Materials needed: yarn in red, black, and white. Pom-pom maker, scissors

Start by unfolding the arms to the pom-pom maker and winding white around one side.

Wind around the arm several times to make a “layer” from left to right.

Continue going back and forth, making more and more “layers” until the arm is almost full.

Cut the white and start a layer of black. Make 1-2 layers of black until most of the white is no longer showing. You can be more generous with the black than this!

With the other arm, start with red. Continue going back and forth, making more and more “layers” until the arm is almost full.

Cut the red and start with the black again. Make 1-2 layers of black until most of the white is no longer showing.

Put the arms back together. Using a pair of scissors, cut along the groove all the way around, making sure to get all of the strands.

Here’s what cutting the strands should look like. Here is the yarn cut all the way around.

Take a string, preferably in your main hat color, wrap it around the groove, and tie it tightly in a knot. This will hold all the strands together.

The knot after being tied. You should double-knot it to keep it tight.

Unfold the arms of the pom-pom maker. Separate the two arms of the pom-pom maker to get your pom-pom.

To get the pom-pom to face horizontally, tie another double-knot around the pom-pom using the long strands, placing the knot where you want the bottom of the pom-pom to be. Attach the pom-pom to the hat.!!To reinforce the pom-pom to the hat, bring the long strands back up through the hat and tie a tight knot around the pom-pom, perpendicular to where the long strands are already tied around the pom-pom. Cut the long strands short enough to hide in the pom-pom.

Fluff it out and mess with it, until you are happy. Trim any uneven strands. Notice how the long strands are to the side (the pom-pom is currently sideways)?

FINISHED!
