possible, Anthropology;

Up to 5 annual seminars run by LUISS Professors will be offered to the students on

specific topics.

If you wish to learn more about NACE Schools’ shared vision, values and commitment to a quality

educational experience, you are warmly invited to a presentation meeting in the presence of Mr.

Sergio González-Andión, CEO of NACE Group on Thursday 17th May at the following times:

Teaching Staff: 08.00 – 08.45 in the Dining Hall

Non-Teaching Staff: 09.30 – 10.15 in the Dining Hall

Parents: 14.30 – 15.30 on the Wembley Football Pitch

We look forward to welcoming you.

Andrea Silvestroni

Chairman of the Board of Directors

Cari Genitori,

IB in Italia.

principi dell’International Baccalaureate.

in Inghilterra;

- I nostri studenti potranno usufruire della Summer School presso scuole del Gruppo NACE;

NACE Model United Nations, Academic Olympics, NACE Sports Olympics e Virtual Arts

Competition.

dalla LUISS, con esonero dal sostenimento del test di ammissione;

concorrere alla borsa di studio messa a diposizione dalla LUISS;

LUISS Summer School;

attraverso la testimonianza di docenti e studenti dell’Università;

nostri studenti alcune materie in lingua inglese come Global Politics, Macro e Micro

Economics, International law e, se possibile, Anthropology;

Dance Assembly On Friday 4th May, 17 girls from the Primary School came together to put on a spectacular dance show for their parents. With students from Reception, all the way through to Year 6, it really was a fantastic opportunity to see how dance can bring people of all ages together. Not only have the girls made fantastic dance progress throughout this year, they have developed friendships, teamwork and determination along with many other life skills.

With continuous effort, enthusiasm, and passion, they have been a pleasure to teach and work with this year. I am very proud of their achievements and I hope to see the girls continue dancing in the future and following their dreams in the dancing world! Well done girls! Miss Polito Dance Teacher

I liked doing the assembly because when I dance with Miss Polito and for Southlands, I feel very happy - Maria Sophia

I liked dancing because I was able to do lifts with the older girls - Miriam I was astonished to see so many Mummies and Daddies but it was so good to be able to dance for them - Lara It was so exciting to be able to dance with Miss Polito and do a show. Ludovica Dancing with Miss Polito was the best experience of my life because of learning

new technical movements with my feet that I never thought I would be able to do - Sophie Dancing with Miss Polito is the best thing because we do nice lifts and get stronger and stronger - McKenzie Dancing with Miss Polito was an amazing experience because we got to learn new things and got to perform shows for our parents - Letizia

My thanks go to Miss Polito for producing such an inspiring show.

Year 5 Flowers In Year Five this week, we applied our Science knowledge to the

great outdoors! We closely observed flowers and the activity of

insects and their role in pollination. We then took our photographs

back to class where we observed, discussed and labelled the plants'

features. Flower power!

4L Reading Cave! Ready for the Summer, 4L have created their

very own indoor garden inside their classroom.

Here they can relax and chill out, whilst reading their

favourite books.

Many Thanks to Parents for supporting your children from home with this

Project.

RISA League Fixtures Under 11 What a season this has been! So many highs and so much of which to be proud. All of those who

participated have represented the school so well this year and should be very pleased with their

efforts.

Seven teams joined the league at the beginning of the school year

and, after 15 games, Southlands managed to finish third in a

closely fought contest.

From September, many of the students now begin their journey

into secondary school and are already looking forward to

representing the school at under 14 level.

Today, however, the teams played two games and a friendly

fixture and we had a first start for Emiliano M, from Year 6, who

deputised in goal and put in a sensational performance:

Southlands 3-4 St George’s

After taking the lead early on in the game, Southlands

managed to go 2-0 up after only ten minutes. A few costly

errors though saw St. George’s pull level and then take the

game to the lads, scoring twice more taking the score to 2-4.

However, all of the Southlands players dug in and began to

attack; narrowly missing on a few occasions and then some

exceptional play from Alessandro saw him grab a well-

deserved goal just before the whistle.

Southlands 4-1 New School

A rejuvenated team took on our main rivals, and eventual cup winners, New School, who have only

lost twice all season. Today, Southlands made that three losses for the New School Team with an

inspirational performance and all praise must go to Emiliano and Alessandro, with the former scoring

twice and setting up a goal for a teammate.

Defending was on cue and well structured and, when needed,

Emiliano made sure that nobody was getting a shot past him.

A great win and, after a few handshakes, even the New School

Team had nothing but praise for the Southlands Team.

I would like to thank all players and parents for a great year all

round and hope to see everyone back in September to continue

this wonderful experience, which I always love to do, and is

always highly entertaining.

My thanks go to Mr Hough for all of his wonderful coaching throughout the year. Readathon is back! This year, Readathon will be celebrated in the Primary School during the week commencing the 21st May. Readathon is a programme organised by the charity Read for Good, which provides brand new books for children in hospital. Each class will choose a day during the week to celebrate reading and take part in a ‘Reading Party’ with their Book Buddy class. On the day of the party, you are invited to dress up in

your pyjamas, bring in a teddy or wear your slippers to school, along with donating 1 euro towards the charity (optional). We are looking forward to celebrating reading together and helping a wonderful charity in the process. Miss Vaughan and Miss Polito

School Uniform/Dress Code Please find below a reminder of the summer uniform dress code. Mr Johnson has asked me to say that if there is a problem regarding summer uniform (something is in the wash!) kindly send him a note. The weather is probably getting a little warm for the “Southlands Hoodie” but should students wish to wear it, that is perfectly acceptable. Mr Johnson and I appreciate your support regarding school uniform.

Nurses’ Corner Daily tips for good oral hygiene

It is important to take care of your mouth and teeth

starting in childhood. If you do not, you could have

problems with your teeth and gums - like cavities or

even tooth loss.

Bacteria can live in your mouth in the form of plaque, causing cavities and gingivitis, which can lead

to periodontal (gum) disease. In order to keep your mouth clean, you must practice good oral hygiene

every day.

Here is how to keep your mouth and teeth healthy:

Brush your teeth every day with a fluoride toothpaste

Clean between your teeth every day with floss or another type of between-the-teeth cleaner

Snack smart - limit sugary snacks

Don't smoke

See your dentist or oral health professional regularly
