Québec Trip On April 17, twenty-nine Hopewell High School stu-dents, accompanied by teachers Mrs. Sue Masley, Mrs. Jane Shadle, and retired teacher Mrs. Linda Schuller, boarded a bus and drove north to the prov-ince of Québec, Canada. Destinations for the six-day trip included Montreal and Québec City.
The students experienced such attractions as a unique copper museum, the breathtaking waterfalls of Montmorency, and the beautiful basilica of Sainte Anne- de Beaupré. They tried their hand at perform-ing circus tricks at a circus school and learning about 19th century etiquette at a tea ceremony. Students tasted Canadian maple syrup and played wooden spoons at a traditional Sugar Shack and strolled
around the charming streets of Vieux Montreal and Québec, enjoying such attractions as artists selling their paintings along the narrow, steep streets. A surprise snowstorm on April 20 made that day memorable for the group as they waded through six inches of snow! All members of the group had their horizons widened by experiencing life in a French-speaking region of North America. The group’s tour guide listed the Hopewell group as “among the top five” stu-dent groups he had ever had. Merci à tout le monde! (Thank you to everyone!) High School Art Teacher Has Show At Merrick Art Gallery "Etc.," an exhibit by artist Sue Ann Masley was recently on display at the Merrick Art Gallery. The exhibit consisted of 32 pieces. Four paintings and 28 photo-graphs. Many of the photos were from the European and Canada trips she had chap-eroned with Hopewell students. Painting is her original passion. Her foray into photography began with her first trip to Europe. Mrs. Masley has organized art trips to Europe and domestic cities for twenty-one years. As she was providing a culturally enriching experience to her stu-dents; she photographed images. Mrs. Masley would like to thank the Hopewell School District and her family for this opportunity. Her eye for geometry and pattern in the natural environment is a constant influ-ence in her work.
FIRST PLACE TEAMS!
Hopewell students had another successful year at the 2011 Beaver County Envirothon. The Envirothon combines in-class
curriculum and outdoor training to help students learn more about Aquatic Ecology, Forestry, Soil & Land Use, Wildlife, and Cur-
rent Environmental Issues. Both junior and senior high teams placed first in the county. The senior high team will travel to Susquehanna University and
Shikellamy State Park to compete in the Pennsylvania State Envirothon. Members of the junior high team are Peter Kopar and Sydney Kane. The senior high team members are Joe McFarland and Josh Biesenkamp. Mr. Jody Biesenkamp is the sponsor for these groups.
Walk For Autism The eighth grade class of Hopewell Junior High walked 5k (3.1 mile) for Au-tism research. We raised $800.00 this year. All 8th graders who walked were asked to donate $1.00 to Autism Speaks Organization. T-shirts were designed my Carissa Newhouse this year. Junior High Teachers and Staff also donated and 8th grade staff walked with the students.
Everyday, one child in every one hun-dred fifty births is diagnosed with Au-tism, one of the fastest growing devel-opmental disability disorders. Research is being conducted to find a cure for au-tism, but the research is expensive. Anyone was welcome to join us we started at the Jr. High and proceed to the High School walked around the track and back to the Jr. High.

Senior High Awarded Highmark Healthy High 5 School Challenge
Grant
“Inspire Me - Fitness Program” will be de-buting in physical education classes for stu-dents in grades 9-12 at Hopewell High School this spring. Through the efforts of Hopewell Physical Education teacher, Mrs. Margaret Heranic, the high school was awarded a Highmark Healthy High 5 School Challenge Grant in the amount of $9600 to purchase an indoor “Railyard Ob-stacle Course”. The purpose of the Highmark School Challenge grant is to improve the health of children and adolescents ages 6-18 by providing them with the tools and practices needed to make informed decisions about living healthier lives. At Hopewell High School, the Physical Edu-cation staff will utilize the obstacle course during physical education classes to engage students in a variety of strength and condi-tioning activities to increase student participa-tion and motivate students to achieve their goals for healthy, active, and physically fit lifestyles.

6th Grade Studies Pop-Culture Through the Decades With the help of Junior High Librarian, Mrs. Lash, the sixth grade Social Studies classes of Mrs. Kuzma, Mrs. Lewis and Mrs. Yurcina, rocked out the decades. The fun began with researching pop-culture of a decade from the 1950’s through the 1990’s. Each student was assigned a decade, and used resources such as the internet and books to complete note cards and bibliography sheets. They then partnered up with another sixth grader to design a Power Point presentation incorporat-ing what they learned from their research. Power Points were then presented during week-long celebrations of each era. All sixth grade students enjoyed learning from one another’s presentations, playing trivia games, dressing up like those of the decade, and tasting foods introduced to the world in each decade. They watched movies and television shows from each decade, and listened to music pumping through hallways and class-rooms in the morning and in between classes. Even the teachers got involved. So much fun was had by all. Many students said it was their favorite part of the year.
On Saturday, May 14, at Derry Area Mid-dle School, the Mathematics Council of Western Pennsylvania held the final round of its’ First Year Algebra Contest. At the awards ceremony, Rachel Falk of Hopewell Junior High School was presented with a plaque for being top scorer in the Beaver-Butler-Lawrence Counties Region. Above, Robert Blamick, Contest Chairman, presents Rachel her award.
The Hopewell Memorial Junior High School inducted 18 students into the National Junior Honor Society on March 15th, 2011. A message from the Superintendent…
On Friday June 10, 2011 Hopewell Area School District commencement ceremonies were held for the Hopewell Senior High School Class of 2011. If there is one message that we as parents and educators would like for our graduates to keep in their hearts it is that your family is im-portant. The love of your family is unconditional. This message will always get you through both good times and the bad ones. Go out into the world, make your mark, and do great things. Every day, remind yourself of your own ability, of your good mind and affirm that you can make something really good out of your life. But no matter what, maintain your family as a priority! Talk with them, visit them and continue to enjoy the moments that life offers. Come back to us! This community is a great place to live and to raise a family! On behalf of the Board of Directors, Faculty and Administration: Congratulations and Best of Luck to the Graduating Class of 2011. Very Truly Yours,
Charles M. Reina, Ed. D.
