Florida Gateway College has established a strong tradition of providing high qual-ity, postsecondary educational opportunities to the citizens of North Central Florida. What began as a school of Forestry in 1947, has now grown to become a compre-hensive, public college serving more than 5,000 students annually. The College traces its growth from the Forest Ranger School, which utilized structures that remained from a World War II era naval air station. In 1961, when the state of Florida created Lake City Junior College on the campus of the old forestry school, the College became one of 28 two-year institutions envisioned in the state’s master plan. In those early days, Lake City Junior College had fewer than 400 students. The inclusion in 1970 of “community” in the College’s title emphasizes the broad spectrum of transfer and occupational programs offered in addition to continuing education and community service courses. Lake City Community College officially became Florida Gateway College on July 1, 2010. Today the campus of FGC is an attractive site, nestled in what was originally 100 acres of pines, the College, with the assistance of The Foundation for Florida Gateway College, now has over 190 acres including the main campus consisting of more than 140 acres and the public safety campus consisting of 50 acres. Florida Gateway College offers outstanding programs in the liberal arts and sciences. A significant number of students who begin their college career in these programs earn associate degrees and then successfully transfer to senior institutions where they maintain superior records when compared to their university counterparts. Florida Gateway College also offers outstanding opportunities in diverse occupational programs such as business administration, computer programming, water/wastewater, welding, and cosmetology. The College provides comprehensive training in Nursing & Health Science fields such as registered nursing, practical nursing, emergency medical services, physical therapist assistant, patient care technician, and others. Each year the College maintains the search for excellence by offering new programs which meet the needs of its district.

In 2012, Florida Gateway College launched its inaugural four-year program, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Two additional four-year degrees - a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education and a Bachelor of Applied Science in Water Resources Management - have since launched.

HISTORY OF FLORIDA GATEWAY COLLEGE

Florida Gateway College’s district encompasses five North Central Florida counties: Baker, Columbia, Dixie, Gilchrist, and Union. This 2,683 square mile district is an area twice the size of Rhode Island.

The region around the college is commonly referred to as Florida’s Crown and the Gateway to Florida. The college district is situated midway between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. The geographic area around Florida Gateway College would generally be considered rural. The moderate climate, hospitality of the community, and beauty of the adjacent recreational areas draw visitors and newcomers from around the world.

Florida Gateway College’s main campus is located approximately six miles east on Highway 90 from downtown Lake City, Florida, with sites in Baker (Olustee), Dixie and Gilchrist counties. Florida Gateway College is committed to providing the highest quality education and training to the citizens of its unique, rural service area. The College believes that each group, every community, and every nation derives all of its value and all of its power directly from the individuals who constitute those bodies. In a democratic society, individuals, each and every one, need to be appreciated for their unique, irreplaceable, and intrinsic value. Further, this value needs to be enhanced and amplified with fitting educational experience to fully consummate societal potential. The Florida Gateway College district continues to experience growth. The col-lege is committed to providing excellent postsecondary educational opportuni-ties to the citizens of North Central Florida while maintaining an “open-door” admission policy. The District Board of Trustees, faculty, and staff of Florida Gateway College are dedicated to helping FGC students reach their personal and career goals.

In the medieval universities, students and teachers wore gowns indicating their status and scholastic achievements. European institutions still show great diversity in the specifications of academic dress, but American colleges and universities adopted a system which all could follow.

Accordingly, in 1865 at Columbia University, an intercollegiate commission drafted a uniform code for the use of caps, gowns, and hoods. These standards, with few revisions, are still in effect. Florida Gateway College follows this Academic Costume Code.

Four academic degrees are generally recognized: the associate, the bachelor, the master, and the doctorate. The associate degrees (associate in arts and associate in science) are offered by the standard two-year community or junior colleges. The other three are conferred by universities and colleges. The bachelor’s or baccalaureate degree takes its name directly from the medieval practice of “bachelors” wearing a garland of bayberries. The master’s degree was equivalent to a license to teach and sometimes was followed by the express words “Licentia Docendi.” The doctorate degree, when earned by study such as the Doctor of Philosophy degree, indicates advanced study and independent research in a specialized field of learning. Honorary degrees are granted for meritorious service and for distinction in public or private endeavors.

Those holding a bachelor’s degree wear a black gown fastened at the top and distinguished by long, pointed sleeves hanging nearly to the knees. The master’s gown, worn open, has long, closed sleeves with an arc of a circle appearing near the bottom and a slit for the arm near the middle of the sleeves. The doctoral gown has a full bell sleeve with velvet front facings and sleeve chevrons. The hood for those holding a bachelor’s degree is three feet long with a two-inch strip of velvet; the master’s hood is three and one-half feet long faced with a three-inch strip of velvet; and the doctor’s hood is four-feet long faced with a five-inch strip of velvet.

The color of the tassel or the velvet strip on the hood indicates the field of study in which the degree was earned or granted, for example: agriculture and forestry, maize; arts, white; business, drab; education, light blue; engineering, orange; law, purple; library science, lemon yellow; music, pink; philosophy, royal blue; science, golden yellow. Each hood is also lined in silk with the color of the institution which granted the degree, for example: orange and blue for the University of Florida; garnet and gold for Florida State University.

The appropriate cap for all degrees is the familiar black “mortar board.” A tassel, of either black or a color signifying the field of specialization, is worn hanging to the left of the face. Those holding a doctorate degree may wear a soft velvet cap of black or the color indicating their field of study or, with the mortar board, may wear a tassel in whole or in part of gold thread.

College degrees are awarded with honors as follows:

Summa Cum Laude are students who are associate in arts or associate in science degree graduates. Degrees are awarded with highest praise, and a recipient must graduate with a grade point average (GPA) of 3.75 – 4.0.

Magna Cum Laude are students who are associate in arts or associate in science degree graduates. Degrees are awarded with great praise, and a recipient must graduate with a GPA of 3.50 – 3.74.

Cum Laude are students who are associate in arts or associate in science degree graduates. Degrees are awarded with praise, and a recipient must graduate with a GPA of 3.33 – 3.49.

Phi Theta Kappa honors scholastic graduates and they are recognized by the gold stoles or sashes worn with their gowns and the gold tassels hung from their caps. The society president also wears a gold medallion hung from a gold ribbon, with officers wearing gold medallions hung from blue and gold ribbons.

Phi Theta Kappa is the international honor society for two-year colleges. To be inducted into the society, a candidate must have a GPA of 3.5 or higher and main-tain a 3.0.
