Compressed air represents a secondary source ofpow er th at is clean and easy to h andle. A ll typesof O rtling h aus clutch es and b rak es th erefore areoffered w ith pneumatic actuation.In many production sh ops a pow erfulcompressed air netw ork is already present,compressed air is “ clean“ and th ere is no dang erof fire in th e case of leak s. It is simple totransport and to control and permits in additionrapid and precise operating times ev en at h ig hoperating freq uencies. F urth ermore th e amountof maintenance req uired for b oth th e compressed air supply system and for th epneumatic clutch es and b rak es is small.

Single-plate clutch/brake combined unitsfor dry-running

1 Series 0406 and 0420

These pneumatically actuated clutch/brakecombined units have been designed to meet theever increasing performance and safetyrequirements in presses. The series 0406 offersthe optimum in terms of maximum clutch andbrake torques with the smallest of dimensions,i.e. high performance compact design. Thehighly successful forerunner to the 0406 series,the 0400 is still available today for replacementrequirements; in the case of new designs,however, the 0406 and 0420 series should beused. These combined units represent theoptimum drive component in stamping andforming presses and offer excellent adaptabilityin the following areas:- 12-point suspension of the friction plates or

two-point suspension with lugs of the same or different lengths, giving flexibility fordifferent applications.

- Friction element selection, based on shape andmaterial, to obtain the most effective servicelife with quiet operation under all conditions.The friction block version is to berecommended for machines with either highdynamic loading or load reversals undercontinuous operation.

- Securing to the shaft or crankshaft can be with the aid ofeither keys or locking assemblies, these being fittedon the clutch side with series0-420 and on the brake sidewith series 0-406.

2 Series 0424

This series offers both the advantages of oilcooled wet-running plates, as with series 0023and 0123, together with, pneumatic actuation.Pneumatic actuation can be of advantage whenhydraulic oil is not available or economicallydoes not appear advisable .K ey connection or locking assemblies forsecuring the clutch/brake to the shaft areavailable.F riction combination: Steel/sinter liningA ir and cooling oil intake: V ia rotary inletthrough the shaft.A pplication: In stamping, embossing and deepdrawing presses and similar machines.

The units are offered with various housings suchas foot mounted and shafts or with hollow shaftsand securing flanges.A significant increase in the engagingperformance can be achieved using an externallymounted electric fan and by circulating oilthrough the housing.Friction combination: Steel/sinter liningAir intake: Connection on the housing.Application: Where high switching frequencyand excellent, repeatable stopping is required as,for example, with packing, metering and cuttingmachines, i.e. everywhere where rapid andprecise movements or feeds are required.

Clutches and brakes with internallyair-cooled friction plates for dry-running

4/5 Series 0442 and 0452

These pneumatically engaged, spring-releasedclutches with up to three plates andpneumatically released, spring-applied brakeswith up to two plates utilise identicalcomponents. The plates of the single andtwo-plate versions are internally air-cooled whichallows excellent heat dissipation and thereforehigh operation speeds.The three-plate version of the clutch isrecommended for applications where thetransmission of high torque is required, however,

it is not possible to use the three plate version asa brake.The brakes can be matched precisely to theparticular application by correct selection of thesprings. E xternal cooling increases the thermalcapacity of the brake considerably.For particular applications where there is highdynamic work or alternating torques as with deepdrawing presses, the clutch and brake can befitted with friction blocks instead of linings.The extremely small moments of inertia of thehub and inner plate combined with the small airvolume of the actuating cylinder, enable highengagement rates and short switching times to beachieved.As a rule not only the clutch but also the brake ismounted on the shaft end.Friction combination: Cast iron/organic fric-tion lining or cast iron/friction block of organicfriction material.Air intake: Via a rotary inlet with the clutchand on the fixed cylinder of the brake.Application: These clutches and brakes are for“heavy duty work“ in general mechanicalengineering. In particular, hot forging presses,cold forming machines or shears in rollingoperations. They can be used, not onlyindividually, but also as a pair when singlecycling is required. The brakes are approved bythe relevant G erman E mployer’s L iability

Insurance Association, asauxiliary brakes in pressdrives where they cansupplement single-plateclutch/brake combinedunits when an appropriatemonitoring function isprovided.

Multi-plate clutches for dry- orwet-running

6 Series 0421 and 0-409

Based on well known design principles, thathave proved themselves in applications overmany years, these clutches are to be found in usewhere compressed air is the preferred source ofpower, for reasons of cleanliness or rapidengagement times.The 0421 is designed for dry-running only, theseries 0409 however can be fitted with sinter pla-tes for dry- or wet-running.Friction combination: Steel/organic frictionlining with 0421; steel/sintered lining forwet- or dry-running with 0409Air intake: Via rotary inlet through the shaft.Application: Primarily in vehicle auxiliary dri-ves and in printing machines.

Multi-plate clutches with non-rotatingactuation unit for dry-running

7 Series 0521

These clutches are comparable in terms of theirperformance with those of series 0-421. Howeverthey offer, in addition, the advantage of astationary cylinder, as a result air intake holes inthe shaft and separate rotary inlets are notrequired.Friction combination: Steel/organic frictionlining.Air intake: On nonrotating cylinder.Application: Primarilyin cases where a freeshaft end is not availableas, for example, in thecase of vehicle auxiliarydrives and printingmachines.

Spring-applied multi-plate brakes fordry-running

8/9 Series 0422-..0/-..9/-..1

These spring-applied fail safe brakes have thesame form of construction as the hydraulicallyreleased brakes of series 0022, the differencebeing that they are released with compressed airwhich is fed into the stationary cylinder. Preciseoperation and tough construction of thesteel/organic lining friction combinationcharacterise these brakes. There are versions withor without a centering function and in additionan emergency release facility can be fitted toenable the brake to be released should thecompressed air supply fail.Friction combination: Steel/organic frictionliningAir intake: At the stationary cylinderApplication: With pneumatic drives in generalmechanical engineering or for safetyapplications, for example with mining machines.

10 Series 0415

A spring-applied fail safe brake with the frictioncombination steel/special sinter for dry-running,which can be used for both holding and dynamicapplications.Special characteristics are:Maintenance free operation together with thefollowing options:• Monitoring of the brake position by means of

microswitches.• Emergency release by means of manual lever or

intergrated screws.• Mounting of an operating valve directly onto

the brake.Friction combination: Steel/special sinter fordry-runningAir intake: On the housing of the brakeApplication: On electric motors and the shaftends of machines and gearboxes.

Tooth clutches for dry- or wet-running

11/12 Series 0412-00./-01.

These clutches are recommended where hightorques are to be transmitted, without slipping,in a confined space. Care must be taken thatengagement is carried out when the shafts arestationary or when the difference in their speed

is only small (maximum 50 min-1).The clutches are free of residual torque whendisengaged.A choice can be made between clutches whichare pneumatically applied (series 0-412-00.) orspring-applied, pneumatically released, (series 0412-01.).In addition to the „ normal tooth“ version inwhich the plates can mesh at any point, there isalso a tooth design available which can onlymesh at one point on the circumference so thatthe shafts are always at the same positionrelative to one another when the clutch isengaged.Air intake: Via rotary inlet through the shaftApplication: Auxiliary drives of highperformance automatic printing machines.
