FROM PASTOR DIXIE’S DESK (Chaplain of Spiritual Life)

“I can do all things through HIM who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13)

I am forever reminded of the challenges, unexpected occurrences, and changes that are present in

our earthly journey. When we least expect it life can present us with moments when we ask

ourselves “how will I make it through this time”? It is in those times we wonder if we are strong

enough, wise enough, knowledgeable enough, compassionate enough, strong enough and faithful

enough for the task.

I am reminded by the words of the Apostle Paul when he wrote in his letter to the Philippians, “I can

do all things through Him who strengthens me.” The scholars translate these words by saying

… “the apostle was not omnipotent, either in himself, or by the power of Christ; nor could he do all

things that Christ could do; but he could be content in every state, and could know how to behave

himself in adversity and prosperity, amidst both poverty and plenty; as a Christian and as an apostle,

as to exercise a conscience void of offence towards God and men; to take the care of all the

churches; to labor more abundantly than others in preaching the Gospel; and to bear all afflictions,

reproaches, and persecutions for the sake of it. He could willingly and cheerfully endure the most

cruel and torturing death for the sake of Christ. All these things Paul could do, not in his own

strength, for no man was more conscious of his own weakness than Paul, or knew more of the impo-

tency of human nature; and therefore always directed others to be strong in the Lord, and in the

power of his might, and in the grace that is in Christ, on which he himself always depended, and by

which he did what he did; as he added ‘through Christ which strengthens me’.”

As I read those words of the scriptures and the interpretation of those words I am reminded

and encouraged that in the moments of life when we are the weakest ---we are made strong through

Christ. In the times when we are without wisdom--- we find knowledge and direction through Christ.

In the events of life that can crush us and weigh us down with worry, heartache and grief ---we are

made strong and lifted up through Him. In and of ourselves we can never be enough but through

HIM who strengthens us we can be all that Christ needs for us to be. It is this truth that strengthens

our faith, focuses as sight, and directs our pathway as Christ’s disciple servants. In the midst of our

admitted inadequacies and through our faith we can claim the strength of Christ within each and

every one of us. Through HIM all things are possible according to his will.
