The Church had been fonnally organi7.ed in New YorK Slate in 1830, but the saints had encountered per!iCCutions that made their tcnure in that state difficult. That year, a revelation had led to the cal ling of miuionaries to preach to the lamanites. as the Book of Mormon called the Native Americans, The same revelation declared that the city of Zion, the gathering place of the saints. would be built "on the borders by the l.amanites.") The missionaries traveled to Missouri . which by revelation in 1831 , was designaled 11$ "tiK: land ... appointed and consecrated fOt Ihe gathering of the saints .. , the land of promise. and the place fOt the city of Zion."'

En route to Missouri, the missionaries to the Lamanites had stopped in l'arley P. Prall's former ncighbortlOod in Ohio, when: !;()()II hundreds received the joyous message alld joined the Church.! The Thrley Coat Of Anns

WHAT OF O UR TURLEY NAME?

The I'IOdem hereditary use of surnames is a pr<Ictice that originated iIIIDrlg' the venetian aristocracy in Italy about the 10th or 11th centuries . crusaders returning fran the ~ly Land took note of this eusta.! and soon Spre&:'I it!:! use t:h.rcJJghout: <:uropa. !"rance, the British Isles, and then Gemany and Spain began applying the practice as the ~ to dlstinguJ.sh 1n:llviduals became rmro ~t. By the 1370's the '-'Oro " SlIrnar.'la" """ found in clocIr.ents , and had oc:Jne to acquire scm:! Brl'ltive and dynastic significanc:c. Men scmetJ.mes sought to keep their surname alive by encouraging a collateral to adopt it when they had no direct descendant!:! of their own in the male line . Alth:JlJgh we can see that the harrling on of a surT\aI!e has beca:la a matter of pride, we can only 9IJeSs as to the reasa'lS for adopting' hereditary surnar.es in the first place.

In nearly every case, SIlrnilIle> were first used by the nobility and ""OOlthy l~, and the practice then tricl:led ao.m to the man:hanls and UlLiLOiIeCS.

Tt>t::. first permanent I\aIfCS were those of barcns and lamo.mers who derived their names fran their tnaT.OrS and fiefs . 1'hese names became fixed through the hereditary

v nature of their lanis. For the ll'OI'I:ers of the """rking and middle classes seeking status , the practices of the mbUity were 1rnJ.tated, leading to the widespread use of SIIt'llat'll::!S.

It would be a difficul t task to work out a sirrtlle classification of family names due to spelling and pronunciation changes over the years. I1any ol d """rds had different r:ean1ngs , or are TOol" oboolete. rlany f amily T\IIIl"eS were delX'ldeht on the cxnp!1:ency and discretion of the writer. 'the sarti'! name can sanetJ.mes I:e st:elled in different ways even in the same doc\soont .

Family nancs have <Xm3 da.>n to us in varioos ways. 'IN!y may have grown oot of a person's sucrt:ll.ll1dings or job or the name of an ancestor. 'r'he surnar.c 'l'Urley appears to I:e loc:atic:nal in origin. OUr research-in:Ucates t.'lat it can !:c asscciatcd with the Irish, .-.o.:sninq "dIoeller at or near a rcund or circular clearing; one who cama fran TUrleigh , a place in wiltshire, and one who 11V(ld at or ncar a deep curving valley that lay between n.:. praninent places. " Although this interpretation is the result of oncr:wItic nse-rch, you may f1.rJj other noeanJ.ngs for the Turley ~.

Knowing that different spellings of the !IaI!I'! ori ginal SUJ:na1!8 are a COl"Oi. oec:u=ence, it is not Sl.lrpr1sing that dictionaries of Surna/l'eS indicate p:rcbahlc spelling variaUCI1S of the Turley SUIT1aIOO to be Trunleah, Turleigh, ntyre!<mg, TUrlie , TUrly, 'I\Jrlay Turleys. Although bearers of the old and distinguished Turley name o::ztt:¢ise a small percentage of individuals living in the world today, there may be a large rurber of your direct relatives who are usin9 one of the Turley I"IiIII'IC variatials.
