- it’s not difficult!

Page 2: Podcasting In The Classroom

This slideshow was used for an in-service on podcasting for MS and HS faculty at International School Manila, Tuesday Jan. 6th, 2009.

The intent of the presentation was to illustrate how podcasting could be adopted as a part of the classroom environment on an ongoing basis, and what some advantages of this.

You’re not afraid to try something new. You’re happy to cooperate with other

teachers. You believe your students benefit from

writing about what they’re learning , even when you’re not grading it.

1. 10 minutes: Discussion - you decide on a name and topic for the podcast, and we sign up with a podcast host together.

2. 30 minutes: two students learn from me

how to record and edit a podcast in Audacity. how to upload the podcast to the podcast host.

3. 20 minutes: All students in class sign up with iGoogle. Everyone (including the teacher) subscribes to the podcast channel we’ve set up.

1. The two students plan & write the episode. 2. They record and edit the podcast, e.g.

during Friday lunch (in your room?). 3. They then upload it to the podcast host.4. The rest of the class automatically finds the

new episode in their iGoogle pages or even iTunes, where they can put on iPod!

5. The two students teach another pair, who will do the next episode, etc.

6. And you? You just sit back and concentrate on your teaching

Advice them as needed on their writing. Send them to me if in need of technical

help. Use the podcast as a teaching resource:

Listen in class to generate discussion? Use in your formative assessment, i.e. to gauge

students’ understanding and modify your instruction accordingly?

students like listening to each other. Diversifies learning opportunities -

students have more ways in which to demonstrate learning.

Reinforces learning, as students learn from each other.

Forms connections to the rest of the world

Year-long podcast project: 1 hour to learn podcasting, 40 hours of instructional use

i.e. MUCH BETTER time investment/learning outcome ratio
