Dear St Paul of the Cross Parishioners,

What is the one religious article that immediately conveys that the user is a Catholic? I would say, “The holy rosary.” Growing up as a child before the Vatican Council, I viewed the recital of the rosary as a typically Catholic practice. All through my youth we said the rosary everyday. I will never forget my dad calling us for family prayer which always included five decades of the rosary. For two of those decades we had to be on our knees. My brothers would try to find an excuse to avoid family prayer but my dad would always make them kneel down. The month of October is the month of the holy rosary. We celebrate the feast on October 7 in commemoration of the victory of the Christian armies of Europe in the Battle of Lepanto when they engaged the Turks in 1571. The practice of the rosary itself goes back a long time. It is generally believed that St Dominic gave the Church the devotion of the rosary as we know it. He was having a difficult time converting the Albigensians (who were heretics) and at one point prayed for three days and three nights asking for the Blessed Mother’s help. She appeared to him and asked him to pray “her Psalter.” As we all know, the Psalter contains 150 Psalms which are the biblical prayers. Even before St Dominic’s day it was customary for people, especially the uneducated, to say 150 Hail Mary’s. Some people object that the rosary is repetitive. What they do not understand is that most of life is repetitive. The sun rises and sets the same way. The seasons follow one another in unfaltering rhythm. It is the possibility of repetition that makes life easier and manageable. Thank God we do not have to learn certain skills fresh every day. We walk the same way, we talk the same way and we even love the same way. Moreover, love calls for repetition. Ask a married couple in love how often they say “I love you” to each other on any given day. Probably several times. Even though they repeat the same phrase many times, each time it is unique. Repetition is part and parcel of life and love. Many monks – including non-Christians – have used repetition for centuries to lose themselves in prayer. The rosary is a Christo-centric prayer because we are asked to meditate on the great mysteries of our Savior’s life and ministry as we say the Our Father’s and the Hail Mary’s. It is also a Marian prayer because it enables us to join the Archangel Gabriel in praising Mary and praying for her intercession. The rosary is a simple form of prayer. It does not take much effort. You can pray it anywhere, any time. You can pray it in your car, in your home or in church. It is a great family prayer that will encourage even the little ones to join in. When you are stuck in traffic, it is better to pray the rosary than to get upset with someone who gave you the “classic American greeting.” I find it particularly helpful to say the rosary when I am in bed. It always helps me fall asleep. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of this great Catholic devotion. If you are not in the habit of saying the rosary, please start. Do teach your children to pray it. I encourage all families to recite the rosary as often as possible, especially during the month of October. When you are on a long road trip, it is a good practice to pray the rosary in the car. I wish the family rosary will become a cherished habit in all our parish families. I would like to conclude with the words of Pope Paul VI who wrote a beautiful letter, Marialis Cultus, on devotion to Mary. In it he recommended the rosary as a worthy practice in these words: “Do not fail to put repeated emphasis on the recitation of the rosary. It is a prayer so pleasing to Our Lady and so often recommended… Your Rosary is like a ladder that you climb step by step, drawing you close to our Lady, which means finding Christ. It is a devotion which leads us to Christ through Mary.” When we pray the rosary, we not only pray to Mary; we pray with her. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church says:

Mary is the perfect Orans (pray-er), a figure of the Church. When we pray to her, we are adhering with her to the plan of the Father, who sends his Son to save all men. Like the beloved disciple we welcome Jesus’ mother into our homes, for she has become the mother of all the living. We can pray with and to her. The prayer of the Church is sustained by the prayer of Mary and united with it in hope. (#2679)

Please pray the rosary for the parish, for your families and for yourselves. May our Blessed Mother watch over each and every member of our parish! Yours warmly,

Last Spring, a new organization was started for 6th, 7th and 8th graders at our school. Led by parents

Wendy Diez and Karen Maloney, the SPC Life Team was established to help students live out the Gospel of Life through service to the most vulnerable ~ the unborn, those with special needs, the poor and the

elderly. The goal of the SPC Life Team is to encourage students to respect the inherent dignity of every human life from conception until its natural end.

In addition to making Easter baskets for the mothers and children at Aid for Women’s Heather’s House, students also volunteered at Feed my Starving Children and had a prayer service/activity with Fr. Peter. Last week, the SPC Life Team had its first meeting of the year with 24 students in attendance. Their first project will be distributing bottles for The Women’s Center Baby Bottle Project this weekend (September 28-29). Student members will be speaking at all the Masses about this project and about the SPC Life Team’s mission.

Our parish is proud of these young people who are living out their

commitment to life!

Fr. Peter and members of the SPC Life Team volunteered at Feed My Starving Children in Schaumburg.

Last spring, students decorated rocks with respect life messages and placed them by the Mary statue near the safe zone. Fr. Pe-ter blessed the area and had a prayer ser-vice for the students.

NURSE’S NOTES……… Hi everyone! Here are some snippets of info from a seminar, (and other sources), which I attended recently. We know that trans fats are not good for us

and here’s why. Tran fats can raise our level of LDL’s, low density lipoproteins (the “bad” cholesterol), while lowering the level of our HDL’s, the high density lipoproteins, (the “good” cholesterol). Trans fats are found in margarines, baked goods and processed foods, especially those with a long shelf life. Of these three simple sugars, glucose, fructose and galactose, glucose is the least sweet tasting, while galactose has a sweeter in mouth taste, but fructose has the sweetest in mouth taste. High fructose corn syrup, which is contained in some foods, is controversial due to what it does in the body. In the liver, fructose is converted to saturated fat, triglycerides, (another form of fat in the bloodstream), and to glucose. So for that reason, among others, it’s best to avoid HFCS. Did you know that “fat cell” membranes can convert cortisone, (inactive) to cortisol, (a stress hormone) associated with increased cravings for sweets and carbohydrates, fostering chronic inflammation and possible shrinkage of our “hippocampus” in our brain concerned with memory. Speaking of the hippocampus: trans fats are also reputed to negatively affect that part of our brain. Happily, many trans fats have been removed, or not added to our food now. Remember the glycemic index, the assigned number for the effect a specific food, has on the ability to raise our blood sugar a G.I. number of 100 is pure glucose or sugar. Foods that are high in the G.I. index are: high fructose corn syrup, white rice, white bread, corn flakes, white potatoes. Foods that are low G.I. foods: beans, seeds, most veggies and whole (intact) grains. Many studies link excess added sugars to these problems: obesity, heart disease, stroke, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and fatty liver. The number of people experiencing fatty liver problems has increased recently. Streptococcus mutans is known as a “factor in tooth decay” and “actinomyces” has been described as a “film-forming tartor” in the mouth. So, brushing and flossing are a necessity for a healthy mouth. The Mediterranean diet, one of the best ways to eat for good health, does not cause weight gain in the elderly. Teen aged girls who regularly consume apples, bananas and grapes appear to be 25% less likely to develop breast cancer in middle age. If you want to limit your intake of food, we are advised to use “grandma’s dishes” because vintage dishes are smaller than those sold and used today. Therefore, the portions only appear to be larger, but are usually smaller. A lovely and more healthy dessert: melt dark chocolate and dip dried apricots, figs, etc., covering one quarter, to one half of each piece of fruit and put on wax paper to cool. The antioxidants in nuts can strengthen brain wave frequencies associated with learning, memory, cognition and other functions. So, go nuts!

Till next week, let’s remember that “in our daily lives we must see that it is not happiness that makes us grateful, but the gratefulness that makes us happy”.

Fondly, Linda Burk,

Maria Council #4836 of the Knights of Columbus will be hosting its

12th ANNUAL ROSARY IN THE PARK TO COMMEMORATE THE 102nd ANNIVERSARY

OF THE FINAL APPARITION BY OUR LADY OF FATIMA ON OCTOBER 13, 1917

October 12, 2019 – 10AM Hodges Park, Park Ridge

(Courtland Avenue & Vine Avenue)

In 1917, the Blessed Mother appeared to three peasant children in Fatima, Portugal with a plea for

the world to stop offending God and to pray for peace. Her message was simple---- Pray the Rosary for Peace; Turn our lives back to God; Offer penance and repara on for our sins and to prevent the loss of souls.

For our own country, we pray for Our Lady’s help to heal our nation, stop our moral breakdown, defend our core

rights, recognize the sanctity of life and protect our freedom of religious beliefs. We ask her to guide us to

bring back into our lives, Almighty God, Whose law is the foundation on which this nation was founded and Who is the True Source of our rights to life, liberty and the pur-

suit of happiness. All are welcome to this deeply spiritual event.

For your comfort, please plan to bring a lawn chair or blanket.

Guardians of the Hour, Take Courage, Invite Another to Become a Guardian of the Hour

ONE COMMITTED ADORER HOURS

JESUS IS THE HOLY EUCHARIST

In a Pew Research Study, only 31% of Catholics surveyed, reported their belief that the bread and wine used during the Mass, through a process called

Transubstantiation, become the Body and Blood of Chr ist. Some 69% believe that the bread and wine are only “symbols of the Body and Blood of Christ.”

Bishops across the country are writing to the faithful about this. Bishop Daniel Jenky of Peoria has released his 2020 annual teaching document, “The Real Presence” a year early in hopes of a renewed witness to the Real Presence. He wrote that:

“Transubstantiation is a fundamental teaching of the Catholic Church. It is a defined dogma of the Catholic Church, revealed by the Holy Spirit and preserved from any possible error, that the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ are truly and substantially PRESENT IN THE MOST HOLY EUCHARIST. This is not an opinion measured against any opinion poll but rather Divine Revelation as expressed by the absolute authority of Scripture and Tradition.”

In Chapter 6 of John’s Gospel, Jesus was adamant, repeating “anyone who does eat my flesh and drink my blood has eternal life.” At the Last Supper, He instituted the Holy Eucharist, took the bread and wine and said “This is My Body---This is My Blood. Do this in memory of Me.” This was a serious command to the Apostles to repeat what He had just done. Those who spend time in our Adoration Chapel, recognize the Sacred White Host in the Monstrance as the Real Presence, the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus. Visits to the Chapel provide a constant stream of spiritual assistance to all. It strengthens one’s belief in the dogmas of Christ’s religion. It protects one from the secular onslaught of disbelief.
