LEARNING CLUB California Gully Primary School in conjunction with The Smith Family and La Trobe University

are offering a Learning Club to all students. The aim of the Learning Club is to enhance students

reading and literacy skills, assist with homework and provide additional learning support to stu-

dents in a fun, structured and supported environment.

The sessions will be conducted for the duration of Term 2, Wednesdays from 3.15pm – 5.00pm at

the school. Students must register to be part of the program and be committed to undertaking the

full term. All sessions will be planned and supervised by a qualified teacher from La Trobe Univer-

sity and staffed by students undertaking the Bachelor of Education at La Trobe University. There

is no cost for this program. To run the program we need a minimum of 15 children and the maxi-

mum number of children that can be involved is 22. An Expression of Interest and Registration

Form can be obtained at the front office. We must have confirmed numbers by this time

next week. Thank you to the families who have already completed the Expression of Interest

form. There are still a number of places available for those families interested.

STUDENT ABSENTEE LETTER

Last Monday Student Absentee Letters were sent home to families where there are unexplained

absences. Every day a child is absent we require notification and the most effective way is to com-

plete an absent form. Absent forms are being sent home this week for your convenience. ALSO

parents who have downloaded the Skoolbag App have started to use the absent note eform to let

the school know their child is away which is quite convenient and effective.

SKOOLBAG - 60 people from our school communi-ty have downloaded the App!

Have you downloaded the Skoolbag App? It is the easiest way to keep up to date

with events and information we need to pass on to you. The school mobile App com-

municates directly with iPhone, and Android devices. The following link provides de-

tails of how to install the app. http://www.skoolbag.com.au/forparents.php. Or just

go to your provider’s app store and type in skoolbag and it will appear. It’s free!

LIBRARY OPENING HOURS - TUESDAY & FRIDAY 8.30 a.m. to 8.55 a.m. Don’t forget the library is open Tuesday and Friday’s mornings

(8.30am-8.55am) for children to return books, borrow books and if

they feel like it, relax and read a book for 15 minutes.

This year our school is going to celebrate

100 days of Maths in Term 3.

On Day 21 of Maths, Grade 6 worked on palindromic

sums.

As part of our Maths program, we are collecting egg cartons, plastic milk bottle lids and

plastic takeaway food containers with lids. If you could save these and send them to

school, we would appreciate it. Please send them to Mrs Windridge’s classroom.

ROYAL CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL GOOD FRIDAY APPEAL The Good Friday Appeal is a unique fundraising activity that brings together people from all

parts of the community in a very special way. The common goal is to raise money for The Roy-

al Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, and to ensure that all children with life threatening illnesses

receive the best possible medical and clinical care.

It all started in 1931 when groups of journalists from the Herald & Weekly Times organised a

sporting carnival in aid of charity, the Children’s Hospital being a recipient of the funds. In

1942, Sir Keith Murdoch as Managing Director and Editor the “The Herald” agreed that “The

Herald” and radio station 3DB should broadcast an all day Appeal on Good Friday. In 1957,

Channel 7 joined the Appeal and began the first daylong telethon, which is now held at Mel-

bourne’s Telstra Dome.

School’s have been involved in the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal through the

distribution of Appeal envelopes (there was one attached to the newsletter

two weeks ago). Here at California Gully Primary School we are proud to

continue supporting the Appeal; many of us know or will know of a child

who has had to spend time in the Royal Children’s Hospital.

If you would like to show your support for this worthwhile charity, you

can do so by returning the donation envelope by Wednesday March 25th.

Donation envelopes can be left with Nicole in the school office.

Dahlia and Arts Procession is drawing near:

Saturday March 21st

All children participating in the Dahlia and Arts Procession

will have received a note indicating the time and place that

we need to meet on Saturday. Children will need to come

dressed in their costume.

We will need a few adults to help prepare the truck on Saturday morn-

ing at school. Please let Nicole Cooper know at the office if you have not al-

ready contacted Annette or Kathryn.

A lot of effort has gone into preparing the items for the float. We are looking

forward to an enjoyable time for all the children participating. If

watching from the road side, please give us a huge applause as we

pass by.

Ride2School Day Ride2School Day was a great success. Well done to all the children who rode

their bikes or scooters and walked to school on Friday. Over 60% of our chil-

dren rode or walked to school, compared to only 23% when we collected

Hands-Up data in February. It would be great if we could continue to have

lots of children riding and walking to school.

GREAT TIPS FOR HEALTHY KIDS TIP 41. EATING TOGETHER MAKES SENSE Whatever the style of your family, it makes good sense to eat together at the table as often as you can.

It is a good opportunity to spend time with each other.

By eating nutritious family meals, kids develop healthy eating habits, and they benefit from eating in a

nurturing environment. It’s also a chance for them to learn good table manners.

What you can do NOW Turn the TV off during mealtimes. Introduce new foods to everyone in the family. Expect help when clearing the table and cleaning up.

Good Idea!

Most families are very busy these days,

with family members rushing off in all di-

rections. If it’s too difficult to meet for

meals, choose just one mealtime in the

week to get together, such as Sunday lunch

or dinner.

Top Tip

Invite your child to come up with a menu for a family

meal, then help with the shopping and preparation.

HEALTHY

GUIDELINES FOR

KIDS...

Ensure kids have good eating habits by

providing them with a variety of healthy meals and snacks.

Influencing your child’s food selection is

not an easy task, as kids are naturally reluctant to try new foods, that is they

dislike new foods. Be patient; it may take up to 10 exposures before a new food is

accepted by a child, and it is during a child’s development when their palate and tastebuds are most influential.

Kids are grazers and its best that they eat according to

their appetite. Ensure that healthy options are available

for them to snack on such as cut up vegetable sticks or fruit pieces.

Your child has a small stomach with high nutrient

requirements so their foods eaten will vary every meal.

The best help you can offer your kids is

making sure that there is always an

abundance of breads, cereals, vegetables

and fruits available; incorporate lean

meats and dairy foods in their diet;

encourage drinking of plenty of water;

choose low salt foods; and most

importantly follow these

yourself to be a good

role model.
