What is pLink Leadership?

pLink Leadership has one big goal: to accelerate positive change.

It’s all based on one big idea: fusing the science of positive psychology with the discipline of leadership to transform the world of work.

Or as we call it, making the positivity link to more effective leadership and better business performance.

To accomplish our big goal, we have written our own content to synthesize leading-edge thinking with practical experience, creating experiential learning that taps into intellectual, emotional, and somatic insights. By addressing all three aspects of the human intelligence system, we provide real opportunity for people to level up their consciousness and leadership effectiveness.

Our modular approach means:• Our modules can be scaled from keynote to multi-day programs. • Our programs can be delivered in-person and/or virtually. • Each module can stand alone or be part of a larger curriculum.

Format:• Each pLink module is designed to allow for self-directed learning on a readily accessible on-line

learning platform, a small teach, a larger practice, an even larger discussion, and a clear commitment to action, all within a 2-hour time frame.

• Modules can be strung together to create a full-day experience.

Adaptive MindsetIn today’s business environment, there is uncertainty and volatility that often requires adaptation and rapid response to change. Many challenges do not allow incremental change – instead, they require leaders to fundamentally change their approach. Adaptation is best done as an inside-out job (autonomy) rather than outside-in (imposed). This course offers ways to cultivate an adaptive mindset.

Adaptive OrganizationThis leadership module is about the importance of strategic alignment, an often-forgotten part of well-executed strategy. Organizations need to be adaptive to ensure sustainability, and strategy isn’t enough if it doesn’t cascade throughout the organization.

Authentic LeadershipAuthentic leadership, when practiced, is a differentiating strength. Participants will discover (from the research on wholehearted living by Brené Brown) that when challenges arise, as they always do, the path to sustainable exemplary leadership is not through impenetrable shields, but rather through the wholehearted embrace of the authentic self.

Cadence of CommunicationLeadership is fundamentally relational – it is dependent on the competency of the leader to build and maintain relationships with the people around them while also delivering tangible results. Leading others, using communication and accountability, is made more consistent and predictable by creating a rhythm of well-designed, structured, and well-led meetings.

Courageous AuthenticityBecoming a leader is an entirely different kind of challenge than earning a leadership position. Earning the position is based primarily on competence and can be, for the most part, a solo journey, where risks can be taken quietly and consequences borne out individually. Becoming a leader is a journey that is defined by taking risks in pursuit of the highest good for everyone. The risks are taken publicly, and the consequences borne out collectively. This course examines courageous authenticity as a creative competency and a necessary ingredient to leadership.

Creative LeadershipCreative leadership is about evolving the capacity and capability to be effective and deliver strong business performance amid increasing complexity, rapid change, and disruption. The concepts of Inner Game/Outer Game and Consciousness are examined as part of Creative and Reactive orientations to leadership.

Culture of Coaching: Mindset and Stance of a CoachMindset and Stance of a Coach is a course designed to shift leadership focus and energy from “solving problems” to helping other people solve their own problems. The practicum will remind leaders of the power of coaching and introduce a simple six-question outline to prompt great coaching conversations. The goal is to create a culture of coaching within the workplace and shift the focus from “knowing the answer” to “asking the questions.”

Culture of Coaching: Asking Powerful Questions(Pre-requisite: Mindset and Stance of a Coach) Asking Powerful Questions is a practicum designed to deepen the practice of coaching that began with Mindset and Stance of a Coach. The practicum will support leaders in developing their questioning skills and in building a library of powerful questions that open up possibilities. Leaders will continue to practice holding the mindset and stance of a coach, utilizing the Coaching Cascade framework, and improving their effectiveness as a coach by asking intentional and powerful questions.

PositivePace® Course Descriptions

DecisivenessDecision-making has become more complex in recent years, as historically hierarchical organizations are flattening out their approach and distributing decision-making responsibilities across levels of leadership. When leaders are decisive, they help their teams focus on strategic goals and build confidence in peers, senior leaders, and direct reports. This course will give participants practical tools for confident decision making.

Demystifying ChangeIn a Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, Ambiguous (VUCA) environment, change is the number-one thing that most leaders and organizations are grappling with. There are two types of change initiatives, Technical and Adaptive, and each requires a different kind of solution. When adaptive change is needed, technical solutions won't work. Most, if not all, of the change that organizations are dealing with now is adaptive.

Emotional AgilityLeading change, including the most sensitive aspects of it, along with a fast-paced business environment, can trigger emotion. Emotions are part of the human condition and offer great insights and direction, depending on whether a leader reacts poorly or responds appropriately. How a leader handles emotion has an impact on their actions and thus on results and even career. Rather than orphaning off emotions, participants will discover how emotions can be informative, can be used as guidance and a source of information, and can contribute to how others perceive a leader’s authenticity. This course will help leaders cultivate the capacity to remain flexible in stressful situations and help others do the same.

Focus and ChoiceThe demands on the modern executive are 24-7-365, and it is easy to get caught up working on things that aren’t essential for success. The disciplined pursuit of less is about stepping back, taking stock of what is vital versus trivial, and making choices to focus on the most important things. If leaders aren’t doing this for themselves, someone else will do it for them. This course is about the practice of focusing on the essential things that allow a leader to make the highest contribution at work, with the team, and at home.

Fundamentals of TrustAmong the many changes of the last three decades is a shift in business norms, to realize the power of motivating with vision and purpose and of leading by presence, rather than position. This course explores the importance of trust, what contributes or takes away from trust, and how to operationalize that understanding and make it practical and accessible. Participants will discuss specific behaviors that a leader can choose to model if they would like to deliberately improve trust between themselves and others, especially with their colleagues.

Goal SettingThe business world is evolving in rapid and surprising ways, and leaders must continue to grow and adapt to meet the needs of the business world. Keeping the pace means developing competence, character, and consciousness in an intentional and timely way. This course offers leaders opportunities to take responsibility for their own growth by becoming clear about the goals they want to achieve and then applying a practical goal-setting process.

Invite InnovationThis course explores innovation and how important it is to enabling organizations to grow revenue and sustain success, particularly in a market with so much disruption. While innovation at its best is a systemic, organization-wide commitment, there are “best practices” that individual leaders can implement to foster innovation, and these are the focus of this conversation.

Leadership FlexIn mature business environments, a leader has more latitude to use the same style consistently and shift up focus only on demand. In rapidly changing environments, however, a leader must be ambidextrous in their style and agile in their focus. This is no small ask, because when under pressure, it’s natural to become less flexible and thus less resilient. This course aims to change the way leaders acknowledge and respond to adversity.

Leadership Style GuideA leader’s style – the way they provide direction, deal with challenges, and communicate with direct reports and peers – can impact their ability to build trust, accountability, and engagement. An effective leader understands their impact up, down, and across their organization. Rather than being fixed, a leader’s style can evolve and become more intentional. This course will introduce a leadership style guide and offer ways for creating open, transparent dialogue in the workplace.

Listening for Total MeaningPressures at work and at home, a fast-paced lifestyle, unparalleled access to information, and a reliance on electronics all have contributed to shrinking attention spans and decreased listening skills. In the short amount of time devoted to conversations, the tendency is to evaluate or react to what is said, instead of concentrating on what the other person is trying to express. When this becomes a pattern, it trains the speaker to say less and say it faster. This also contributes to saying what is pleasing, instead of speaking the truth. Listening is essential to communication, and clear communication is crucial to successful leadership. Leaders who practice reflective listening are modeling self-regulation, interpersonal intelligence, and approachability.

Navigating Difficult ConversationsThe ability to engage in difficult conversations is essential to effective leadership. Most leaders see this as part of their job, yet many leaders avoid these types of conversations. In any difficult conversation, the likelihood of igniting fear and distrust in the other person will be high. Preparing in advance will help to get clear on the issues, to listen to the other person, and to stay curious and creative.

Pitching UpTo effect positive change in an organization, it is imperative to share and promote original thinking. Such ideas succeed when a leader builds support for plans and brings others along. The ability to do this well requires an increase in the capacity to influence senior leadership, peers, and other teams. This course will explore practices to effectively promote and pitch ideas.

Priorities and ChoiceTry as we may, try as we might, it always seems that we have too much to do and not enough time to do it. Our ability to create the outcomes that matter most is linked to our ability prioritize, that is, put tasks in relation to each other (systems perspective) and in order of importance. Our ability to prioritize well is linked to our ability to manage our mindshare (cognitive/emotional/physical energy available), make difficult choices, and engage our teams in a collaborative process that includes, informs, and directs all at one time. This course is about gaining control of your body of work, creating focus and positive momentum by better understanding the biology of choice, and the mechanics of prioritization.

Say it SimplerIn a world that requires the processing of five times more information each day than twenty years ago, it has become critical to simplify any message, if it is to be heard. Clear communication is essential to effective leadership, but leaders often unconsciously blur the message with emotional or intellectual complexity. Participants in this course will discover what happens for the listener when these different types of complexity are present and will actively practice ways to decrease this, as both a communicator and a receiver.

Self CareThis course is about improving performance at work and in life by way of taking better physical care of the self, specifically examining the ways that well-being impacts optimum performance. Participants will explore the connection between prioritizing physical well-being – sleep, physical activity, and nourishment (nutrition and hydration) – and optimum performance.

Strengths-based LeadershipStrengths-based leadership is an evidence-based body of work that provides the frame for this course (grounded in research, not opinion). Using personal strengths, while also being aware of and developing the strengths of team members, translates into increased engagement of employees, better business performance for the organization, and increased well-being for each employee.

TeamingThis course is about the importance of teaming which, simply put, is “teamwork on the fly.” In this era of adaptive challenges, there are no clear answers for many of the issues faced on a day-to-day, if not hour-to hour, basis. In order to drive innovation and growth, leaders are being asked to engage in cross-functional collaborations more and more often. The reality is that cross-functional collaboration and fluid teaming (teams that evolve over time) are required to solve adaptive challenges, so despite its difficult nature, it is essential to learn how to team successfully.

Values in ActionThis course will explore how values underpin and guide a meaningful life and how they contribute to positive emotion, engagement with self, strong positive relationships, and achievement. Participants will discover a renewed sense of appreciation for values as a source of strength and insight, as well as heightened awareness of the opportunity and complexity that diverse values bring to the workplace.

Best Future SelfWhen we take the time to step back and gain a little distance from our everyday life, we are able to transition to a new perspective of self and the world. This course will provide an opportunity for participants to go to the future, imagine possibilities that are inspiring, strategize on how to get from here to there — and motivate the courage to cross the threshold!

Change CurveWe often hear the quote, “the only thing we can count on is change.” If this is true, wouldn’t it be helpful to understand what happens as we move though change? Whether the change is personal (relationship, job, career) or professional (the agency or team is going through a transition), this course will equip participants with a solid construct with which to view the phases of change and will provide specific tools to help while moving through them.

Climate of ContributionThe pace of our lives, driven by the technological and global demands of our current world, is swifter than we’ve ever experienced before, and it is not likely to slow down. With this additional pressure, the ability to build and sustain an environment where it is safe to speak up and contribute is everybody’s responsibility (not just the leader’s). Establishing psychological safety in the workplace is the key to creating a climate of contribution.

Emotional AgilityResearch points to the fact that being agile with thoughts and feelings – being able to navigate emotions quickly and easily – allows people to deal with the unpredictable twists and turns of work and life more successfully. This course will help participants to identify triggers, traps, and behaviors that aren’t working, and to develop ways to access more effective responses in challenging, sensitive, or conflicted situations.

EssentialismThe pace of our lives is moving faster and faster. Many of us know the frustration of having too many priorities and feeling unsatisfied with results at work and in life. This course offers an opportunity to discover the art and practice of essentialism: discerning what is essential and how to focus on those things in order to make our highest contribution at work, with our teams, and at home.

Exploring IdentitiesMany of us have been taught to set high standards for ourselves. We may get caught up in unrealistic expectations or lose sleep listening to our greatest fears, when working on a project or leading an initiative. This course will inspire participants to quiet the critical, internal voice that drives unrealistic expectations and to let go of the fears around what others might think or say.

Healthy StrivingThe quest for happiness is core to the human experience because we are, by our nature, hungry for growth. Long-ingrained beliefs drive the relentless pursuit of achievement, recognition, and reward. As a result, It is not unusual to see people suffering from burnout in every sector of our society. This course, based on the Theory of Well-Being, will provide participants with an evidence-based framework for healthy striving.

MindfulnessWe currently process five times as much information per day compared to a person 20 years ago. We are living in a rapidly changing and unpredictable environment with many competing and challenging demands coming at us from a variety of sources throughout our day. The purpose of this course is to give you a background and an introduction to mindful practices to help you enhance your awareness, maintain focus, and utilize calm, creative responses in the face of the incredible pace of modern-day life.

Personal VisionWhat do you stand for? Who are you? What’s your passion? What is your big purpose in life? These questions surround the age-old idea of personal vision. Our personal vision comes to life at the intersection of our deepest held values, desires, and hopes. This course will assist participants in defining a personal vision so it can serve as a compass in today’s complex world, when leading self and leading others.

Positive FramingFocusing on positive framing is important because negativity is all around us. Furthermore, the human brain is hard-wired to notice, and give more weight to, negative factors than to positive. The good news is, as research tells us, that increasing positive emotion acts not only as a counterweight but offers an abundance of other benefits. This course will help participants become intentional about harnessing the power of positivity to expand choices and achieve better outcomes – personally and professionally.

Self Care - VitalityThe stress in our lives is increasing and the demands of our workday have expanded over the last decade. When we are busy, the first thing we sacrifice is our downtime and our self-care. This course will help participants discover the benefits of self-care and create a solid plan to include it in their daily practices.

StrengthsWorking from our strengths changes both effort and outcome. Learning about strengths theory leads us to find that sweet spot, to know what it feels like to work with ease and flow, and to be the most effective leader and team-member possible. This course will help participants intentionally direct themselves to their highest purpose by investing in their own strengths and in the strengths of those around them.

Thought BridgingOur brain is busy deciphering hundreds of thousands of stimuli per day and manufacturing thousands of thoughts per day, even while we are sleeping, watching TV, or answering emails. It can be relatively easy to get stuck in thinking patterns that may be inaccurate and contributing to outcomes we do not want. Using the brain-savvy and psychologically skillful thought bridging techniques to observe and direct one’s thinking is a foundational resiliency practice. It allows us to choose our response. This may, in fact, be one of the most important things to ever learn!

ValuesAs we accept the call to individual and collective courageous leadership, we need strategies to help ground ourselves in our values, to remind ourselves of the purpose of our actions. This course will help participants identify their top values and discover how living in alignment with those values correlates to psychological, emotional, and physical resilience.
