Introduction

Yet to have a name, for now it’s just Android L.

Potentially being called Lollipop.

Set to be the biggest design change that

Android has made since the beginning.

Sticking to the current trend of flat design,

bright colours and clean UI.

Focusing on improving the user experience by

creating more animations and more touch

feedback.

Design Features

Less cluttered designs allow easier navigation and enhanced user experience of apps and

general usage of your device.

Taken a step towards how iOS looks, especially with transitions, which I think most people

would agree is a good move.

Sticking to the current trend of flat design, bright colours and clean UI.

Focusing on improving the user experience by creating more animations and more touch

feedback.

Not many changes have been made

to the new home screen, but they will

be releasing new icons with the official

release.

Multi-Tasking Screen

Original 2D list has been replaced

with a 3D style now.

Apps like Chrome will have individual

cards for each open tab instead of a

generic Chrome card which is very

beneficial.

Transitions of this new way to display

is much more effective.

Notification Bar

Notifications will be ordered in priority

to your specific needs, which Android

L will learn from how you use your

phone over time.

Making use of lower opacity levels for

backgrounds helping to create

cleaner designs and an easier UX.

Notification Bar (Settings)

A complete re-design has taken place

here.

Quick Settings such as the brightness

slider are accessible by sliding down

from the top twice.

Notifications are also available

underneath the normal settings icons.

Performance has increased and is now twice as fast as Kit Kat.

Battery life of phones had been said to be increased due to software on the phone

identifying where apps are draining the most battery power and making improvements

to lower useage.

New battery saver mode has said to add 90 minutes battery life to the Nexus 5, so it

should be similar on other devices.

Linking up with wearable technology such as watches, so that when your watch is near

your phone it will unlock automatically, rather than having to enter a pin.

Some Extra Points

Material Design

Google’s new design approach to Android is called Material Design.

Google says that this will make Android have “tactile surfaces, bold graphic design, and

fluid motion to create beautiful, intuitive experiences”

Everything is bright and full of colour.

L will include animations and transitions like never before, and visual cues that you’ve

tapped a button followed by fluid motions and transitions.

Plug your phone into your car, and your screen will be casted onto the car’s display

screen if compatible.

Works with voice commands which allows hands-free use age of your phone to minimise

distractions.

Can navigate to certain areas, ring contacts, send and reply to messages, find out the

weather, listen to music and many more things all from voice commands, and also many

other apps such as Spotify, News apps and Stitcher.

Over 60 car manufactures have so far signed up to work along side Android, so we will

begin seeing this in use by the close of the year.

Summary

Complete re-design that looks great and will definitely be seen as a step in the right

direction, and potentially bring iOS and other platform users over to Android.

Great overall user experience.

Bringing many different Android products together seamlessly and linking all of the latest

technology together.

There’s some great new phones soon to be released which will be using Android L, so this

could be a big factor on sales due to the fact the iPhone 6 is also set to be released at a

similar time.
