President’s Report______________Recently, I took the opportunity to look at the work that is going on at the Bluff revetment. As you may recall, the Board approved the expenditure to reinforce the Bluff with additional layers of stone in order to protect the Bluff from major storms and natural erosion. The work is coming along well and is currently ahead of schedule. The project to strengthen the Bluff revetment has been ongoing, in phases, for several years and will likely continue for another fi ve or six years until the fi nal “cap stone” layer is placed on the revetment to ensure that the previous layers stay in place. It is a time consuming process to truck the stone in from upstate and place it properly to make sure it is performing its function. This all needs to be done while working around the tide changes. The Board of Directors regularly discusses this project and has agreed again this year that the multi-year approach is the best approach to take in order to keep assessments as low as possible and not incur any debt.

A project of this scope does create some problems for parts of the Plantation. As the big rock-hauling trucks make their way to the Bluff and dump their loads, they are creating traffi c and noise in some of our otherwise quiet neighborhoods. I apologize for this inconvenience, but I hope you will agree that this temporary problem is worth it in the long run. This phase should be completed in January, depending on the weather. The Bluff, Pine Island, and Dolphin Head are some of the best and most heavily used amenities we have on the Plantation and these facilities are enjoyed by many of our residents and guests everyday. Soon, the entire Bluff will be reopened for all to enjoy.

Especially at this time of year, I am reminded how thankful I am for so many things; I will share a few of them with you:

1. Great family and friends.2. Our Armed Forces who protect our country, and

their families.3. The volunteers who serve our community.4. A well functioning and hard working Hilton Head

Plantation Board of Directors.5. The hard work and professionalism of our

Plantation Staff.6. Signs of a recovering economy.

My wife, Laura, and I would like to wish all of you and your families a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and a Happy New Year. Travel safe and I will be back with you next year. --Richard Sell

General Manager’s ReportSupport Local Businesses During these uncertain economic times, we are all trying our best to keep our household costs in check. If, however, you have the occasion to eat out or require a service provider for a repair or other need, please keep in mind our local establishments. Our local restaurants survive during the winter months on the patronage of Island residents. Service providers also depend on Island residents to keep them going during the off-season. Please consider patronizing our local businesses during these tough fi scal times.

Wood Hog and Free MulchAs you may be aware, we replaced our 25+-year-old “Tub Grinder” with a pre-owned “Wood Hog”. Many of you have seen this machine in action as you drop off your yard debris at the Drop Off Center located inside the Farm. We have recently changed the grinding heads on this new acquisition and it is turning out a superior mulch product. If you are interested in getting a free delivery of this great mulch, please call the POA Service Center at 681-8800 ext. 0. We deliver mulch on Thursdays and there is no charge to residents for either the mulch or the delivery.

Coffee with PeterOur next Coffee is scheduled for Thursday, February 18, 10:00 AM, at the Plantation House. Besides our usual updates and a question and answer period, we will use part of the meeting to introduce the Candidates that are running for the three open seats on the Board. If you are new to our lovely community, these Coffees are a great way to get up-to-speed on the operations of the Plantation.

Hilton Head Plantation Conservancy FoundationDue to your continued generosity, the Conservancy Foundation was able to repair the damage to the nature trails and benches destroyed by last year’s fi re in the Whooping Crane Conservancy. The cost of this work has brought down the coffers of the Conservancy Foundation. The Trustees for the HHP Conservancy Foundation would like to make additional improvements to the Conservancies, including having new plaques placed in the meadow and along the boardwalk denoting the various species of fauna and fl ora indigenous to the Conservancy. The Whooping Crane and Cypress Conservancies comprise well over 100 acres of unspoiled wetlands and forest. These two features are among the many elements that set HHP apart from other planned communities. Funding for the maintenance and improvements to these two valued natural treasures are, for the most part, derived from the generosity of Hilton Head Plantation residents. Once again, this year’s assessment mailing will contain a letter from

the Conservancy Foundation’s Fundraising Chairman Frank Wilcher who is asking you to consider making a voluntary donation to the Hilton Head Plantation Conservancy Foundation. As always, your contributions are tax-deductible. Please look for Frank’s letter in your January 2010 assessment mailing.

Note CardsWe continue to offer for sale note cards for the very reasonable price of $7.00 for a package of twelve. These very attractive note cards, which were fi rst put up for sale by the HHP Women’s Club, make great stocking stuffers and housewarming gifts. All the proceeds from the sale of these very special note cards will go to benefi t the HHP Conservancy Foundation. If you would like to make a donation before the end of 2009, you may make out your check to the Hilton Head Plantation Conservancy Foundation (HHPCF) and either drop it off at the POA Service Center or mail it to HHPCF, PO Box 21430, Hilton Head Island, SC 29925.

SpeedingPlease be aware that HHP Security has stepped up its enforcement of speeding on the Plantation. HHP Security Offi cers are licensed law enforcement Offi cers in the State of South Carolina and as such they are authorized to issue State tickets for infractions of traffi c laws. State tickets carry a hefty fi ne and also place points on your Driver's License that may affect your insurance premiums. Please drive the speed limit. Be aware that Security vehicles are now equipped with video cameras and most traffi c stops are being taped.

Email AlertsOur Safety Alerts, Urgent Information, Plantation Activities, and electronic Plantation Living provide subscribers with prompt information. If a crime or suspicious activity occurs in your neighborhood, we want you to be informed, alert, and take very simple, but practical, steps to lessen your chances of becoming a victim of a crime. If a weather event or other emergency is pending, this system allows us to get the word out expeditiously. Plantation Activities provides subscribers with reminders about upcoming HHP events. You may also receive an electronic copy of Plantation Living right to your computer in living color. This free service is especially helpful if you are a part-time resident or on the road. Thus far, about 1,050 individuals have signed up. Enhanced communication is the objective of this push to have residents and property owners sign up. It's easy to subscribe and can be done from the POA’s Website www.hiltonheadplantation.com or by calling Denise McAllister at 681-8800 ext. 244.

Credit CardsThe POA is now equipped to take Visa and MasterCard for most payments. Please see the story on page 1.

Holiday Decorations and HayrideI want to thank everyone who has decorated their home for the Christmas and Hanukkah observances. Your efforts are a gift to your neighborhoods and allow HHP to take on a special festive appearance for all to enjoy. I would encourage all residents to get involved in the spirit of the season.

For those of you whose homes are along the Hayride route, I would encourage you to make sure your outdoor and indoor decorations are turned on. Your displays add to the ambiance experienced by those participating in the Hayride. The time, date, and route can be found on page 8.

Recycling ContainersNew recycling containers have been placed at the Spring Lake Pavilion, the Plantation House, and Dolphin Head Pavilion. Please use these new receptacles for glass, plastic, and aluminum. Thanks for helping keep HHP a community that cares about the environment.

Cross Country Track As you may be aware, the POA permits Hilton Head High School’s Cross Country Track Team to practice on the Plantation. This year, both the Girls and Boys Cross County teams won their respective State Championships. If you see these young people going through their paces, you may want to congratulate them on their achievement which, I am sure is, in part, due to the challenges they face dodging alligators, snakes, cyclists, and an occasional leashed canine as they are running through the Plantation.

2010 CensusThe Beaufort Census Bureau is looking for Census Enumerators. Enumerators are paid $12.75 per hour and $.55 per mile for usage of their automobile. Enumerators work fl exible hours and, for just a few weeks, Enumerators are assigned areas in or near their community. Anyone interested in working with the Census Bureau may call their job line (843) 982-5420 to schedule testing at a nearby test site.

The last Census was in 2000 and a lot has changed in our community, county, state, and nation since then. The 2010 Census will undoubtedly impact our future and every resident plays a signifi cant role. Here are just a few ways the Census data is used:

To draw congressional, state, and local legislative • districtsTo allocate Federal funds for state and local • governmentsBy Congress to adopt policy and Federal legislation•

As input for planning community improvements • (e.g. roads, schools, hospitals)

The Census will begin in March 2010.

Projects The following are the projects and items that are budgeted for completion or purchase in 2010: ● incrementally apply Armor stone to the Bluff in the fall/winter of 2009/10; ● paint Spring Lake Pavilion, Plantation House, Dolphin Head Pavilion, the POA Service Center, and the Security building; ● for the Plantation House−replace the carpet, repair and paint the ceiling, refi nish the dance fl oor, replace the sound system, and replace the compressor and air handlers; ● replace the ice machine at the Maintenance facility; ● replace the POA Service Center’s phone system; ● replace the carpet in the Security building; ● renovate the landscaping and signs at the Main Gate; ● secure the permits necessary to renourish the Pine Island Spit; ● resurface and repair sections of the POA’s leisure paths; ● resurface the roadbed between the traffi c circle and the Main Gate; ● add a decorative concrete pad to both the Main and Visitor Gates; ● renovate a bank of six tennis courts at the Spring Lake Racquet Club; ● replace three Gate Pass computers; ● replace one-third of the deck at Dolphin Head Pavilion; ● replace the gate at the RV storage area with an automated gate; ● and replace one Patrol vehicle with a six-cylinder Dodge Charger. The inclusion on this list does not indicate that the project or purchase will absolutely be completed in 2010. It merely indicates that these projects will be evaluated by the Board based on present status and budget considerations.

Please Enjoy SafelyDuring the coming weeks, we will all be socializing and enjoying friends and family. Please remember to enjoy the company of acquaintances and loved ones responsibly. If you go out on the town to celebrate, consider designating a driver. We want all of you to arrive back home safe and sound.

On behalf of the entire POA Staff, may I extend to you and your families a very joyous and safe Christmas and Hanukkah season. A special thank you to the Women’s Club, Avid Gardeners, and POA Staff members Harold Wright, Elijah Jenkins, and Betsy Weppner for the wonderful job they did decorating the Plantation for the holidays.

A special thanks to the hundreds of volunteers who gave of themselves over the past year. It is through these volunteer efforts that Hilton Head Plantation maintains its reputation as one of the fi nest residential communities in the Lowcountry.

Stay Safe Peter Kristian

“Harry Heron,” theCovenants Bird

This month’s focus: Santa!

Harry: I have four-year-old twin girls, Sharon and Heather, and

they are very concerned about Santa getting onto Hilton Head Plantation to deliver his presents.

Do we need to call in a Guest Pass for Santa? If not, can you tell me if Santa has purchased a Commercial Day pass in advance since the Dispatch Offi ce at the Main Gate will be closed on Christmas Eve? Also, does Santa enter through the Main or Cypress Gate?

--Christine on Headlands Drive

Christine, so many questions…please put Sharon and Heather’s minds at ease. Back when Hilton Head Plantation was fi rst established, the POA’s Board of Directors issued Santa a special eternity decal for his sleigh. In fact, they even granted a waiver for Santa’s sleigh bells ringing so late at night. I can tell you that, from my vantage point at 200 feet above the Plantation, Santa enters by the Main Gate every Christmas Eve and checks with the Offi cer on duty for any adjustments to Santa’s “Naughty and Nice” list. I can’t remember the last time the Offi cer ever gave Santa anything but an excellent last minute report on all the boys and girls snug in their beds on Hilton Head Plantation.

A little inside Santa information…and please don’t tell Santa I shared this…Santa checks in with the Gate Offi cer so he can alert all the Patrol Offi cers that he’s making his run. This is done just in case Security gets a call about a “portly” older gentleman with a white beard, dressed in a red suit with white trim and a red hat darting about Hilton Head Plantation behind a team of reindeer. The Offi cers will know it’s just jolly old Saint Nick.

You would think that Santa would stick to the roadways to guide his sleigh to each home, wouldn’t you? Well, he doesn’t. He follows the golf course fairways whenever possible. Why? ...because they are nice and wide and a lot easier for his reindeer to land on than the hard surface

of the road. Besides, it is sometimes very diffi cult for Rudolph’s bright red nose to shine through the tree canopy along our roadways. His nose has no problem illuminating the fairways. I know the golf course superintendents always wonder why deer tracks appeared out of nowhere in the middle of the fairways on Christmas morning. Now you know it was Santa’s reindeer taking off and landing while making their rounds.

One other thing: Santa likes Chocolate Macadamia Nut cookies best. I always leave a few of them on the side of my nest for Santa along with a nice glass of milk.

Santa’s last stop is always at the Cypress Gate where he checks out with the Gate Offi cer to let him (or her) know that all was quiet and that he fi nished his run. If you live on a golf course, peek out your back window at sunrise on Christmas morning before the dew dries and you will see the early morning workers scratching their heads wondering how the reindeer tracks suddenly appeared in the middle of the fairways! Now you know the real story.

From my nest to your home, have a joyous and safe holiday season.

--Harry Heron

The holiday shopping season is a peak time for crimes such as home burglaries, thefts, and even muggings. Here are some tips that can help prevent you from being the victim of a crime during the holiday season.

At HomeBe extra cautious about locking doors and • windows at all times.Don’t display gifts and other valuables where • they can be seen from a window or doorway. If you go out in the evening, turn on lights • and a radio or television so the house looks occupied. If you go on vacation, get an automatic timer • for your lights. Ask a neighbor or trusted friend to watch your house, pick up the mail and newspapers, and park their car in your driveway from time to time. Fill out a Home Check Card with the Security Department and drop it at any one of our gates. Beware of package deliveries where couriers • have the "wrong" address. Write down tag numbers of suspicious delivery attempts. After Christmas, don’t advertise your new • electronics and/or other new valuables that you have just received by putting the boxes out on the curb for the garbage collectors. Break the boxes down and fold them so the words are on the inside.

ShoppingStay alert to your surroundings and the people • around you. If you see people “hanging around” parking garages, parking lots, or the outside of stores, avoid the area. Notify the police or security department.Shop before dark if possible. Coordinate • shopping trips with a friend if you plan to be out late. Never park your car in an unlit area, no matter how convenient it is.Lock your car doors and windows even if you • are only gone for a few minutes.Keep packages and other valuables out of • public view, preferably locked in the trunk.Park near street lights if possible and have • your keys in hand when you return to your

car.

NoticeYour interactions with members

of the Security Departmentmay be recorded.

Security − Holiday Crime Prevention

Always check the interior of your car before you • unlock the door to get in.To discourage purse-snatchers, don’t • overburden yourself with packages. Have your purchases delivered whenever practical.Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Pay for • purchases with a check or credit card whenever possible. Be extra careful with purses and wallets. Carry a purse under your arm with the strap across your body. Keep a wallet in an inside jacket pocket, not a back trouser pocket.Teach your children to go to a store clerk or • security guard and ask for help if they should become separated in a store or shopping mall. They should never go into a parking lot alone.

Happy Holidays! Art Benoit, Director of Security

Holiday Lighting Contest/ Driving Tour___As an encouragement for lighting up our holidays, the POA conducts the Holiday Lighting Contest/Driving Tour. The rules for the contest are fairly simple and include some do’s & don’ts.

1. Outdoor holiday decorations were ready for viewing on Monday, December 14.

2. A voting ballot is available at the POA Service Center, and below.

3. View decorations from the street only. This is not an invitation to "tromp" the lawns of others.

4. Make your selection and return your voting ballot no later than:

Monday, December 21 to the POA Service Center or the Plantation House.

5. If there is a particular street that is interested in being represented in the Holiday Tour, please call the POA at

681-8800, ext. 242.

And yes, there are POA guidelines for outdoor decorations:

1. White lights are preferred for outdoor decorations.

2. No blinking lights.3. If fl oodlights are used, point them towards

your home.4. Turn off music by 10:00 PM and outdoor

lights by Midnight.5. All exterior holiday decorations are to be

put away by Tuesday, January 19, 2010.

Although Plantation residents use their criteria for judging the winners, the POA encourages tasteful, attractive, and charming decorations. The key is… All things in moderation. The winners will be announced in the January newsletter and on the Website.

Few trees are more evocative of the South than live oaks, with their graceful, spreading growth form and massive branches draped with garlands of Spanish moss. The name “live oak” refers to one of the most distinctive features of these trees: their habit of retaining their leaves throughout the winter, in contrast to the deciduous oaks of the Northeast and Midwest. Actually, there are several dozen species of evergreen oaks found throughout North America, Europe, and Asia; our Hilton Head species is Quercus virginiana (Southern or Virginia live oak), common throughout the coastal Southeast from Virginia to Texas. It is the state tree of Georgia.

Southern live oak is common in coastal areas due to its tolerance of salt spray, sandy soil, and high salinity, but it also grows in moist woodlands and along the banks of streams. Because of the strength and high density of its wood, the species was once used extensively for shipbuilding. Live oak wood was a major structural component of The USS Constitution (“Old Ironsides”), both during its original construction and in its later restoration.

Although live oaks remain green year-round, they do drop their older leaves gradually in the spring as new ones are produced. The stiff, leathery leaves lack the prominent lobes characteristic of many other oaks. Clusters of inconspicuous, wind-pollinated, staminate (“male”) and pistillate (“female”) fl owers also appear in the spring, both types on the same tree. As in other oaks, the fruits are acorns, produced abundantly in late summer and are an important food source for wild turkeys, jays, wood ducks, deer, squirrels, and raccoons.

The large canopies of live oaks provide cover and nest sites for a variety of birds and mammals, and their large, sprawling branches support dense colonies of mosses and resurrection ferns. Probably the most familiar plant associate of live oaks is Spanish moss (Tillandsia usneoides), which is actually not a moss but a fl owering plant in the same family as pineapples. An epiphyte (“air plant”), Spanish moss manufactures its own food via photosynthesis and uses oak branches for support, soaking up rainwater and also various

minerals leached out from the tree. An oak is unlikely to be harmed by its festoons of Spanish moss unless unusually dense growths of the epiphyte reduce the amount of light penetrating the canopy, thus slowing the tree’s growth rate.

Live oaks can attain huge dimensions and impressive ages. Mature trees can reach heights of 60-80 feet and develop magnifi cent crowns 60-120 feet across. They can also grow to be hundreds of years old.

Ancient specimens have been reported throughout the southern states; in Hilton Head Plantation we have our own Talbird Oak (see photo below), dating back to the 1700’s, and near Charleston is the majestic Angel Oak, possibly at least several centuries older.

Plantation Golfi ng________________________________ by Jerry Cutrer Women’s Plantation Cup

The 7th Annual Women’s Plantation Cup Golf Tournament was played between teams fi elded by the four Golf Clubs in Hilton Head Plantation (Bear Creek Golf Club, Country Club of Hilton Head, Dolphin Head Golf Club, and Oyster Reef Golf Club). The two-day event featuring ten two-person teams from each Club led by the Club Professional was played at Oyster Reef Golf Club and Dolphin Head Golf Club on November 18-19.

The competition was especially close this year with the Country Club team taking a two-stroke lead over Dolphin Head on the fi rst day and expanding that lead by an additional four strokes on day two for a six-stroke victory. Final scores were Country Club 972, Dolphin Head 978, Oyster Reef 982, and Bear Creek 990.

Oyster Reef’s Tammy Woodward and Mary Ann Sanders recorded the Tournament’s low one-day net score (63) and low two-day net score (133). Low two-day scores for the other Clubs were Doris Prendergast and Annie Mellinger 135 (Country Club), Carol Jackson and Genia Edelman 136 (Bear Creek), and Pat Rapp and Sally Fenton 137 (Dolphin Head).

Fishing ClubThere will be no Dinner Meeting in December. Hopefully, you all attended the Christmas Party on December 7.

The next meeting will take place on Wednesday, January 27. That will be our annual pre-Super Bowl Tailgate Party.

By now, all members should have received a membership renewal form via e-mail. If you haven’t, or haven’t returned it, please bring a check with you to the January meeting. Annual dues for 2010 are $20 for a couple, $10 for a single membership.

A slate of excellent speakers has already been lined up for our 2010 meetings. None of the speakers have been with us in the past and they all will be speaking on subjects we haven’t heard before, so there should be a lot of interesting things going on.

If you weren’t at the October meeting, you may not be aware of the fact that all of the current Offi cers and Board members were unanimously re-elected. I guess that says that the Club is happy with the way things are going. Unfortunately, it also says that no other members seem willing to help in running the Club. The Board would love to have some of your ideas regarding new and different Club activities. Please speak to Dave Morse if you’d like to become more involved.

For anyone reading this article who is not a member of the Club, please consider joining. You do not have to be an angler to enjoy our meetings. Many of our members rarely fi sh and none of the speakers scheduled for next year will be speaking about fi shing. While most of our membership consists of couples, we currently have about eight individual

As colder weather approaches, fi shing in the lagoons will start to slow down. The fi sh know that they are going to have to store up some food to last them until spring so they can be quite aggressive and really attack your lure. Fishing in the creeks surrounding Hilton Head has been quite improved compared to the last few years. There are a lot of fi sh, but not too many have reached legal size. Take advantage of the remaining fi shing weather! Call Gary Turner with your fi shing questions. His number is 342-3254.

Farmers Club__________Welcome to winter in the South. December usually brings us some lovely days in which to meander over

to the Farm and see what’s what. The thousands of Vidalia onions we ordered should be planted now and need watering every other day to keep them sweet. The little ones are delicious used as green onions, so I hope you ordered enough. According to the planting chart in the back of your directory, lettuce can be planted from December 20 to February 5. If you wait until later, it will probably go bitter and ‘bolt’. It says to plant radishes, turnips, and carrots January 1, but gives peas (my favorite crop) only a short period of January 10-20. Actually, it depends on our weather. If it’s too cold, the seeds will just rot, and you will end up planting them again. If you can't fi nd seeds of the wonderful Sugar Snaps at the store, order them from Park Seed online at www.parkseed.com or any other catalog you like.

Spinach also has a short window of January 1-20. It’s a heavy feeder, and likes compost in the soil. Continue to transplant strawberry runners, and try to fi nd space for a few asparagus roots. Lots of little larkspur, bachelor buttons, and other fl owers are up. You can contact me for a few or a lot if you want any.

Remember to close the red valve on your water post if there is a freeze predicted. Then open a spigot on the top to drain the water. If this is not done, and the pipe freezes, you will be responsible for a $40 replacement fee. Don’t forget to remove your timers and other watering aids to prevent damage to them.

Avid Gardeners_____________________________Hilton Head Plantation is once again radiant in its holiday splendor. Thanks go to the homeowners who decorated their homes and yards, the Avid Gardeners and helpers who trimmed the area neighborhood signs with lights, garlands and bows, and, especially to the POA and their Maintenance team for their assistance. We consider it an honor to participate each year.

Winter holidays in the South...if with family, friends, or strangers here or away, no matter where or with whom, it's the spirit of the season that matters and penetrates our being.

Instead of our monthly meeting, the Avid Gardeners held their annual Christmas Party at the Bear Creek Golf Club. It was a festive occasion shared by family and friends.

All HHP residents (we now have several male members) are encouraged to join us at our meetings held on the third Friday of the month in the Spring Lake Pavilion with a social at 9:30 AM followed by a business meeting and speaker.

On January 15, Avid Gardener member and biologist, Vicky McMillan will introduce us to some common species of dragonfl ies found in our lagoons. Her topic will cover how they feed, fi nd mates, and defend their territories — an intro into the lives of local wildlife.

For up-to-date information, visit our Website at www.theavidgardeners.org. For membership, phone Sally Price at 681-4577.

Craft Workshop______We would like to share with you an excerpt from the Letter to the Editor of The Island Packet written by Lynn Brooks, Executive Director of Hospice Care of the Lowcountry:

“For the past 15 years, the Hilton Head Plantation Craft Group has loyally supported Hospice Care of the Lowcountry by donating the proceeds of their Sales. This year, the group presented Hospice Care of the Lowcountry with a check for $10,000, bringing its grand total in donations to $152,000 over 15 years. It is diffi cult to fi nd the proper words to express enough gratitude for an ongoing gift this generous. Mother Teresa once said, ‘We cannot do great things on this earth; only small things with great love.’

"Each and everything they make is created with such care, such precision, with such great love. I would never even attempt to argue with Mother Teresa; after all, who really would? However, I do believe that out of all these small creations, something great has been accomplished. Over the past 15 years, the Hilton Head Plantation Craft Group has helped Hospice Care of the Lowcountry help countless terminally ill patients and their extended family members, and that is nothing short of extraordinary.”

We, the members of the HHP Craft Group, are extremely appreciative of Lynn’s very kind remarks and hope we can

Dog Club______________

Hello Dog Lovers! The November meeting of the Dog Club featured Bev Clark's “Belle” as the Dog of the Month — a sweet rescue who dotes on Bev almost as much as Bev dotes on Belle. We appreciated the good information shared by our presenter from the Pet Supermarket who spoke about proper nutrition for dogs.

Many members attended the HHP Pet Parade on October 30 and commented about the cute costumed dogs. In many cases, youngsters in costume accompanied the dogs. Often owning a pet is the best way to teach a child about handling responsibility, so we applaud all pet owners who ensure that children are taught how to interact with and care for pets.

The New Year will bring another round of monthly meetings with Dogs of the Month and guest speakers. In January we will host Stuart Campagna, owner of the new kennel, the Southpaw Resort, which will open on the Island in spring, 2010. Dog Club Members: don't miss this informative presentation! Non-members: join us for the meeting on Tuesday, January 12 at 7:00 PM at the Plantation House. Who knows? You just might enjoy the get-together!

If you have any dog-related questions, don't hesitate to contact me. I may not know the answer, but I will certainly try to locate someone who does.

“A Safari Through Africa” SeminarSince the times of the early explorers, the western world has held a fascination with the word “Safari.” Join the Activities Department for a glimpse into this forgotten world as we go on a quest for the people, the wilderness, and the adventure that gives the word its meaning.

Mark and Maria Homann of BushSpots have been guiding and running African safaris since 1992. Their presentation — “A Safari Through Africa” — will start you on a journey from Cape Town to Nairobi to discover Africa’s abundance and rich diversity of wildlife. Search for the big cats of South Africa’s Lowveld, the mysteries of the Kalahari Desert and the Okavango Delta, canoe the shadows of Kilimanjaro, and dance with Massai warriors.

We will stop along the way to discuss the spectacular array of safari accommodations that provide a home away from home for Africa’s modern day explorers. You will learn about many different types of safaris and activities and about the wilderness they take place in, as well as the animals and natural history that you’ll discover there.

Discover how, by simply going on a safari, you will be a positive force in conserving our global wildlife heritage and improving the lives of some of the world’s poorest people. Date: Tuesday, January 19 Time: 7:00 PM Where: Plantation House Cost: FREE RSVP: Keriann at 681-8090Light refreshments will be provided.
