The Prime Minister’s Youth Award is a prestigious national honourbestowed on outstanding young Jamaicans from age 15 to 24 who demonstrate high standards of achievement and commitment within variousfields. The categories are Agriculture, Entrepreneurship, Academics,Sports, Arts & Culture, Youth in Service, Leadership, Journalism andInternational Achievement. Nominees hail from various walks of life, backgrounds and skill sets but share a common thread of performance at thehighest level. The targeted age cohort is representative of the group forwhich programmes are planned and implemented by the National Centre forYouth Development (NCYD).

The Youth Awards Committee examines and discusses all nominations andsupporting documents in order to finalise a short-list of candidates.Telephone or person-to-person interviews are then conducted between theCommittee and the candidates. Subsequent Committee discussions determine the list of nominees to be recommended to the Prime Minister forawards. Honourees are publicly presented their awards at a ceremonyorganised by the NCYD during the month of November, which is celebrated as Youth Month.

The Prime Minister’s Youth Awards aim to recognise and encourage excellence - that is, exceptional accomplishment from young people whoare poised to become the country’s bright future.

To be considered eligible, a nominee must:

a. Be a Jamaican National (not necessarily a resident).

b. Be age 15-24 years old (born between January 1, 1988 and December 31, 1997).

a. Nominators are required to complete the attached Nomination Form.

b. Nominations should include certified copies of all relevant information including proof of achievements, certificates, transcripts, awards, etc.

c. Overseas nominees must be prepared to undergo a telephone interview at a date to be announced.

d. Jamaica-based nominees must be prepared to attend an interview at a date to be announced.

e. Short-listed nominees must present the following on the day of the interview:

I. Certified copies of birth and examination certificates, transcripts, proof of achievements and awards.

II. Two ( 2 ) 5 x 7 photographs (one must be depicting the nominee in action).

III. Two (2) References (one professional and one character).

f. The National Centre for Y outh Development reserves the right to make the final decision regarding the disbursement of awards to nominees.

The National Centre for Youth Development is inviting nominations for thePrime Minister's Youth Awards for Excellence in the following categories:

The nominee must distinguish him/herself in the field of Agriculture. S/hemust:

- Own and operate an agro-business endeavour which incorporates the useof new technology in agricultural production.

AND/OR

- Have advanced scientific research in agriculture.

The nominee must be distinguished as an emerging youth innovator or entrepreneur. S/he must:

- Operate a profitable business venture.

- Generate levels of direct and indirect employment.

The nominee must display outstanding academic achievement in their fieldof study. S/he must:

- Have completed all units of CAPE Level I and II or A ' Levels (with distinction).

AND/OR

- Have completed a Bachelor Degree and attained a First Class Honours or a Grade Point Average (G.P.A) of 3.8.

AND/OR

- Post Graduate nominees must have completed a thesis with distinction and/or published research papers which have gained international recognition.

The nominee must have achieved significant success at the Junior or Seniorlevel in his/her sport. S/he must:

- Have attained a gold, silver or medal in a junior and/or senior level international competition.

- Have attained a consistent world ranking (1-10) in his/her sport.

- Have consistently been chosen on a team which represents Jamaica at the

international level

The nominee must have proven him/herself to be outstanding in the Visual,Performing, Literary or Culinary Arts or Culture. S/he must:

- Have gained international/national recognition.

- Have participated in a minimum of two critically acclaimed exhibitions or productions.

The nominee must have demonstrated outstanding and consistent voluntaryservice relevant to the development of youth and the community. S/he must:

- Have significantly impacted the youth population.

- Have consistently served (voluntarily) over a five (5) year period.

- Have given service which is not related to any mandatory obligations forwork or school.

The nominee should have consistently demonstrated outstanding leadershipat the national level and inspired others. S/he must:

- Have made significant impact during his/her tenure.

- Demonstrate an active leadership history at Local, National or International level.

- Served at the specified levels for a minimum of three (3) years.

The nominee should have produced a high standard of journalism. S/he must:

- Conduct consistent in depth coverage of National, Regional or International issues relating to Youth Development.

- Demonstrate excellence in mass communications in any of the following:

I. Print Media

II. Electronic Media

III. New Media (Online Journalism inclusive of podcasts, webinars

blogs etc.)
