CROSS-MEDIA CASE STUDY

Singer, songwriter. Born Alecia Beth Moore on September 8, 1979, in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. Pink, as she's otherwise known, gets her name from the movie Reservoir Dogs, a film she saw as a teenager and whose character Mr. Pink is someone her friends all agreed she resembled.

Pink was the second child born to Jim and Judy Moore. She experienced a largely typical middle-class life in a suburb of Doylestown, Philadelphia. Her parents' tense relationship, however, caused the couple to divorce when Pink was 3. Their split and the subsequent demise of the marriage sparked, in part, a rebellious attitude from Pink. "I was never allowed to go over to any of my friends' houses when I was little, because I was a bad influence," she said of her early life. "None of their parents liked me and my own parents were scared to death of me— and for me."

BACKGROUNG/EARL YEARS

In 2001, Pink was a part of “lady Marmalade” alongside singers Christina Aguilera, Mva and rapper Lil’ Kim for the soundtrack of the film Moulin Rouge!. Produced by hip-hop producers Rock wilder and Missy Elliot, the song topped the charts in countries including New Zealand, the UK, Australia and the U.S., where it became the most successful airplay-only single in history, and also became Pink's first #1 single

The success of the single was helped by its music video, which was popular on music channels and won the MTV Music Video Award for Video of the year. The song won Pink's first Grammy Award for Best pop Collaboration with Vocals, and provided a boost for the four performers' careers.

Its lead single, “Get the party started” , went top five in the U.S. and many other countries, and #1 in Australia. At the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards, the music video won in the categories of Best Female Video and Best Dance Video. The album's other singles “Don't Let Me Get me” the Dallas Austin-produced "Just Like a Pill”, and "Family Portrait” were also radio and chart successes, with "Just Like a Pill" becoming Pink's first solo UK number-one hit. The singles were substantial hits on Adult Top 40 radio. "Missundaztood" was certified gold or platinum status in more than 20 countries. It was the second best-selling album in the UK during 2002. "Missundaztood" and "Get the Party Started" earned nominations at the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, respectively.

ALBUM ARTWORK

There is an image of Pink and a singer that is very well known for his single “we are young” . The picture shadows pink and Nate. This shows that Pink wants this album to be more about the music than her or Nate. This album unlike her other albums wants the audience to be connected to her music rather than her as an artist. This is also related to what Pink said in her interview. She said she hates making music videos because they remove the audience interpretation of the song and force feed something else to them. This album is about her audience connecting with her music and not her.

MUSIC VIDEO- JUST GIVE ME A REASON

Produced by: Jeff Bhasker released 2013

Page 12: P!nk coss media case study

The music video is done in a narrative manner. There are a lot of close up and wide angle shots of there characters (Pink, Nate and Carey) and this tells the audience that the song is about love and letting love go. The video shows love as fantasy because of the bed in the middle of Smokey water and a big stuffed bear with glowing eyes. However, it could be argued that the music video is not completely narrative but tells the audience the meaning of the song through the visuals. This is relative to Pink as an individual because she doesn't like making music videos. According to her she doesn’t like taking away her fans interpretation of her song by forcing visuals on them.

GOODWIN ANALYSIS

Close up shot of the singer.

Music and visuals connected through editing. The pace of the music is the same pace as the visuals and it was shown through the slow camera movement.

The concept of looking, the audience can see Nate through the TV and the sees Pink looking at Nate through the TV. The audience is in the position of Pink looking at Nate.

Lyric and visuals going together; “you’ve been havin’ real bad dreams” the scene goes with the lyrics because it doesn’t look very real, it looks like more of a dream.

CONCLUSION

This music video is very different from Pinks other videos, album and her website. This video is darker and duller and not as bubbly as Pink is portrayed on her website. The fact the pink is seen in colour and Nate Ruess is shadowed shows that the album is sold mainly on pink than Ruess.

The picture in the album cover is more soulful compared to pink’s typical pictures on her other album covers. This shows that for this particular album pink is not interested in fame or how her fans see her as an artist but how her fans see her music produced by her as an artist.
