Port Washington Play Troupe presents Once Upon A Mattress, July 22-24 & July 29-31 at the Jeanne Rimsky Theater, at Landmark on Main Street. This classic musical comedy fairy tale has music by Mary Rodgers, lyrics by Marshall Barer, and book by Jay Thompson. It is directed by Brian E. Long, with musical direction by David Barnett. Story: Due to a curse, King Sextimus is unable to speak. His terror of a wife, Queen Aggravian, has taken over control of the kingdom. In an attempt to keep her ‘mama’s-boy’ Prince Dauntless single, she has decreed that only the princess who can pass her test may marry her son. After princess number 12 fails to pass the queen’s test, a search turns up Winnifred the Woebegone (Fred) who passes the Queen's impassable sensitivity test (a pea under a mattress). When the Queen tries to prevent them from marrying, the prince tells her to 'shut up,' breaking the curse on the king, who regains his rightful position as leader of the kingdom, and all is well.
