The E-Book E-Books accounted for 8.5% of all Book Sales in the US in May

2010, compared with 2.9% in May 2009. As of January, 2011, e-book sales are less than 1%- 3% of all book

sales in Australia. 80% of Australian readers still very much prefer a traditionally

bound book to anything on a screen. (SMH Jan) Tertiary libraries- E-Format Preferred.• For example: Random House Australia currently have

approximately 6,000 e-books ready to read, including international and Australian titles, and an ongoing e-book program of new releases

• Apps abound!• The great teen paradox!

Why books still matter?• The importance of shared

experience• The need to read for

pleasure.• The need for permanent

historical artifacts.• Higher degree of

distraction when reading from a screen.

• The need to promote ‘hard reading’ to encourage resilience.
