Manufacturing output growth had eased very slightly and remained modest. Demand had softened in aerospace supply chains, which contacts attributed mainly to the industry entering the ‘de-stocking phase’ of the product cycle. There were mixed reports from the automotive sector, mainly due to weakness in some export-related supply chains. Demand for operational equipment for the oil and gas sector had fallen, although orders of exploration equipment had held up. Manufacturers of capital equipment for the food sector reported increasing demand, although reports from food manufacturers about their output were mixed. Bank of England Agents’ summary of business conditions May 2015 - here

I News Markit/CIPS UK Manufacturing PMI® rises 1. The UK manufacturing sector saw further modest

expansions of both output and new orders in May, as a solid domestic market continued to offset lacklustre demand from overseas. The consumer goods sector remained the stand-out performer, while investment goods producers fared better than in April. Negative news came from the intermediate goods sector, where the downturn in output continued. The seasonally adjusted Markit/CIPS Purchasing Manager’s Index® (PMI®) – a summary indicator of overall manufacturing sector health – ticked higher to 52.0 in May, up from a revised reading of 51.8 in April (previously reported as 51.9). The PMI has remained above the neutral 50.0 mark for 26 months. More - here

The Future of ‘GAIN’ & the Growth Hub Service 2. Free and impartial business support advice and signposting continues to be

available from the Growth Hub, and following the recent announcement of investment from the Growth Deal, the Growth Hub is evolving. The Growth Hub Interim Service (GHI) is to provide independent diagnosis and brokerage (from July this year) to existing business support services while providing a seamless, smooth transition from the existing City Deal Growth Hub to a new service which is anticipated to start in early 2016. The GHI will be a first-stop-shop which will engage with business via various platforms. It will support and link in with existing local and national initiatives without duplicating their offer. The Growth Hub is the Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership’s (HotSW LEP) main mechanism of engaging with businesses across the area. GAIN (Growth Acceleration and Investment Network) is the current service provider that delivers the Growth Hub through the City Deal and the service uses GAIN branding. Since the new service will be funded through different funding streams, the Growth Hub will need to be re-commissioned; therefore it isn’t currently known who will be the new provider for this service. The current Growth Hub service covers the whole of the Heart of the South West area plus Cornwall (which combined make up the City Deal area). More - here. Manufacturing exporters buck the trend despite exchange rate challenges, says BCC and DHL report 3. BCC and DHL Quarterly International Trade Outlook of more than 2,300 exporting firms has revealed

that 46% of manufacturers reported increased export orders in Q1, compared to 36% in Q4 2014. Meanwhile, the proportion of service firms that recorded increased export sales remained steady at 33%. Furthermore, almost half of exporting manufacturers surveyed (44%) increased their labour force in the first three months of 2015. The vast majority of these new jobs were full-time positions (84%), up from 61% in Q4 2014. This level of growth has been achieved in the face of increasing pressure from higher exchange rates in particular the rising pound against the euro, which reached a seven-year high in early March 2015. More than half of manufacturing firms surveyed (55%) said that exchange rates are having an impact on their ability to trade globally, compared to 48% in Q4 2014 and 34% at the same time last year. II PMG Members’ News New division and new home for Plymouth’s Applied Automation 5. Rapidly growing Plymouth manufacturer Applied

Automation (UK) Ltd is launching a new division. The Plympton based company is unveiling Applied Industrial Systems, a division which will focus on supplying factory equipment such as trolleys, workbenches and conveyors. The launch coincides with the move to a new factory that is more than twice the size of its current site. Applied Automation has renovated the former St Ives premises on Langage Industrial Estate and is in the midst of moving all of its teams. The Industrial Systems division will encompass the hugely successful MayTec team that has achieved its seventh year of consecutive growth, seeing a whopping 35% increase in sales in 2014/15. The team supplies aluminium profiles and assemblies such as work benches and safety enclosures for machines. New product ranges will include a pipe and joint system used to build factory equipment such as trolleys and shelving and Carryline conveyors. Managing Director David Rowe, who has just won the Plymouth Herald’s Entrepreneur of the Year award, said: “The MayTec profile system is hugely popular and we needed more space for the team, but we also identified an opportunity to increase the range. The pipe and joint system is incredibly versatile and we’re excited to have signed a national agreement to supply the Carryline conveyor system. We expect 2015/16 to see a further growth in sales, especially with these new product lines and the additional processing and stores capacity. We’re also delighted to be taking the new Industrial Systems division to the big PPMA Show at the NEC in Birmingham later this year where we can showcase these products.”

Pipex px® plans new Resin Infusion Centre of Excellence, or ‘R.I.C.E. building’

6. Pipex px® is delighted to announce that it has recently completed the purchase of an additional 4,500 sq ft of manufacturing space adjacent to the Pipex px® Head Quarters at the Devon Enterprise Facility in Roborough, Plymouth, UK. Also included in this purchase is the freeholds for all the existing onsite Pipex px® factories, yards, roadways and frontage areas which connect the Pipex units. Significant remodelling and builders work will now commence to remove connecting internal walls, combining two existing units to create a 13,500 sq ft advanced manufacturing facility, that is standalone and additional to our other factory areas - The Pipex px® Resin Infusion Centre of Excellence, or R.I.C.E. building, which will house all our advanced FRP composites and associated advanced manufacturing capabilities. Due for completion by the close of Summer 2015, this dedicated Resin Infusion facility will house a bespoke jumbo-sized (amongst the largest in the UK) 30M long 5 Axis CNC machine, designed and built in-house by Pipex px® Specialist Fabrication Director Adrian Kennett, accompanied with overhead craneage, drying ovens, resin transfer machines and a modular clean room. This considerable investment in state of the art facilities to machine and manufacturing large composite solutions for the rail, subsea and oil & gas markets fully complements Pipex px® unique ability to offer advanced design and specialist installation services, further cementing our reputation as the UK’s leading advanced FRP composites design, fabrication and installation expertise. R.I.C.E. will enable Pipex px® to provide an even greater range of bespoke structural solutions for our clients completely in-house, together with the ability to adapt to changes in manufacturing requirements with improved efficiency and speed. The purchase was partially funded by a £100K grant from the GAIN growth fund and will be instrumental in creating a number of highly skilled new manufacturing jobs in the Plymouth area. More - here

Manuplas’ marine systems and capabilities on display at Seawork 7. Manuplas’ parent company, Advanced Insulation, is

attending Seawork this June to promote the Estover-based firm’s range of marine buoys and fender systems. Advanced Insulation is a leading manufacturer of technical and insulation materials for the upstream oil and gas industry, and also specialise in the design, engineering and manufacture of polymer solutions for the marine and offshore sectors. Commenting for Advanced Insulation, Guy Downie, head of sales for its Manuplas buoyancy products says: “This is a really exciting year to be attending Seawork as we have so much to tell the market. Firstly, there’s the news and expansion plans regarding Advanced Insulation’s acquisition of Manuplas. Secondly, there’s the on-going research that has gone into developing leading concepts for lightweight fender solutions.” This research and development has seen the company develop and manufacture high-performance products, incorporating physically cross-linked polyethylene foams which, to increase abrasion and tear resistance, are sprayed in a unique protective marine-grade polyurethane coating that allows for the incorporation of a nylon or Kevlar reinforcement in the skin. 9. Peter Rogers, Chief Executive commented, “Babcock performed strongly last year, both organically and through acquisitions. We achieved double digit organic growth in revenue and operating profit driven by major contract wins and by expanding the size and scope of existing contracts. Growth from Marine and Technology and Support Services has been particularly compelling. Our recent acquisitions have continued to perform in line with our expectations and have created an excellent platform for future growth”. The Marine and Technology division achieved organic revenue growth of 14% at constant exchange rates. Team Hymid Scoop Silver as National Runner-up in EEF’s ‘Developing People’ Award 10. (Extracts from the Hymid blog) ‘As South West regional

winner, we donned our tuxedos for the Nationals at the Grand Connaught Rooms London, and were thrilled to win runner up - pipped to the post by the UK arm of German firm ZF Lemforder, a 100 million t/o company, with 350 staff. Not bad for an SME of >40 staff! The entry form pulled no punches in its rigorous examination of how, when, why and wherefores: 2000 words, a nail-biting presentation to the judges, and one gala dinner later, we return to the South West feeling proud, it's a real achievement to be recognised at this level. The judges said we "delivered a passionate and enthusiastic presentation of a great story encompassing extensive work done over the last couple of years that has led to great examples of best practice management. The business went about developing a multi-dimensional development programme to address skills shortage, an aging workforce and to grow management capability. With a “people-led”, collaborative approach this business is reaping the benefits in terms of turnover, profitability and productivity." More - here and here

Permaban EEF manufacturing award success

11. ‘We're pleased and proud to have achieved a High Commendation in the national finals of the EEF Future Manufacturing Awards, in the Business Growth category. This success is testament to our sustainable business planning, and to the hard work and close collaboration of our commercial and manufacturing teams. Above all, we thank our customers for their ongoing business and support, the most important part of our business success’. More - here and here

Rittal publish a new whitepaper on ‘Industry 4.0’

12. Manufacturing can become faster and much more flexible with consistent, IT-assisted value chains. A newly published whitepaper from Rittal shows the key role IT plays in what is termed Industry 4.0 and explains how companies can establish the infrastructure that is required to bring the concept to fruition. The new ‘IT infrastructure in the context of Industry 4.0’ whitepaper from Rittal is now available to download. The document is aimed at decision-makers as well as anyone responsible for production and IT and details the opportunities that Industry 4.0 is creating through new and existing infrastructures. The whitepaper shows how IT and production can be effectively interlinked, and outlines the interdependence of ‘back office’ and ‘factory’ functions. It also highlights the similarity of the challenges faced by production managers and system administrators as well as the differences that continue to exist between them. To function effectively and maximise the benefits afforded by Industry 4.0 the differences between these two parts of the business must narrow. More – here and here

III Business to Business – including grants & funding Government Broadband Connection Voucher Scheme 13. As we announced in our April newsletter, businesses in Plymouth can now get a simple and easy

grant of up to £3,000 to upgrade to faster, better broadband through the Government Broadband Connection Voucher Scheme. The vouchers mean that any business with below 250 employees (known as SMEs) can apply to get enhanced connectivity – including those who run their business from home. The statistics tell us that better access to the web is key to business growth. According to McKinsey in 2011 “Small businesses that go online grow twice as fast as their competitors”. You don’t have to be an expert to benefit either – even small changes will help and we have a series of events to talk you through the basics. The vouchers are available for 12 months across 50 locations in the UK on a first come first served basis. The city already has the 8th best spread of Superfast Broadband in the UK so we hope that city businesses can capitalise on this opportunity and get as many businesses upgraded as possible. Improved connectivity can help your business to: Increase business efficiency and productivity, Reduce the risk of downtime, Sell more with better websites and better online marketing, Save money by using online “cloud based” software which can grow with your business and saves

ERIKS Guide to: Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) 15. ESOS assessments must be carried out every four years by all large UK

undertakings. A large undertaking is classified by more than 250 people OR turnover more than €50 million (£38,937,777) a year with an annual balance sheet of over €43 million (£33,486,489).These audits of the energy used by large companies in their buildings, industrial processes and transport are used to identify cost-effective energy-saving measures. The latest deadline for notifying The Environment Agency that an organisation is ESOS-compliant is 5th December 2015. If you qualify for ESOS and your organisation is not fully covered through ISO 50001 certification, you need to appoint a lead assessor to conduct and/or supervise your energy audits and approve your overall ESOS assessment. Lead assessors can be employees or from external contractors as long as they are registered members of an approved professional body. As a knowledgeable, experienced and approved assessor, ERIKS can help you carry out and/or review your assessments, compiling the necessary Evidence Pack for submission to The Environment Agency in time for December deadline and avoiding the potential financial penalties that can range between £5,000 and £50,000. Plymotion at Your Workplace

20. Plymouth City Council’s Transport Smarter Choices has direct funding from the Department of Transport’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund to work with local employers to encourage the use of sustainable transport, i.e. walking, cycling, car sharing, and public transport. This can support an employer’s own health and wellbeing objectives and can help with site management and parking issues. As part of this it is able to offer an event called Plymotion at Your Workplace offering engaging and helpful drop-in sessions where your staff can talk to a travel advisor and receive advice about walking, cycling, bus, etc, tailored to their needs. Subject to resources, bike servicing can sometimes be arranged as part of the event. It is also able to give out small incentives to try out new ways of travelling such as day rider bus taster tickets and cycling-related merchandise. In return, it asks that your staff complete a short travel survey and that this survey is repeated again at a future agreed date. It has worked recently with UTC Aerospace plus others. All that is needed to run the event is a suitable space. A cafeteria or foyer usually works well but any space that is easy for staff to access can be used. You determine the date and time for the event and the Transport team will do the rest. Click here for further information or follow the link at the bottom of this newsletter to look at the Frequently Asked Questions. Hinkley C industrial construction project - 09:00 and 11:00 3rd June - Building a strong south west supply chain response - Blackbrook Business Park, Taunton, Somerset, TA1 2PX 30. As part of its procurement and supply chain strategy for Hinkley Point C, EDF Energy has been

working with the Hinkley Supply Chain Team (managed by Somerset Chamber of Commerce) since 2010 to identify and support local and regional businesses that want to become part of the supply chain. The Hinkley Supply Chain Team is the first point of contact for South West businesses wishing to engage in one of the largest civil engineering projects in Europe. Work to map the regional supply chain capability and provide early identification of relevant work package opportunities is gathering pace in recent months and as the project live date gets closer there is a need to ensure the suppliers with specific capabilities being sought in the South West are identified and their capability registered. To achieve this we know it will be important to work together with a selected number of business organisations in the South West that can help target suppliers with the required capabilities as these are identified. We would therefore like to invite you to a workshop where we will communicate the supplier engagement models developed and how we might best collaborate between our organisations. We believe that it would be beneficial for us collectively to ensure our member companies gain access to, and capitalise on, the opportunities that Hinkley Point C will undoubtedly offer. Currently we have over 2,500 companies registered on the Supply Chain covering a range of capabilities. Whilst the categories of registration range from soft services, to training, to structural steel erectors (amongst a plethora of other categories) we recognise the need to engage with specific capability and/or sector suppliers that may not have registered thus far. Please let me know if you are interested in meeting here at Equity House between 09:00 and 11:00 on the 3rd of June. Linda Middleton-Jones, Business Services Manager, Somerset Chamber of Commerce. had over sixty people book to attend this important event in the PMG calendar. The aim of this important PMG event will be to focus attention on a broad range of topics that collectively determine whether employees are engaged or not, giving both an insight into practices within member firms and bringing an external perspective from leaders in their field. The event will be chaired by Rhys Blackaller, Factory Group Manager, Marine Naval Bases, Marine & Technology division of Babcock International. Rhys is Chair of the PMG’s Skills & Engagement subgroup. The Heart of the South West LEP is looking to appoint two new Non-Executive Directors 39. The Heart of the South West LEP (which covers Devon, Plymouth,

Somerset and Torbay) has already proven itself to be a partnership that gets things done. By championing our priorities and putting forward a credible portfolio of investable projects the LEP has been successful at building the business case for approaching £500m of investment in the local economy. We are now seeking two new private sector NED – candidates must have a strong business background at the most senior / owner level, and possess the necessary level of experience and understanding of our Strategic Economic Plan agendas to be confident of making an immediate and positive contribution to the Board. Ideally one of the candidates appointed will be in a bigger business; the other a SME or social enterprise. The NEDs will be required to attend Board meetings once every two months and periodic meetings or events (across the LEP area) related to their areas of expertise to support LEP activity. The role is un-remunerated. To request a full briefing pack, please call Aaron Beider at REED on 0117 906 0009. Please note, the closing date for all applications is June 19th 2015.

Charity Challenge – Catherine is cycling 480 km across Zambia in around 5 days 40. Dear PMG Colleagues, I am the Olympus Ambassador for ‘Street Child

Africa’ which is one of the nominated charities we support as a Group. Street Child Africa supports young kids who, for unfortunate and tragic reasons, are forced to live on the streets in Africa. Some of these kids as young as 6, live dangerous and desperate lives with no adult to help with injuries, medicine or life support and unfortunately their vulnerability means they are subject to both physical and sexual abuse. This charity work close with local Business Partners within the areas and build trust with the street-connected children, providing help, medicine and education through regular out-reach sessions, in the attempt to integrate them back within the society. I have taken on a challenge to raise money for the charity and have agreed to cycle 480 km across Zambia in around 5 days......... tough, but do-able as long as I start training now! So the purpose of my contact is to appeal to you and your companies generosity and ask if you could donate and support me on this quest. I have set up a page on the website www.justgiving.com/Catherine-Harris16 and you can donate on line. I will be going through the local media to try and raise the awareness of the charity and the event, however in the meantime thank you for reading my appeal and I would be extremely grateful for any support you are able to offer. Kind regards, Catherine Harris, Managing Director, Algram Group Ltd. email - [email protected] [email protected]

Plymouth engineers take on Monte Carlo banger rally challenge

42. A team of engineers from Plymouth firm Applied Automation (UK) Ltd is hitting the road in a £300 banger and heading for the glitz and glamour of Monte Carlo. The four ‘more mature’ men have called themselves the Old Quadgers and signed up for the Monte Carlo or Bust rally. The annual challenge takes place in June with teams setting off from Belgium and nursing their ageing cars along mountain passes down to glamourous Monaco. Ian Jacob, Pete Bird, Mike Stevens and Nick Ransome all work for Plympton based Applied Automation and the company has picked up the bill for the charity event. The team is raising money for St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth on their www.justgiving.com/Theoldquaders page. Ian Jacob, Engineering Director, said: “Our aim is to show the youngsters a thing or two. We’ve never done anything like this before but we think it will be a lot of fun and hopefully we’ll raise some money for a really good cause. Fingers crossed the old Vauxhall we bought will make it all the way from Plymouth to the start line in Belgium and then down through Europe.” David Rowe, Applied Automation Managing Director said: “I’m pleased to support the team in their fundraising efforts and St Luke’s is a very worthy charity.” Corporate Fundraiser, Lorna Damella said: “We can’t thank Ian, Pete, Mike and Nick enough for choosing to raise money for St Luke’s on what will be an epic challenge and amazing life experience for all involved. It is great to see a local business supporting their employees to achieve something great for charity. The money raised will help us continue to provide care to patients and their families dealing with a terminal illness no matter where they are in our community. Thanks Team Old Quadgers and good luck!”

Request to Support a Creative Arts Project 43. ‘Hi I am currently an apprentice with a small media organisation in Plymouth called Fotonow. I have

been commissioned by Plymouth Museum to document and make a series of photographic portraits of apprentices across the city. The images will be stored in the city's archives with potential for them to be exhibited in the future. Any apprentices photographed will receive a digital copy of their image along with their employer. I was wondering if you would be able to pass this message along or put me in contact with a PMG member in Plymouth who would potentially be interested in supporting this project’. Kind regards Jake McPherson Creative Apprentice [email protected] mob: 07939 475 460.
