aboard the 120 ft. Royal Winner Princess II. We all celebrated the beginning of another magical Holiday Season here on Pleasure Island. We had
our Annual Meeting, selected a new 2012 Board of Directors and handed out a few Thank-You’s to a few deserving individuals and organizations.
Take a minute and view some of the memories documented by our own Paul Boroznoff of Southern Digital Art.com.

New Animals Settle In at the NC Aquarium
A yearling green sea turtle, a school of juvenile African pompano and four baby bonnethead sharks now make their home in the “Shadows on the Sand” exhibit at the N.C. Aquarium at Fort Fisher. Move-in began in recent weeks. First, the baby bonnethead sharks
(Syphyrna tiburo) joined a variety of rays already living in the exhibit. The shark siblings, all female, were born at the Aquari-um in September. Their mother can be seen swimming in the Cape Fear Shoals exhibit. Next, a yearling green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) joined the bonnethead pups. This animal hatched from eggs found in a late-laid nest in Emerald Isle and arrived at the Aquarium in Decem-ber 2010. The turtle initially weighed one ounce (28 grams) and measured 2.28 inches (5.8 centimeters). Now significantly larg-er, the yearling will help educate visitors about the federally pro-tected species. After staff determined the sharks and turtle were acclimating to their new surroundings and each other, a school of juvenile Afri-can pompano (Alectis ciliaris) were added to the exhibit. These fish were collected from Core and Pamlico Sounds and sport spectacular trailing dorsal fins.

8th Annual Steve Haydu St.
Patrick’s Day LoTideRun Will be held Saturday, March 17, 2011 beginning at 9:00 am in Carolina Beach, NC. The proceeds will be given to one or more cancer patients and families. This is the
8th year of the race to benefit local recipients who are fighting cancer and have no insurance. We have grown from 157 runners in 2005 to nearly 1400 runners in 2009. Our race had become a favorite of serious runners as well as those just out to have a good time and support a great cause. This is a wonderful opportunity to show your support for our community The 8th Annual Steve Haydu St. Patrick’s Lo Tide Run has added a new element to its already great tradition of a great time for a great cause – an After Party Event for the whole family. This year there will be arts and crafts vendors, food vendors, and alcohol at the Carolina Beach Gazebo area from 8am-7pm. Edge Entertainment’s DJ Mike Worley will be playing your favorite music from 8am until 12:30pm. At 1pm the event is turned into a ticketed event featuring a mixture of live music from some great local musicians, a family fun Zone operated by Island Drop-n-Play with activities supplied by the Boardwalk Makeover , and lots of surprises. The Live Music line-up has a mixture of Irish bands and music that will get you dancing and in the festive St. Patty’s Day mood. The Malones and the Blarney Broughs will fill you with Irish pride by playing their versions of Irish classics, and maybe some of their own Irish jigs. Root Soul Project and Mark Roberts and the Breeze will play a wide assortment of cover tunes from your favorite artists from yesterday and today. This is an event that you don’t want to miss. Race registrants can purchase discounted After Party Event tickets at www.lotiderun.org for $7 each (with no limit on quantity) when they register for the race. If you are not planning on racing you can purchase tickets for the After Party Event and still help out a great cause and have a great time by going to www.lotide.eventbrite.com for $10 each, and $5 for children under 12. $3 Domestic 16oz cans & Draught beer and $3 6oz wine. Sounds like an event not to miss. There are a limited number of tickets available and tickets will be $15 at the door, so get them quick and help to support a great cause & have a great time.

Letter From the Chair
Dear Members: Welcome to a new year of fun and excitement on Pleasure Island! I hope that all of you had a wonderful Holiday season and are eager to get this New Year underway. I am excited to have the opportunity to be your 2012 Chairman and look forward to working closely with you and the Chamber staff to make this year the best ever! For those who may not know me, I am Mike Worley and I have lived in this area for 5 years and own Edge Entertainment which is a local
business that specializes in providing music and emcee duties for all types of events from festivals, weddings and anything in between. I would like to personally thank all of our sponsors, volunteers and Chamber staff for all of the hard work to make all of our events a success last year. From the monthly socials, Thursday night fireworks, Chowder Cook Off, Touch of Class Charity Auction, Beach Music Festival and the Seafood Blues and Jazz Festival we had great participation from our membership and drew great crowds to Pleasure Island. We are becoming known for our quality events and being a premier destination for families to spend their vacation. From a business point of view, our Chamber is not only very affordable, but it offers many benefits to its members. Such benefits are: monthly socials to network with other business professionals, monthly business spotlights, numerous opportunities for exposure through volunteering and/or sponsoring an event. And coming this year, we are launching an updated Chamber website which allows members to have their own personal page within our website. One thing to remember is that even though all of these benefits are available, it’s up to you to take advantage of them and reap the benefits of being a member! I would like to encourage you to take the time to get involved in some way this year. One upcoming event is the January 10
th Carolina Beach City Council meeting. It would be a great time
to come out and welcome the new Mayor and Council as well as show your support for the Chamber’s proposal for funding this year’s events. Without funding, Fireworks, Sunday Movies and the other events you have come to enjoy, may not take place. So, once again, I encourage you to attend this meeting and show your support! Our first social this year will be at the Lazy Pirate on Wednesday, January 11
th. This will be a
great time to enjoy the company of other business people in a relaxed environment! I look forward to working with you this year and if you have any ideas of how we can better improve our programs or events, don’t hesitate to let us know! Sincerely,
Mike Worley 2012 Chairman-Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce
