Getting up in the dark, bundling up, going out in the cold to work or to the store: these are things I can absolutely do without. But while more of this stuff may lie ahead, we’ve turned the corner on the weather—trust me on this!—and soon we’ll be out puttering in our yards planting flowers, trimming shrubs, and just enjoying our beauti- ful neighborhood. Last year was an eventful and, I be- lieve, a productive one for your Board of Directors and Officers. We tackled several projects, including entrances and islands, which will be concluded this spring. We also launched our PGE website, with the hope and expectation that you will find this a very useful informational tool. Our social events were very well attended and provided lots of fun for our families. Over 130 resi- dents attended the Christmas party, up from about 80 in 2008. What a great tribute this is to all of you! Unlike most places where I’ve lived, Plum Grove Estates provides the personal privacy that each of us val- ues and lots of great opportunities to get to know your neighbors. We see walkers, runners, bikers (not so much in February) on a daily basis. We have many things to enjoy and be grateful for. As I have in the past, I am encour- aging you to find some way you can contribute to making Plum Grove Estates an even better place to live. There are always opportunities, and we can only imagine the array of tal- ents that exist among us. Can you help us set up for PGE meetings or one of our parties? What about writ- ing a contribution of general inter- est for our newsletter or Web site? Do you know an exceptional vendor or service provider whom other resi- dents might love to know about? If you go to our Web site, www.pge- poa.org, you can email me or any of the other officers and directors to volunteer your time or to provide us with your thoughts and suggestions. We would really love to hear from you. In the meantime, stay warm and well and look forward to what I’m sure (?) will be an early spring! PGE Paves The Way The last part of the Palatine Town-ship three-year Plum Grove Estatessubdivision paving project tookplace in Summer 2009. Previouspaving of this area took place over10 years ago. John Powers, HighwayCommissioner, wrote “repaving ona regular schedule is much cheaperthan allowing the pavement to de-teriorate to the point that it re-quires massive patching andreconstruction.” (first appeared inthe Summer 2009 Palatine Town-ship newsletter)

The next phase of of paving will bethe responsibility of the Township of Schaumburg. The township applied for Federal funds in 2009 fortransportation initiatives to pay for resurfacing in ourarea. According to the Foreman at the Highway De-partment, the engineering drawings are in progressnow, and when the funding is received the project willbe bid in April. Work is tentatively scheduled tobegin in June.

The City of Rolling Meadows will be improving theWest Frontage Road between Kirchoff and AlgonquinRoads. This project is provided 100% by Federalfunds. The construction includes:• Concrete pavement patching (25% of the road).• Two-inch asphalt overlay (raised surface to help

the road drain)• Curb, gutter, sidewalk, and guard rail repairs• Replacing gravel shoulder with 3’ paved shoulder• Drainage improvementsPhase 1 begins March 1 and continues through theend of April 2010. • During construction only one lane will be open.• All traffic will be one way, southbound only, and

restricted to local traffic.• Please use alternative routes during this time

when possible. Reduced traffic in the constructionwork zone reduces the chance of accidents andthe time needed for construction.

Phase 2, pavement improvements for East FrontageRoad, will begin May 1 and should end by the begin-ning of July. The one-way traffic in the single laneopen will be northbound only for local traffic.

PGE Plans New Entrances and Fences in 2010The Area Control and Landscapingcommittee directors, along with thePGE Board are moving forward withplans to update and beautify the en-trance areas of Plum Grove Estates.

The new PGE sign will be raisedand installed between two stone pil-lars. Fencing that complements thesign will be installed between theother pillars (see drawing). New PGE signs will also beplaced at three interior entrances. The new design was presented toand approved by PGE residents atthe Fall 2009 General Meeting.

The sign presents the PGE logoalong with the subdivision name. The vertical fencing is topped with

decorative circles at the top. Instal-lation should be completed thisSpring to early Summer.

Other improvements include redo-ing the accent lighting. The cobble-stone installation around certainislands will resume this Spring.

If you have any questions aboutArea Control, please call Gary Din-dia at 847-397-3640 or send emailto [email protected].

Landscape plantings for the areaswith the new signs and fencing arebeing reviewed by Lynn Meinzer. The plantings should present a col-orful, interesting, and beautiful ap-pearance yet be hardy, droughttolerant, and easily maintained. Randy thanked Andrea for all thehard work!!

Currently, PGE is running aboutdouble the flow rates that the Sani-tary District is looking for; howeverwe are less than 1% of the flow intothe system. We have reduced from4x the flow rate to 2x the flow rate,so we have made improvements.PGE homeowners have spent wellover 1 million dollars to fix our flowrates. We’ve done our due diligence.

Our lawyers are looking into review-ing the ICAP formula to get awaiver for PGE—otherwise, theSanitary District could go to thenext step of suing individual homeowners. There is no good answer atthis point. If you are pumping waterinto the system via your sumppumps, disconnect them!!

It costs $6,000–$8,000 dollars everytime we test our flow rates. Ideal sit-uations are to test after 1 inch ofrain.
