mission

The mission of the Kripalu School of Ayurveda (KSA) is to prepare students for professional certification as Ayurvedic Consultants and Ayurvedic Yoga Specialists through experiential training programs that combine professional, academic study with personal experience and exploration.

goals

• To provide students with a strong foundation in Ayurvedic principles and practices • To prepare students for a professional career in Ayurveda

two levels of certification

ayurvedic consultant For health-care practitioners and those interested in helping others achieve optimal health and vitality. Certification qualifies you to provide lifestyle consultations that focus on optimizing physical, mental and spiritual health. In-depth studies include Vedic philosophy, Ayurvedic anatomy, physiology, and psychology, herbology, constitutional evaluation, clinical training, and Sanskrit. This 700-hour program is comprised of 18 sessions over two years, plus a clinical intensive. Upon successful completion students will be certified through KSA as Ayurvedic Consultants. ayurvedic yoga specialist For yoga teachers seeking knowledge of Ayurveda to enhance their personal practice and instruction. This training will focus on the basic principles of Ayurveda and how they relate to yoga. Upon completion you will be able to integrate Ayurveda into your yoga classes, giving your students a deeper understanding of their body type, as well as how the basic concepts of Ayurveda relate to everyday life. This certification is comprised of the first seven sessions of the Consultant training. Upon successful completion students will be certified through the KSA as Ayurvedic Yoga Specialists.

program structure

Training takes place through 3-day weekend sessions (Thursday evening through Sunday morning), with each weekend comprising approximately 25 hours of class instruction. Each weekend a member of the faculty will present theory and techniques for all aspects of Ayurvedic healing.

written assignments

Students are required to complete extensive homework assignments between training segments and hand them in for review. The assignments are designed to reinforce the material learned during class time and allow students to apply knowledge of Ayurvedic principles to a wide variety of situations and practices. Successful and timely completion of homework is an integral component of the learning process and certification. Homework for the two levels of certification may be different. Yoga teachers completing certification at both levels will need to complete both assignments. There will be 20 to 40 hours of homework between each session.

curriculum

Ayurvedic Lifestyle Training Practical Ayurvedic principles, including daily routines, seasonal routines, disease prevention, and yoga for everyday health, including lectures on nutrition for balancing the doshas; the practical instruction helps support each student’s personal experience with Ayurveda.

Sanskrit Training in the Sanskrit language, including the alphabet, rules, grammar, and use of Sanskrit dictionaries; includes one weekend intensive in the basics of Sanskrit and additional training specific to its use in Ayurveda in subsequent sessions.

Ayurvedic Anatomy and Physiology Part I: The biological humors or doshas, including their qualities, actions, and sites; the 20 attributes, subdoshas, seven tissues, seven nutritive membranes, and the malas. Part II: Agni and its 13 forms, ama, the srotas and organs, and an introduction to the concepts of etiology and pathology.

Ayurvedic Psychology The biological humors; the three gunas—prana, tejas, and ojas—as they relate to the mind; introduction to spiritual therapies: meditation, mantra, gems, color therapy, aromatherapy, and Jyotish astrology.

Yoga and Ayurveda The different body types and how they relate to asana and pranayama practice; the proper or optimal practice for each type or combination of types and how to use yoga to balance the doshas.

Etiology and Pathology of Disease Part I: Etiology, digestion, assimilation, and elimination and the disease process. Part II: Methods of examination and diagnosis; the disease process in the seven constitutional types; how integral digestion, assimilation, and elimination are to proper functioning of the body; methods of examination to determine disease processes; and how to develop an understanding of all these factors to form a diagnosis.

Digestion and Nutrition The six tastes and the specific action of each; the potent energy of food and its post-digestive effects; how the six tastes relate to the doshas; dietary guidelines for both constitutional and seasonal balance; how to use diet for healing; and how Ayurvedic cooking contributes to optimal health.

Ayurvedic Therapies The seven methods of palliation, including snehana and sudation; overview of the five purifications called panchakarma, as well as tonification, marma therapy, and Ayurvedic massage.

Clinical Three-session series: how Ayurvedic consultants conduct examinations, make assessments, recommend therapies, and manage different doshic disorders; a unique opportunity to discover how consultants differ in approach, offering students ideas on creating their own style.

Ethics and Business Management The ethics of the Ayurvedic profession along with opportunities for advancing one’s knowledge in this field; ways in which to share information about setting up a successful business and an exploration of what support networks already exist; includes legislation and its possible effects on the ability to practice, and how to get involved in community issues.

Clinical Intensive At some point during your 2-year training program, you will be required to come and provide assistance and support to the participants of panchakarma. Panchakarma is a 5-day cleansing and rejuvenation program utilizing Ayurvedic massage techniques, eating practices, education, and lifestyle support. It is not intended to be a training in Ayurvedic massage techniques. However, it does provide an opportunity to observe consultations and educational sessions, learn about the procedures, and participate in client experience on a very personal level. There will be an additional fee for this program.

certification policies

Attendance Attendance is required at all scheduled weekends and at each session within the weekend. Students will be asked to check in at the beginning of each session. Attendance will be a factor in determining the final grade. Should an emergency arise that would necessitate missing a weekend, the KSA Dean will determine how the material can be made up. Ayurvedic Yoga Specialist candidates are allowed to miss at most one session of the seven months; attendance at the 7th session is mandatory for certification at this level. Ayurvedic Consultant candidates are allowed to miss at most two sessions of the 18 months. Makeup procedures will be followed. If the Sanskrit intensive is missed, another Sanskrit training (at least 20 hours) will be required at additional cost. At least one of the herbology weekends and all of the clinical weekends must be attended. Mastery of the missed material is required for certification.

Grading Demonstrating mastery of the material covered in the program through successful completion of written and practical exams and submission of homework assignments is mandatory and will be used to evaluate student progress and the ability to retain and integrate course material. Homework must be handed in at the beginning of each session. Attendance will also be considered when determining final grade.

student conduct Students are required to conduct themselves in a professional manner during all components of this training. They are also required to adhere to the Kripalu Code of Ethics, the Responsibility Agreement, and the Certification Agreement. If a complaint is made against a student in the training program, the KSA Dean will conduct an investigation as appropriate.

admissions

KSA is committed to maintaining the experiential depth and high standards of professionalism that distinguish all Kripalu programs. KSA does not discriminate on the basis of age, race, disability, gender, marital or family status, nationality, religion, or sexual preference. In determining an applicant’s suitability to be trained as a helping professional, the Admissions Committee considers all factors necessary to safeguard the well-being of the public, other students, and the KSA staff. If an applicant feels that his or her application has been wrongly denied, the issue can be raised with the Director of Professional Training, whose decision shall be final.

application process

Upon receipt of an application and an interview with the KSA Dean, either by phone or in person, the Admissions Committee will make a decision about a candidate’s acceptance. We will then notify you as to your acceptance.

The anatomy and physiology requirement does not apply to the Ayurvedic Yoga Specialist program. Certification as an Ayurvedic Yoga Specialist requires completion of a 200-hour yoga teacher training in advance of the program.

student complaint procedure

From time to time differences in interpretation of school policies may arise among students, faculty, and/or the administration. Both Kripalu Center and KSA put a premium on conscious communication and urge both students and staff to communicate any problems that arise directly to the individual(s) involved. If the problem cannot be resolved in this manner, the KSA Dean should be contacted. Normally, these informal procedures will lead to a resolution of differences. If the complaint cannot be resolved in this way, the student may contact the Director of Professional Trainings. If the matter remains unresolved, students may contact the Massachusetts Department of Education, Office of Proprietary Schools, 350 Main St, Malden MA 02148-5023 or [email protected].

frequently asked questions

1. Is this a training in Panchakarma and Ayurvedic massage? No. Panchakarma is a series of cleansing practices that restore proper functioning to the body. Because these practices have become widely known in this country as Ayurvedic health services, many people might associate them with training in Ayurveda. In most states, in order to offer Ayurvedic body treatments, you must be a licensed massage therapist. Kripalu does offer training in performing some of the “purva karma” massage techniques, which are part of a full panchakarma program, and Kripalu offers certification in massage that can lead to licensing. For more information about the Kripalu School of Massage, contact the Professional Training office at 800-848-8702 or [email protected].

2. How much time will I need to study at home? You will need to complete approximately 20 to 40 hours of homework between each training weekend. Completion of the homework is essential to the completion of and certification for the program.

3. Will I have an opportunity to participate in activities at Kripalu Center during the training weekends? Due to the intensive nature of this program, it may be difficult to participate in other Kripalu evening events or receive healing arts services. Healing arts sessions may be scheduled on Thursday or Sunday afternoons, before or after the program schedule. Scheduling healing arts in advance will insure that you have the opportunity to receive the service of your choice. Yoga classes will be offered as part of the school curriculum.

4. Will there be a graduation that my family and friends can attend? Yes. There will be a graduation ceremony and celebration for graduates, friends, and family members.

5. What if I get sick or need to withdraw from the program? If illness or other serious circumstances prevent a student from continuing the program, the student may apply for a leave of absence. A leave of absence does not officially begin until the school has been notified in writing. Students taking a leave of absence will be eligible to reenter the training in the next class, provided they have completed at least the first seven months. After that, resumption of study will be at certain program intervals, as determined by the KSA Dean. To resume the program, a student must notify KSA of his or her intention to resume before the beginning of the next session, subject to space, and be in good academic and financial standing. It may be necessary for a student to retake previously completed classes. Tuition will be refunded in accordance with the cancellation policy.

6. What happens after I get certified? Ayurvedic Consultants will find the most success by starting their own practices. Some graduates may be hired by other practitioners or by health-care facilities. Other opportunities for employment include teaching public education classes on Ayurveda and conducting workshops and seminars. Ayurvedic Consultants who are licensed health-care providers may use their Ayurvedic training to enhance their current health care practices. The school will endeavor to support its graduates by communicating job opportunities and referring requests received from the public. KSA does not offer formal placement services and makes no guarantee of employment.

7. Still have questions? For more information about KSA, call 800-848-8702 or e-mail [email protected].

certification criteria

Please take the time to carefully read this document before signing the application. This program is intended to result in your certification as an Ayurvedic Consultant or Ayurvedic Yoga Specialist. Practitioners of Ayurveda must possess the skills and abilities necessary to safely and competently convey the teachings of Ayurveda to their clients or students. The majority of Kripalu School of Ayurveda (KSA) students complete this program and become certified. However, we reserve the right to withhold certification from any student who fails to develop the necessary skills. Every attempt will be made to provide input throughout the program with regard to learning deficits that could impede certification. Faculty and staff will use the following criteria to establish student eligibility for certification:

attendance

If you need to miss any session you must speak to the dean of the school prior to the weekend. Students are responsible for any course material missed. Attendance includes punctuality in arriving at each class session and returning from breaks. Chronic tardiness is not acceptable and is disrespectful to the teacher and your fellow students.

exams

Throughout this course, students will be required to complete both practical and written exams designed to ascertain where more study might be needed or additional support required.

home study

Students are required to complete extensive at-home study in order to fully master the material delivered in the weekend sessions. All students must satisfactorily complete and submit all assignments to receive certification.

personal hygiene

Classroom attire should be modest, neat, and clean. You are asked to practice good personal hygiene in keeping with a professional appearance.

professional behavior and ethical conduct

All students are required to adhere to the Code of Ethics, which is designed to help create safety while maintaining a professional atmosphere. Failure to adhere could result in being asked to leave the program.

After certification, KSA graduates are expected to conduct their professional practice in full compliance with the Code of Ethics. Any complaint about unethical behavior will result in a thorough investigation. Graduates who are found to have violated the Code of Ethics may have their certification revoked.

course fee

All program and administrative fees must be paid in full prior to receiving certification. Certification will be withheld until all payments have been fully received by Kripalu Center. Students may, however, request a letter of completion indicating that certification will be forthcoming when all financial requirements are met.

I am responsible for my experience at Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health. I understand that the Kripalu School of Ayurveda (KSA) is a residential immersion program and is demanding on every level. I understand that the study and practices of Ayurveda are designed to integrate unresolved physical and psychological issues. I understand the practice of yoga often produces non-ordinary states of awareness. Kripalu Center, the program instructors, and the staff cannot possibly know every student’s personal needs. (Hereafter, Kripalu Center, the program instructors and staff, and the program curriculum will be referred to collectively as "Kripalu Center"). In addition, I understand the curriculum has been designed to create the optimal Ayurvedic education for the majority of students and each specific experience may have content that does not work for me. During this program, I am responsible for monitoring what is safe to me, and I can stop my participation in any experience at any time. Although my attendance is required in each session for me to become certified as an Ayurvedic Consultant or Ayurvedic Yoga Specialist, my participation is never required if I feel unsafe in any way. It is my responsibility to speak up or take myself out of an experience if I feel unsafe. I do not expect Kripalu Center to take care of my needs. I do not, and will not, hold Kripalu Center responsible for my physical and psychological well-being. Kripalu Center will not pay for, or reimburse me for, physical or psychological care during or after this program. I understand that during this demanding educational program, I will be challenged physically and psychologically and encouraged to take personal risks. I acknowledge that only I can know what my boundaries and limits are, and it is up to me to uphold these boundaries for myself. I understand that practicing Ayurveda and yoga is often about exploring new boundaries and limitations and that Kripalu Center is not responsible for any physical and psychological risk I choose to take in my education, exploration, and inquiry. I understand that the study of Ayurveda involves exploring and discussing different belief systems. These belief systems may be different from my own. I understand that Kripalu Center is not requiring me to change my beliefs in any way. I understand that any beliefs presented are not necessarily the view of Kripalu Center.

I understand that Kripalu Center offers the following suggestions to support my physical and psychological well-being. sharing Time is provided in almost every session to share relevant thoughts, questions, feelings, and insights. Please realize there may be time limitations set by the session leader out of respect for the overall process. co-listening and conscious communication You will be trained in processes that provide for closer bonding, non-judgmental listening, developing rapport with other students, and self-sufficiency in creating support for one’s process of integration. Some opportunities for practicing these techniques are built into the curriculum. Students are encouraged to work with these methods in interactions with fellow students and staff. staff Instructors and assistants are available outside of class for one-on-one meetings. sadhana The regular practice of yoga asana and the philosophical principles of yoga are designed to stimulate profound growth on every level. These experiences and the ability to integrate them are the foundation for Ayurvedic education. healing arts The Kripalu Healing Arts Department offers a wide selection of therapeutic modalities that may support the personal integration process. Sessions may be scheduled during free time for a fee. support systems Maintain contact with loved ones and health-care providers during this program. Do not change or discontinue any prescribed medication without your physician's consent. Please ask at the Front Desk for the Berkshire Resources Binder, which contains information about local 12-step meetings as well as restaurants and other places of interest. I have read this document in its entirety, understand it, and agree to honor it. I also understand that by signing the application I am entering into a legal contract that incorporates all aspects of this agreement.

It is essential that every Ayurvedic Consultant and Yoga Specialist has a high level of personal integrity and maintains clear boundaries when serving students or clients. As professionals we must remain ever aware that clients hold us in a position of power. Some may idealize us, projecting more wisdom or attainment upon us than truly exists. As a result, it is incumbent upon us to refrain from exploiting clients for personal gain or gratification. In addition to cultivating an awareness of the power dynamic, we expect Kripalu School of Ayurveda (KSA) students and graduates to uphold an environment in which inner focus can be cultivated. In practical terms, we ask our graduates to refrain from sexual and/or romantic involvement with clients. Our intention is not to be punitive or repressive, but to foster safety for the practice of yoga and Ayurveda. Because we do recognize that attractions develop and could evolve into a healthy, conscious relationship, we ask our graduates to seek direction in these matters. We are committed to fostering integrity, consciousness, and self-responsibility in relationship with students, clients, and each other. As an Ayurvedic Consultant or Yoga Specialist representing Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health, I agree to the following Code of Ethics:

I agree to hold myself as a steward of safe and sacred space by maintaining clear personal and professional boundaries. I will maintain awareness of my position of power and influence in relationship to clients, being especially attentive to my own agendas, perceptions, and expectations. I will not seek to fulfill my needs (for money, sex, power, love, truth, insight, or oneness) at clients’ expense.

I agree that my purpose as an Ayurvedic Consultant or Yoga Specialist is to serve clients on their paths of personal healing. I agree to avoid any activity or influence that is in conflict with the best interests of a client or that is solely for my own personal gain or gratification.

I agree that any sexual or romantic relationship is potentially distracting and possibly even harmful for clients who have come to do healing work. I will not invite, act on, respond to, or allow sexual or romantic contact with a client during the time that person in my care, even if the individual initiates such contact.

If a romantic attraction to a client does develop, I agree to immediately seek support and clarity from the Director of Professional Trainings. I understand that the purpose of this agreement is to protect the environment of sanctuary for the clients and to support the clarity, consciousness, and self-responsibility of individuals.

I agree to represent my qualifications honestly and provide only the services I am qualified and certified by Kripalu to perform.

I agree and understand that all actions that breach the principles of this code will be fairly investigated and that if warranted, my certification as an Ayurvedic Consultant or Yoga Specialist may be revoked or restricted. I have read this document in its entirety, understand it, and agree to honor it. I also understand that by signing the Kripalu School of Ayurveda application I am entering into a legal contract that incorporates all aspects of this agreement.
