What a lovely party. Thank you, Patti Messi, for hosting our
annual BBQ meeting. The food was delicious and the ambi-
ance; perfect. Terrie Bussie and Jeanne Lanquist did a terri-
fic job of planning the event. The name tags were really
special as were the cute kimono paper bags. There were so
many lovely things on the raffle table. There was some dis-
cussion regarding the method of handling the raffle. The
board will take it under consideration and look at possible
changes for next year. If you have suggestions regarding the
June meeting, please email them to me or write a note and
give it to a board member.
We have some special painting opportunities coming up. Be
sure you check out the list in the newsletter and get signed
up early. Just a reminder that you need to pay your fee so
that the teacher can plan ahead and Peggy and Karen have
an accurate count. Please make sure that you put cash in an
envelope and mark it clearly with your name.
The July meeting should be a lot of fun and we will learn a
new technique. Iris Paper Folding has so many possibilities.
The quilted look makes beautiful cards for every occasion.
They could also be used for boutiques during the holidays.
For those of you who are vacationing this next month, I hope
you have a relaxing time. We all need to get out of our daily
routine once in a while and refresh our hearts and minds.
Happy traveling.

BROCCOLI SALAD
1 lbs of bacon, fried crisp, crumbled
8 cups of broccoli florets
1 cup thinly sliced red onion
1 medium shredded carrots
1 can chopped water chestnuts
1 cup golden raisins
1/2 cup sunflower seeds
Dressing:
2 cups mayo
1 cup white sugar
6 Tablespoons of red wine vinegar
Mix together broccoli, red onion, carrots, water chest-
nuts, and raisins. Before serving, add sunflower seeds,
crumbled bacon and dressing. Toss well & serve
chilled.
Note: I brought this to the Summer Potluck in June. I
blanched the broccoli for about 2 seconds & placed the
broccoli in a bowl of water & ice. I also used Splenda
instead of white sugar. I only used about half of the
dressing.

SOMETHNG FROM CHAPTER HAPPENING from SDP
Dip your brush in refrigerated distilled water when floating your shading and highlighting. Your floats will go farther and be much smoother than they would be with tap water.
Use toothpicks for applying fine details, making tiny dots, or applying color in hard-to-reach areas of your project.
Keep the card-holder stand that comes with flower arrangements. When painting from a photo, insert the photo in the card holder and place the holder in your brush jar. This not only keeps your picture at eye level but also keeps it from getting messy with paint.
Ever been in doubt about how a certain color or stroke will look on your painting? Place a piece of clear acetate over the painting, then apply the stroke or color to the acetate. Voilà! It’s just like having a crystal ball.
When setting up your painting space, keep a bar of soap on top of a paper towel, next to your water container, for washing out your brushes as you finish using them. This saves you many trips to the sink, plus it keeps brushes clean and helps you avoid paint buildup.
Thanks to Beverly Rogers of the Sooner Decorative Artists for these helpful ideas. To share your own favorite painting tips with the members of SDP, email [email protected] for inclusion in the next edition of Chapter Happenings.

Detailing & Line Work
Use a size brush that is appropriate for the area and you. A good liner is cut to a point and with hand con-
trol several widths of lines can be achieved with a single brush. A light touch results in a thin line and
with more pressure and paint a heavier line can be achieved.
When ever using liner brush, the paint must be thinned with water to ink consistency. Load the liner
thoroughly with the ink consistency paint by dragging the hairs through the puddle and load the paint fully
into the ferrule of the brush. The brush will work as a fountain pen feeding to the point end, you will be
able to go quite a distance before reloading.
I use my pinkie or wrist as a steadying brace, stay up on the tip of the liner and pull the stroke towards
you. Pulling the stroke towards you helps to be in better control of the brush.
Keep your surface and your brush perpendicular to it, hold it as straight as possible. This allows gravity
to pull the paint onto your surface. You should achieve long, flowing lines without having to reload the
brush often. Hold the brush loosely in the middle of the handle, barely letting the tip drag the surface.
Holding the brush loosely will allow the hairs to turn and curve smoothly. Once again like in floating,
slow that liner brush down to pull the line work.
Look ahead just beyond the tip of the brush, where you want the liner to go, rather than the tip of the
brush. The brush will automatically follow along. This also helps you to paint a straighter line.
When you run out of paint and need to re-load, always go back into the line a bit, instead of starting right
where you left off. This allows for a more blended look.
