There are two types of miracles that G*d performs: revealed and hidden. Passover celebrates the open miracle which G*d performed for us in liberating us from Egyptian bondage, while Purim cele- brates the more hidden miracle of re- demption. Hidden because nowhere in the Megillah which we read on Purim is G*d's name ever mentioned, yet we are aware that He is working behind the scenes, masked by the false veneer of re- ality whose husks often hide the aware- ness of G*d's Presence among us. That is why we wear costumes and masks on Purim, to represent this very idea! This is because an open, revealed miracle does not require mankind to act. Redemption comes from Above. But a hidden miracle requires man to act and be the active agent of his own redemp- tion. G*d is the conductor, but we play the instruments. And this is how it has to be since Biblical days, as G*d seeks to give us full maturity and independence. We are no longer babies who need to be fed and nursed by a doting mother. G*d wants us to stand on our own two feet and take responsibil- ity for our world and our survival within it. Waiting for Mashiach, for G*d to create redemption for us, whether nationally or personally, is reflective of the immature mindset, of the child who sees himself as a helpless, potential victim, needing to be saved by another. A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT ……

Dear Temple Family, Spring is in the air. Tonight is Purim and the Rabbi will be reading the Megillah. It is a fun holiday – the kids will be in costume and making a lot of noise every time Haman’s name is mentioned – the only time they are not asked to be quiet – the louder the better. We will also enjoy our traditional hamentashen. Last Shabbat we had our annual Shabbat Across America dinner and services.

– WE MISSED YOU- We can plan and provide activities, dinners, brunches, etc. but it is not a success unless YOU attend. We have plans for the future – this month we will have our Passover Community Dinner on April 8. Yom Hashoah is April 19 – Holocaust Remembrance Day. With this day in mind, we will have a brunch on April 22 honoring our own Tom Breslauer, z”l. We will be showing the DVD of his life during that period and have a few speakers, including his lovely wife Camille. We are planning more Shabbat Dinners and Sunday brunches. A ‘Chef from the Past” has agreed to assist in the kitchen when possible, but we still need assistance with set up, etc. We need volunteers and ideas – there is a large library of videos available from the Jewish Federation – would you like a monthly brunch to show one? a light evening supper with movie? we will consider all suggestions – just let the program committee hear from you. Wishing everyone a Zissin Pesach. Shalom Suzanne Tremper, President

In the mosaic of Jewish history, there was an outpouring of hand-copied books on a variety of Judaic topics during the 12th and 13th centuries. One of these topics was Jewish mysticism, or the Kabbala, and one of the popular books on this topic was the “Sefer Hasidim” (Book of the Devout) by Judah the Pius. This book included stories about miracles, angels, spirits, devils, and wandering souls. In spite of its wide appeal, however, its unearthly subject matter made it controversial between intellectual Jews and gullible Jews.

Since most of us are probably unfamiliar with Jewish mysticism, I am approaching this topic as if the congregation asked me three questions: What is Jewish mysticism? What is its source? What role did it play in Jewish history?

Jewish mysticism may be defined as a spiritual movement originating in Europe during the medieval period and dealing with the creation of the world and with spiritual creatures such as angels, devils, and the soul after death. The Kabbalistic theory also held that G-d created the world by releasing Ten Seforim, or spiritual radiations, each with a specific function. The most popular of the Kabbalistic books was the Zohar (Brilliance) which appeared in Spain in 1250.

According to legend, it was dictated by angels to Simon ben Yohai, and it revealed the hidden meanings of the Torah. These books, together with many other religious works, inspired medieval Jews to regard themselves as a holy people who were devoted to sustaining their Jewish tradition in an antagonistic Christian Europe.

Although the Kabbala is part of the Jewish tradition, its content is regarded as dangerous for those who misunderstand its purpose, which is “Making the self into a better, more expanded individual, more transcenden-tal, more attuned to the essence and roots of one’s soul.” In short, it is to entwine heaven and earth and to involve humankind in this spiritual journey.

Whether medieval Jews lived in villages or ghettos, they were never safe from Christian rivalry and hostility ever since the Council of Nicaea (325 C.E.), which officially separated Jews from Christians. This troubled situation led to outbreaks of physical and verbal anti-Semitism, which forced Jewish communities to defend themselves as best they could. They relied on Holy Scripture and on the Kabbala to maintain their stalwart faith in Judaism. They were bold enough to engage in public disputations with Christian clergymen to prove that Judaism was the superior religion. In an extraordinary example of religious fervor, a mystic Jew named Abraham Abulafia traveled to Rome in 1280 with the intention of converting the Pope to Judaism!

As we see, Jewish mysticism has its roots in the Torah, and appealed to intellectual Jews who were inquisitive about the nature of God and the spiritual creatures that inhabit heaven and earth. The story that three rabbis suffered death while studying the Kabbala served to caution Jews about the danger of pursuing this esoteric subject. Consequently, it is believed that only mature, learned Jews are qualified to study the mysteries of the Kabbala. - Norman Gelber -

YOM HASHOAH CANDLES

It's been almost seventy years since the last Nazi concentration camp was liberated, and the Holocaust that claimed six million Jewish lives came to an end. To ensure that the six million did not die in vain and that the Holocaust never happens again, Temple Israel of the Poconos will join Jews throughout North America by participating in the Yom HaShoah Yellow Candle Program sponsored by the Federation of Jewish Men's Clubs in cooperation with the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. As the years past, the memories of those who fell victim to the ultimate hate crime must not diminish. That's why we are encouraging your family and every family in Temple Israel of the Poconos, in Stroudsburg, in Pennsylvania, and in North America to light at least one Yellow Candle on the night of Wednesday, April 18, 2012. When each family lights a Yellow Candle it will increase the awareness of the Holocaust, and perpetuate our commit-ment to our people. The memory is important because the number of Holocaust survivors is dimin-ishing with each passing day. As we lose this precious link, those who deny the Holocaust gain strength. Sadly, a portion of the children of this generation lack any knowledge of the Holocaust. Yom Hashoah candles are a highly visible symbol for keeping the flame alive. Their color recalls the badges Jews were forced to wear in Nazi-occupied Europe, but their flame inspires hope that we can yet make our world a toler-ant place to live.

In the spirit of remembrance, we encourage all of you to give Tzedakah (Charity) as a form of respect to those who did not survive the Holocaust. With your donation we will continue to teach the genera-tions to come. Through your generosity we will continue to purchase and supply candles each and every year and pledge our collective support to organizations dedicated to keeping the memory alive. ************************************************************************************************** Yes I would like to pre-order _____ Yom Hashoah Yellow Candles. ASK THE RABBI Dear Rabbi,

I have been considering the idea of converting to Judaism for over a year now. I feel that it's finally time to "get the ball rolling." I am wondering, where do I go now, what should I do? I would appreciate any help you could give me in my quest.

~Jennifer Sue

**************************************************************************************

Dear Jennifer Sue,

That is awesome news!

First of all, please note that embracing a full Jewish life when joining the Jewish family entails a deep commitment to the vast scope of Jewish law, as embodied in the Written and Oral Torahs. Please be aware that if one joins the Jewish people, one would be joining a people that has been abused and victimized and blamed for all the world's ills since nearly time began. And that in every generation there arose those who sought to wipe us off the face of the earth. And yet, we are still here, because our continued existence is testimony to the existence of G*d, to the Presence of G*d in this world and to the enduring Truth of His Covenant that He made with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Judaism holds that G*d does not require everyone to become Jewish to be considered righteous in His eyes. It is sufficient for a gentile to observe the seven Noahide Laws which G*d gave to all humanity. Christianity and Islam believe in the need to to conquer the whole world in the name of their respective faiths. We believe it is hard enough just to conquer one's impulses. Having said all that, let me state that if one is willing to take on the mantle of the commitment to the laws and values of our Holy Torah which G*d gave to Moses at Sinai, then we would certainly welcome you to our ranks. We say that the Torah was given not only to the Israelites who were present at Sinai, but to all their descendants and to all future righteous proselytes as well.

I advise you to visit your local synagogues and get to know their rabbis as a first step. Approach them to discuss the idea of conversion. If they turn you down three times, they are just doing their job. That is how we have remained "the world's slowest growing religion."

Good luck and please keep me posted.

WE ALL HAVE SIMCHAS AND NACHES IN OUR LIFE CELEBRATE AND COMMEMORATE WITH ANY OF THE FOLLOWING...

SEND WARM THOUGHTS Give Suzanne Tremper a call at 588-6148 or e-mail her at [email protected] and let someone know you’re thinking of them. For a small contribution to the Hessed Fund, Suzanne will

send a card wishing a Happy Birthday, Congratulations, Mazel Tov, Get Well or Condolences. A notice will appear in this bulletin, as well. When you call, please leave all the information

needed.

TREE OF LIFE AND MEMORIALS Add a leaf to the Tree of Life to celebrate births, birthdays, marriages, bar and bat mitzvahs, or

any other special event for a minimum contribution of $150. Remember loved ones with a Memorial Plaque at a minimum contribution of $600 for members, $850 for non-members.

Contact Suzanne Tremper at 588-6148.

ENDOWMENT FUND Hey, it’s always a great time to make a contribution. Make your check out to “Temple Israel.”

Another thought to consider, remember Temple Israel in your will. Call Herb Rosen at 424-1161 with any questions.

Honor or Remember Someone Special with a Bookplate

A bookplate can be placed in a Siddur, the weekly prayer book we use every Friday evening and Shabbat morning, or in a machzor, the prayer book which is used on the High Holidays. Remember a special occasion such as a birthday, anniversary, bnei mitzvah or any other occasion you want to note for a relative or friend. You can also place a dedication in someone’s memory. A nameplate with the donor, recipient, and occasion will be inserted. The minimum donation is $50.

Contact Herb Rosen, 424-1161, or at [email protected].

Do you need a Mi Sheberach Recited?

When you can’t make services, but would like a prayer said on behalf of someone important to you, please don’t hesitate to call the synagogue and leave a message

on the Temple answering machine for Rabbi Melman so that your prayers will be included in our services.

FROM YOUR MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE…..

we offer you a challenge!

We need everyone to help with this. Surely you know individuals and families who have no affiliation with a Synagogue.

Encourage them to become members of our Temple Israel Family!

If every family brings in one individual or family,

think of the possibilities!

At Temple events, be they regular Shabbat Services or a social occasion, introduce yourself to anyone you don’t recognize. You’ll make new friends

and assist us in enlarging our family.

YOU CAN BE PART OF OUR SUCCESS!!

For information please contact:

Sandy Magnes at 570-476-6832

or [email protected]

or Temple Israel 421-8781

Please leave a phone number so that we may return your call.
