Former Democrat reporter and columnist Ron Jennings was greeted with a standing ovation from family and peers after his induction into the Missouri Press Association Hall of Fame Friday night in Branson. Jennings was among six in- ductees during the MPA’s 21st induction ceremony, held last weekend in conjunction with the group’s 145th annual con- vention. He was joined by fam- ily members and former co-workers during Friday’s ceremony. Jennings, who worked for the Democrat from 1972 to 2007, is the first Democrat journalist to receive the honor, and was added to this year’s honorees after a nomination ef- fort led by Democrat Editor Bob Satnan and former re- porter Jay Nies. With health issues keeping Ron from speaking during the ceremony, his thoughts and words were shared with atten- dees by his brother, Steve. “First of all, you need to know that I never saw this coming,” Steve read. “After re- covering from the shock of such happy news, the reality of it all began to sink in. And, the reality is, simply, that I have been allowed the great honor of standing on the shoulders of giants.” Jennings said these “giants” included the MPA, his alma mater, the University of Mis- souri — Columbia School of Journalism, former and current members of the Democrat staff, and former State Fair Community College Board President Bill Hopkins, who, Jennings said, “challenged me early in my career to be the voice of Sedalians.” Jennings also thanked his family, including his wife, Pat, and daughters Megan Simon and Katie Poynter, who were in attendance at the ceremony (daughter Mary Pillars was un- able to attend). Ron was also joined by his sister, Tammy Heath, and her husband, Andy on Friday night. His deepest thanks were re- served for the people of Sedalia and readers of the De- mocrat, many of whom wrote letters in support of his nomi- nation earlier this year. He said he thanked “the several generations of Sedalians who have trusted me with their stories. You’ve given me a wonderful life and the honor of a lifetime. I am deeply appreciative and hum- bled,” Ron said Also honored during the in- duction ceremony were: Nor- man J. Colman, the second president of the MPA and first U.S. Secretary of Agriculture; Douglas D. Davis, owner and publisher of the Lamar Democ- rat; the late Nathaniel and Melba Sweets, former pub- lisher and editor, respectively, of the St. Louis American; and Donald E. Be Mindful Of Motorcycles(NAPS)—An average of three lives a day could be saved, experts esti-

mate, if motorists and motorcyclists were more careful at intersections. Infact, crash data reveals that motorcycle crashes happen more often at inter-sections than anywhere else, relative to the amount of time riders spend inthem.

To help, one major insurance company is putting up caution signs onroads all over the country. The yellow, diamond-shaped signs feature amotorcycle silhouette and are inscribed with the word “LOOK” to encour-age motorists to look for motorcycles before crossing an intersection. It’s allpart of Allstate’s “Once is Never Enough” (ONE) program, designed toremind drivers and riders that looking once at intersections is never enough.

“In the time it takes to blinkan eye, a life could be saved,”said Keith Rutman, vice presi-dent of Allstate’s consumerhousehold unit.

Fortunately, there are thingsdrivers, riders and others can do.

Tips for Motorists• Be cautious when going

through intersections.• Look left, right and left

again for motorcyclists. Also, beaware that because of a motorcy-cle’s small size, a bike can easilyhide in a car’s blind spot.

• Allow for greater following distance. Most motorcyclists do not activatetheir brake light when slowing down. They slow down by downshifting.

• Don’t assume motorcyclists are speeding. Due to their small size, motorcycles may seem to be moving faster and appear farther away thanthey really are.

• Motorcyclists often adjust position within a lane. This helps them beseen more easily by motorists. They also tend to avoid the center of the lanebecause of liquids that leak from car engines, transmissions and radiators.

Tips for Motorcyclists• Be cautious when going through intersections.• Be visible when you ride. Try to avoid blind spots, wear bright-colored,

protective clothing, activate turn signals early and always use your head-lights.

• Flash your brake lights when slowing down. This helps others on theroad know your intentions.

• Leave enough space between you and the car in front of you. You’llhave more time to react to other motorists’ actions.

• Ride within your limits. If you’re a new rider, consider taking a train-ing course. Rush hour is not the time to learn how to maneuver your motor-cycle. All riders should avoid extreme temperatures and inclement weather.

Contact your advertising representative if you would like to haveyour business featured in this space.

Motorists and motorcyclists should lookout for each other, especially at intersec-tions.

I took my own advice from a fewweeks ago, and I’m now done settingup fixed position stands. I have standsready and waiting in all of my bestspots, plus a couple of new places Ican’t wait to try out.

About now, many of my fellowbowhunters are saying, “What’s his bighurry?” The archery season legallyopens Thursday, but the real archeryseason doesn’t open until late Octoberand the first week of November. That’swhen I’m going to be in the woods.

The first week of November is a glo-rious time to hunt deer. No matter howgood a deer hunter may be or how hardhe or she hunts, there’s a lot of luckinvolved in getting an arrow and anydeer to occupy the same space at thesame time, let alone a trophy buck.

The last thing I want is to haveeither the big buck I want for my wallor the young doe I want for my freezerto abandon the patterns I’ve beenstudying for months and start chargingthrough the woods willy nilly.

That’s not a problem in the last halfof September and about the first threeweeks of October. Big bucks and doesdon’t spend a lot of time deliberatelyseeking out each other’s company at thistime of the year, but the No. 1 priorityfor both sexes is to ingest as much of thebest quality forage available as possiblein order to build energy reserves for theupcoming rut and ensuing winter. Thisimperative often puts deer of both sexesin the same feeding areas at roughly thesame time.

The key to early season success ishunt choke points on the trails leadingto feeding areas. Depending on the ter-rain, these choke points include creekcrossings, saddles along ridge lines, gaps or low spots in fences and theintersections of hedge rows or othernarrow, but well defined, boundaries.

In central Missouri, creek crossingsare my favorite stand location. Deer areexcellent swimmers, and they can clam-ber up nearly vertical banks, but they

seldom do so if there’s an easier alterna-tive close to where they wanted to go.

Whenever it’s practical, I prefer toset up on a creek crossing or otherchoke point that’s as close to the localdeer herd’s bedding area as possible.

Deer are often active for two hours ormore after daylight in the morning butmay not start moving until nearly sunsetin the evening. Being close to the bed-ding area allows me plenty of time toget in place in the morning and the bestchance to see deer in the evening duringlegal shooting hours.

The fly in the ointment is that nodeer stand is any good if it can’t beapproached without alerting the hunter’sintended targets. While a deer’s sensesof sight and hearing should never be dis-counted, most approachability problemsinvolve finding a way to defeat thedeer’s phenomenal sense of smell.

If you think there is any product youcan spray on yourself or any type ofclothing you can wear that will hideyour scent from a deer’s nostrils, you’remistaken.

The answer to this dilemma is quitesimple. If the air currents are movingfrom you to the deer’s nose or if itcrosses the path you walked in on, itwill smell you. If neither of thosethings happens, it won’t.

What makes working as hard as nec-essary to find a good stand during thefirst few weeks of the season is thatboth bucks and does are predictable atthis time of the year. They use the sametrails at about the same time of day forweeks at a time.
