There are no boundaries with blogging.

Blogs are different from other web sites:

1. they update constantly2. they’re interactive3. they’re often personal (but sometimes may be used by organisations eg Family History Societies)

MY ONE PLACE STUDIES or INTERESTS

1.Emigrants from East County Clare, Ireland to Australia (mainly)

2.Emigrants from Dorfprozelten, Bavaria to Australia (mainly)

3.Murphy’s Creek, Queensland

WHY BLOG? 1.To find current relatives of the emigrants and

residents of “your” place - a variation on “cousin bait”.

2.To share the micro-scale stories of the places you research.

3.To disassemble the statistical data that hides the “ordinary” lives and “ordinary” stories.

4.To time travel backward and find what links exist between emigrants and where they lived.

BUT…While Time Travelling to past generations is something we hanker for….

We might find a little cloning necessary to keep across all our interests.

Page 14: Please note these slides from my Congress 2015 ... · Please note these slides from my Congress 2015 presentation are copyrighted to me. They are not for general use and should not

STEP 2:

Lots of responses and family connections among the comments….especially for Dorfprozelten.

I’ve just discovered your web site when I looked up Dorfprozelten to get a map. My ancestors (HENNIG) but name changed to Henny arrived on the “Peru” in 1855. They settled in Dungog, N.S.W.

Hi. I just notice in the first part of this blog that a relative married a Caroline UMSCHEID.My great grandfather came from Dorfprozelten in the 1880s.His name was Johannes Ludwig Umscheid, born in Dorfprozelten in 1822. …. I also was fortunate enough to visit this little village last March. I found this little town truly a gem…

I just saw your great article on Dorfprozelten immigrant descendants in WW1. John ZELLER (ZÖLLER) was my great grandfather…Your article nicely puts together various family anecdotes I had heard previously.

Hi Denise, I too am a decendant of George GÜNZER and Hildergardis HOCK my grandfather was Christopher Ganzer….get in touch.

Thank you for all the research you’ve done on the Dorfprozeltenmigrants, its been marvellous to get so much information and so many leads…. ..Our great-great grandparents were not siblings, but they were cousins. Joseph and Caroline ZOLLER were raised by their Aunt and Uncle, Franz and Catharine Zoller. Their parents had died ,but it seems that their relations on their mother’s side (the GUNZERS) also came to Australia at a later date and they bought a 3rd sibling with them. I wonder if you could give my email address to Denice Nicholls and Kevin Ganzer…

I am a descendant of Joseph NEBAU(E)R, the father of Eugene Nebau(e)r. I am related to Eugene’s sister Anna Rosina who travelled to Australia sometime after Eugene along with their mother Elizabeth (nee PLATZ). Their father, Joseph, had already died at the time of Eugene’s migration. The family went initially to Lochinvar (near Maitland) and then on to Jerry’s Plains… You have inspired me to visit Dorfprozelten next year.

VALUE-ADD:

• Offer a Translate page for non-English research.

• Offer the option of having other descendants write about their ancestors in a post.

• Be willing to help those who comment…and be a “match maker”.

CONSIDER:

• Consider your commitments – this will take time.

• Will you start a new blog or use a current one?

• Are you interested in emigrants anywhere/only in Australia?

• Would a facebook group be helpful?

PART 2: THE EAST CLARE IRISH

WHERE?

WHAT I HAD:

• Lots of data extracted from Immigration Deposit Journals, immigration records etc.

• Parish data transcriptions.

WHAT I WANTED:

• To trace these immigrants’ lives.

• To trace their location and migration within Australia.

• To learn of their life experiences and compare similarities and differences between the families.

MY STARTING POINT

Page 23: Please note these slides from my Congress 2015 ... · Please note these slides from my Congress 2015 presentation are copyrighted to me. They are not for general use and should not

THE PROBLEM:

• How do I find out where these immigrants dispersed to among the myriad Murphys, McNamaras and Moloneys?

THE SOLUTION:

• Trove Newspapers for obituaries, stories, death notices etc.

• Blogging to draw in descendants and relatives.

UNEXPECTED BONUS:

• Finding references to relatives overseas.

ANOTHER BLOG IS BORN

Page 25: Please note these slides from my Congress 2015 ... · Please note these slides from my Congress 2015 presentation are copyrighted to me. They are not for general use and should not

INITIAL BLOG PLAN

• Search Trove by place names + County Clare.

• Identify whether the person met the criteria.

• Post only the news article – my initial plan.

• Check if I have any photos of gravestones.

• Hope for connections with relatives.

Page 26: Please note these slides from my Congress 2015 ... · Please note these slides from my Congress 2015 presentation are copyrighted to me. They are not for general use and should not

DID THE PLAN WORK?

• AMENDED PLAN: to track the person in immigration, BDM notices and other relevant sources.

• Fewer responses than I’d hoped – so far.

• A goldmine of references from Trove.

• So yes, it’s working – bearing in mind that cloning issue.
