The 14th Annual Mother Teresa Maternity Home Dinner and Auction held on Sat. February 4, was another sellout festive evening for the 240 guests in attendance. The “Evening of Elegance” transformed Gurnell Hall into a Mardi Gras decorated dining room filled with guests wearing their best and snazziest attire.
Once inside the dining room, guests had an opportunity to hear the live “soft Jazz” music from the Black Tuesday Jazz Band and to view and bid on over 70 silent auction items plus purchase a wine cork to participate in the Barrel of Wine game and a chance to win one of three packages of fine wine. A scrumptious dinner was prepared by Master Chef Mike Inks of the Foothill Grill and served by the ROP students from El Dorado High School.
Auctioneer Jack Sweeney was assisted by our emcee Jim Yates.
Together they conducted an exciting live auction. The 13 Live Auction items included a Carmel/Monterey Get-A-Way; A four night stay at Beautiful Lake Tahoe; Oakland Raiders Tickets; various packages of fine wine and jewelry courtesy of Randolph’s Jewelers and tickets to see the San Francisco Giants battle their way to an “odd year” World Series.
Our “Fund – A- Need,” gave everyone an opportunity to participate in the funding of the much needed Transitional Housing Fund. This fund is being used to assist our graduate residents and their babies, with vouchers for necessary items needed upon leaving the home.
Through the generosity of the sponsors, donors and guests, the event will help support the Mother Teresa Maternity Home for the coming year. Be sure to mark your calendar for the 15th Annual event on February 3, 2018.

The home is going through some major changes this month. In Mid-March we gained two new residents bringing us to our capacity. Just as spring brings new growth in nature we too will witness a growing community in our home as we anxiously await the arrival of our smallest residents; two of which are due in April.
Our house is full of energetic, motivated women! We have three working residents and it’s been a joy to see these women searching for work, going to interviews and finally starting jobs! Two residents are searching for work while another has spent her time her preparing herself to be a mom; attending parenting classes, cooking socials and walking to her other appointments to keep her body healthy.
The residents and staff are enjoying preparing meals in the newly updated kitchen.

Joann Bonini Lives in Rescue with her husband, John, and their four children. They are parishioners at Holy Trinity Parish and all four of the children graduated from Holy Trinity School. Joann graduated with a bachelors in elementary education from the University of Illinois and received her masters in elementary education from the University of New Mexico. She taught in the Albuquerque Public Schools before she and John moved to Gilbert, Arizona where she homeschooled their children until third grade. Upon moving to Rescue, Joann has been involved in nonprofit work and service at Holy Trinity School and
Parish, St. Francis High School, Christian Brothers High School and various other organizations. Joann is looking forward to working with the MTMH board in their efforts to support the women and children being served.
Michelle Gianini has lived in Cameron Park for 27 years and has been a parishioner of Holy Trinity Parish since it’s inception. Michelle earned her business degree from Sac. State where she was employed for 25 years. Since retiring last July, she has enjoyed spending time with family, increasing volunteer activities at Holy Trinity and pursuing personal interests. She looks forward to working with the Board of Directors and staff of the Mother Teresa Maternity Home.

The kitchen is often thought of as the Heart of the Home. As people sometimes need heart surgery, the kitchen at the Mother Teresa Home received much needed and long talked about refurbishing.
It all began with the dishwasher. The home was built at a time when automatic dishwashers were rare. Hand washing is fine for a few dishes, but with six women and several infants in the Home, a dishwasher was needed. Unfortunately the cabinets and kitchen sink would not accommodate a built-in appliance, so for the last several years the residents have made do with a dishwasher-on-wheels which had to be hooked up to the faucet. During the wash cycle the kitchen sink was therefore unusable! This problem will be no more.
Tom Foster of Gold Country Home Repair worked his magic. After tearing out the old cabinets, counter and sink, new ones were installed – cabinets, counter top, kitchen sink and of course the built-in dishwasher. The inconvenience of the update took a little more than a week and was well worth it. The result is almost as dramatic as a heart transplant!
