4 South Holland Business AssociationAUGUST 2017

There are a lot of ways to show people that you appreciate them. You can send them a card or some

flowers, give them a plaque, or purchase a gift. The South Holland Business Association (SHBA)

prefers to say thank you to our wonderful members with grilled hot dogs, hamburgers, and saucy BBQ

ribs with a side of baked beans, corn, potato salad, chips, yellow and chocolate cake, watermelon,

popcorn, lemonade and snow cones.

SHBA’s annual picnic, which was held on July 27, 2017, is one of our most popular and well-attended

events. We always look forward to hosting this outing so that our members and guests can engage in

casual conversation while enjoying a relaxing and delicious lunch in South Holland’s beautiful Veterans

Park.

While the feast was the focus of the event, we also had a “do-it-yourself” massage chair, games, and

no SHBA event would be complete without plenty of raffles. (Speaking of raffles, congratulations to

Farmers Insurance Agent Jamie Clay for being the lucky winner of SHBA’s Lottery Raffle! We hope

that Jamie’s good luck continues and that he scores big on the lottery tickets that he won.)

SHBA would like to say a big “Thank You” to the volunteers who helped with the picnic and to our

wonderful and supportive sponsors for their donations and in-kind gifts: Ed Miniat, MB Finanical

Bank, Walt’s Food Center, Kirk’s BBQ, South Holland Bank, Illiana Financial Credit Union and South

Holland Public Works. We also want to give a special “thank you” to SHBA’s Picnic Committee who

devoted time, energy and effort to planning this great event!

SELL MORE THAN THE PRODUCT – SELL “HOPE”BY LARRY GALLER

Years ago, Charles Revson, the founder of Revlon Cosmetics was quoted as saying, “In the factory we make cosmetics. In the store, we sell hope.” The fact is that no one “needs” that product, but it is something Revlon’s customers “want” and “hope” they can buy. And it was the component of “hope” that made Revlon stand out from the rest because their competition was just selling cosmetics.

“Hope” was the key to Revlon’s success but there are many other attributes that customers and prospects want to buy such as reliability, delivery speed, pricing advantages, peace-of-mind, durability, style, prestige, security, health, comfort, safety, and the list goes on almost endlessly.

Revson was the consummate marketer. Understanding his quote about the duality of a product (or service) is important to every business, every marketer, no matter what you sell. There is a difference between the “content” of a product and the “message” of a product. Both parts have to be of value. In the case of Revlon cosmetics, the consumer doesn’t care what is inside the lipstick case, but how she feels about herself when she looks in the mirror or how she feels she is going to look when using the product. Please don’t accuse me of being sexist here because men purchase “hope” with other products such as cars and athletic footwear.

Revlon, Ferrari, and Nike all sell “hope” as a component of their products. Pharmaceutical companies sell “hope of better health” in their print and television ads. Internet security companies sell “safety from computer virus infection.”

The question for you and your business is “what is the content of the products and services you sell and how can you convey that message to your marketplace? Please realize that, to be successful with this message, subtlety and nuance are important in getting that message across because the psychology of these messages deal with our insecurities and need to be more confident when making purchasing decisions.

How can you sell “hope” (or the attributes important for your products and services)? How can you transform whatever it is that you sell to include a component of not-quantifiable quality such as aspiration or superiority or “hope”? If you can do it you are almost guaranteed increased sales! I “hope” you discover what your customers and prospects hope for and can craft your marketing and sales messages to show that their “hopes” will be well satisfied when they purchase from you.
