DESCRIPTION
Project Management (PMI) South Africa (SA) Newsletter 2nd Quarter 2015 IssueTRANSCRIPT
South Africa PMI Chapter Newsletter
From the President’s Desk
It seems every newsletter I have
something new and exciting to discuss, I
hope this trend keeps coming!
This month we see the resignation of
Wikus Engelbrecht from the role of VP
Volunteering. Wikus brought life back into
the volunteering with PMI, and has been
instrumental in developing and
maintaining PMI South Africa volunteering
systems. As much as we will miss him in
the role we are also pleased that he will
continue to be involved with our Chapter
and will continue his recruiting at meetings
and everyday interactions – Wikus’s
enthusiasm is very catchy!
With every cloud is a silver lining, and we
welcome Suneel Barra as our new VP
Volunteering (Elect). Keeping succession
planning in mind Wikus has groomed
Suneel and we look forward to voting him
in formally at this years’ AGM.

To all our Gauteng Branch Members
I hope you guys are enjoying our
newsletter. It is still early days so please
let us know if there are any suggestions for
improvement, it is actually your newsletter
and you must enjoy what you get.
I have been fortunate to recently attend
the EMEA LIM in London and came back
fired up with new ideas for our branch and
I plan to launch new and different events.
Having said that we would need a lot of
hands on deck to arrange and bring these
ideas to life and that is why I am asking
anyone that is interested in arrange new
and exciting events to please contact
myself or our Volunteer Lead – Suneel and
we will get you started. (Also see the
article regarding the benefits of
volunteering.)
The Launch of the Pretoria Branch in
Gauteng has been very successful thanks
to Karen van Deventer and all her hard
work. If you have not attended an event in
Pretoria yet do not miss the next one.

Suneel has much in common with Wikus, as he is also
extremely enthusiastic and always has an ear (and
shoulder) for any volunteer. A wonderful people person
I am excited to be working closely with him in future.
For any volunteering queries or to become more
involved with chapter (and be swept up in this amazing
industry) please contact Suneel at
KZN Branch is back on track! With Molly Govender
heading up the branch and directing it, I have no doubt
that KZN is in for some branch developments not to be
missed! More details regarding their launch follow in
the events scheduled section of the newsletter. Do
please attend if you are in town, and show your
support. If you are interested in helping Molly and
joining her team please contact her at
[email protected] or Suneel at
We have had some ups and downs with our website
over the past month (and behind the scenes it’s been
going on for a long time). We have finally renovated the
site and moved, and would love to develop it further to
meet our member’s needs. We have advertised for a
volunteer position specifically to look at this, and focus
on our internet presence. If this appeals to you and you
would like to get involved – or know of someone who
would like to help us out please see the
requirements/preferences in the volunteer section of
the newsletter and join our team.
As always, if volunteering is not for you or you do not
have the time – simply attend your local branch
meetings and show your support for the volunteering
team (and earn your PDU’s at the same time). The
branches are also need your feedback – perhaps you
know of a speaker or topic you feel should be discussed
at your next meeting? Send them our way!
All the best,
Dominique Mulholland, PMI SA Chapter President Elect

News from the Cape Town Branch
We had our third event since the branch
inception in November last year and our core
group is growing slowly but surely with every
event that goes by. In the past few weeks,
several people outside of the core group
indicated they are willing to dedicate some of
their time in order to help out. Slowly, all the
pieces are falling into place as we are busy
putting some structure in place. For the time
being, our main focus is around finalizing the
events roster for the year. We have already
made some good progress on this as we have
some venues and speakers lined up already. All
This should be enough to get us decent PMI
exposure in Western Cape and also, critical
mass of people that will attend future events in
order to carry the branch forward.
Our next event is scheduled for 18 June and is
bound to be rather interesting. We are looking
forward to this talk that will be given by Lorne
Sulcas, former game ranger-guide and
internationally published wildlife photographer.
Lorne has two decades of African bush
experience as a game ranger-guide and
internationally published wildlife photographer.
In his Thriving in a Wild World presentation, he
will speak on the powerful success and
business lessons from Africa’s Big Cats, around
winning, sustainable growth, teamwork and
leadership in the face of change and
competition.

News from Port Elizabeth Branch
The PMI SA PE Branch consists of a very small
group and is still very much in the early
formative stages. There are two volunteers
whose sole focus is to grow the member base
by creating awareness throughout the PE
region.
A big challenge facing the PE branch is that this
initiative has been on & off within the region
and those who had the interest either no
longer have the interest or have somewhat
been de-motivated and thus pulling others in
the same way, therefore as the volunteers of
PE branch, we have a huge task on our hands
to ignite and boost the interest to get a lot of
participation going in the branch meetings.
What we have tried to do differently in the
meetings held this year is to have meetings
that are more interactive and steer away from
a theoretical approach.
Volunteering Vacancies
For now, there isn’t a real need to expand the
volunteer base, as the administration functions
are still quite at a minimum due to the
attendance numbers being very low.
Although in future we will be revisiting this, as
the demands and functions grow.
Special Event
Initially planned for later in the year, but at the
rate of attendance experienced, may lead to
having one in the new year.

Volunteer Opportunity: Website Administrator
The Communications Portfolio Requires a Website Administrator. A volunteer for this position
does not require any coding or technical skills, but rather an eye for web design and 24/7 internet
connectivity. Internet connectivity is essential, do not apply if this is not available to you.
You can be based anywhere in RSA.
You will mainly be responsible for content management, the content will be sent to you from the
Branches and you will in turn update the website. In particular new events for the calendar,
photos from events, news items and banners/logos. The website is through Afrihost.
You will not be required to attend branch meetings so transport and such is not a concern. This
position also allows the volunteer the ability to think out-the-box and improvements,
opportunities and advancements are encouraged! The reporting line would be Richard Smith, VP
Communications.
It will help if the volunteer has some (but not all) of the following experience:
• PR/Marketing expertise/experience,
• Copywriting/Editing,
• Basic Graphic Design i.e. to edit images - resize correctly, create banners e.t.c. - mid level
design experience to create good quality graphic content is an advantage,
• Website design and content management,
• Time availability to do updates ad hoc on any day of the week – this is flexible, but as
maximum of a 24 hour turn around will be required.
Please send your bio and any questions you may have to [email protected] and/or

Tekle Baraki Recognised In Cape Town
As you know branches cannot function without
the support and organisation of the volunteers.
Every now and then we would like to highlight
a volunteer who has really made a difference,
and in this case it is Tekle Baraki from Cape
Town Branch.
At the beginning of the year we had a crisis as
Erik had to rush overseas for personal reasons,
which is very understandable. We however
found ourselves without a venue and the
reason the event still went ahead was due to
Tekle. At a very short notice (in a matter of
hours), Tekle offered us the use of his
company's venue (ACG Architects,
http://www.acgarchitects.co.za/).
Further to that, Tekle negotiated with his
company that we can use this venue for our
future events - free of charge; Although this
venue has capacity for a maximum of 20
people, we can always add in more chairs (if
needed) but most importantly, we know that
we have the venue secured – which is essential
for the continuation of the branch. Further to
that, Tekle arranged with his company that
they would also include refreshments with the
venue (water, coffee, tea) and biscuits - again,
free of charge.
Even more importantly, Tekle recently received
the 1st prize from the PMSA (awarded each
year), for his MSc dissertation in Project
Management (programme at UCT). Tekle's
dissertation, in the opinion of a select
committee of PMSA Western Cape, is highly
relevant to the project management
profession. The award includes an invitation to
an event hosted by PMSA (WC) at which the
recipient will be given the opportunity to
present the findings of his/her research to
leading stakeholders in the industry to which it
applies. The decision of the award was based
on an assessment from a pool of 3
dissertations submitted for consideration by
UCT.
As the branch grows we may require use of a
larger venue – if your company would like to
offer their venue every second month, please
contact [email protected] or

Launched! 2015 Pulse of the Profession®
We are pleased to announce the release of the 2015 Pulse of the Profession®:Capturing the Value
of Project Management. The report focuses on how organizations would benefit by returning to
the basics of project, program and portfolio management. It shows how the fundamental aspects
of developing a culture of project management, cultivating talent, and defining processes, enable
organizations to capture value and gain competitive advantage.
The report is now on the home pages of PMI.org and ProjectManagement.com. Please direct to
PMI.org/Pulse to access the report.
Key Findings
What helps an organization build and sustain its growth capacity and become a high performer?
Our 2015 Pulse research shows a number of factors contribute to this success, including a focus
on what we consider the basics:
• Fully understanding the value of project management
• Having actively engaged executive sponsors
• Aligning projects to strategy
• Developing and maintaining project management talent
• Establishing a well-aligned and effective PMO (project management office)
• Using standardized project management practices throughout the organization
The 2015 Pulse findings detail and demonstrate a clear path forward through a focus on the
following fundamentals:
• Culture: High-performing organizations fully understand the value of project management and
are creating a project management mindset.
• Talent: High-performing organizations are significantly more likely to focus on talent
management, establishing ongoing training, and formal, effective knowledge transfer. This is
especially important in project management, where technical skills are enhanced by the
leadership and strategic and business management capabilities that are nurtured through
experience.
• Process: High-performing organizations support project, program, and portfolio management
though standardized practices and by aligning projects and programs to the organization’s
strategy.
Throughout this report, you’ll discover what high-performing organizations do differently—and
how they are creating competitive advantage by embedding a project management mindset in
their organization’s culture.

Volunteer Opportunity: Marketing Assistant
Administration Portfolio requires a Marketing
Assistant. This position as Marketing Assistant
requires internet and phone access. If you have
interest in moving into a Marketing position
this role would be a good stepping stone and
introduction to PMI South Africa Chapter. Your
attendance at branch events is encouraged,
but not essential. Marketing
experience/background is preferred, but your
self-motivation and enthusiasm is more
important.
This position would initially be reviewing
advertising avenues for PMI on a national level.
Publications, internet websites and the like –
how much are the advertising options, is there
opportunity for mutual benefit between
ourselves and the publication and do they
reach our target market. Thus initially much
research is required and if you do not have any
background in this area you will certainly
develop it on completion of the initial review.
You will report to the President.
