What is an Extended Metaphor?• EXTENDED METAPHOR

• Definition: A metaphor that continues over multiple sentences, and that is sometimes extended throughout an entire work.

• Why Writers Use it: Extended metaphors allow writers to draw a larger comparison between two things or ideas. In rhetoric, they allow the audience to visualize a complex idea in a memorable way or tangible. They highlight a comparison in a more intense way than simple metaphors or similes.

• Usually A LOT of Symbolism!!! • Your poem needs to be creative, an extended

metaphor, at least 12 lines

Page 14: Poetry Analysis UsingTPCASTTPoetry Analysis UsingTPCASTT Ms. Wolf’s Language Arts Class

T is for THEME

• As you already know, theme is the general insight into life conveyed by the author through his/her work.

• It does not make a judgment.example: “Don’t do drugs” is not a theme.

• It merely states something that is true to life and the human condition.

Page 15: Poetry Analysis UsingTPCASTTPoetry Analysis UsingTPCASTT Ms. Wolf’s Language Arts Class

How do I find the THEME?

• Look at the other parts of TPCASTT.

• What insight are all of these working together to convey?

• What is the poet trying to say about life?
