PREPARATIONSand and seal the Wood Round with DecoArt Multi Purpose Sealer. Once this is dry wipe away any sand-

ing dust with the Tack Cloth. Basecoat the front of the piece with two coats of gesso using the sponge brushes. Sand lightly between coats. Next basecoat with one coat of Slate Grey. This does not have to be fully covered. Sand lightly again. Transfer the pattern lines with Grey Graphite paper. At the end fi nish with several coats of Dura Clear Satin Varnish. Basecoat with two coats of Slate Grey, apply your pattern with Grey Graphite.

Note from the Artist: This piece is not hard to do; however, white objects are harder to paint. If you were to paint a pure white subject with the color white you would not see it. You may notice a build-up of paint on my sample; I kept going over and over it trying to put more color into it. For those of you that fl oat (I don’t) there are areas that would work very well for fl oating rather than building up large amounts of paint. I have enclosed a worksheet. Please follow it carefully. I have put three colors on the left side, these are the three color mixes I used most often.

PAINTING INSTRUCTIONSEyes, Nose, and MouthPaint the eyes, nose, and mouth with Lamp Black. Add the dash and dot with Slate Grey. This is shown on the worksheet. Use a small round or liner brush. Paint the nose Lamp Black. Paint the dash with the Blue Mix then follow with a brighter highlight on the center with Warm White. Fill in the mouth with Lamp Black, shadow on the bottom of the nose with Slate Grey and a touch of Lamp Black. I added a touch of Traditional Burnt Umber above the nose as seen on the worksheet, the Purple Mix on the right side of the nose and the Blue Mix on the left side. Add some longer hairs on the bottom of the mouth (chin area) using the horizontal part of the 1/4 inch comb brush with Warm White.

Basing in Light and Dark AreasMake sure before you base in the bear you let a little of the pattern lines show. Base the right side of the bear with the Purple Mix and the light side with the Blue Mix. It is fi ne if some of the Slate Grey basecoat shows through. Remember to pay close attention to the natural growth direction and length of the hairs on the bear. Let the base color tack up a bit and start adding individual clumps of hair with the rake brush. On the right side of the face I used lighter shades of the Purple Mix + Warm White and on the left side I added Warm White to the Blue Mix. As you can see

I have a build-up of paint although that was not my intention. I sanded between coats and kept layering. I guess I forgot I was not painting on a canvas : I added Light Buttermilk to the right side and Warm White to the left side. I added touches of Turquoise with Warm White mainly on the left side and just a touch on the right side. I kept layering individual hairs and defi ned the white folds with Warm White on both sides of the Polar bear. I used the fl at of the 1/4 inch Comb Brush for the shorter folds on the face and the chisel edge of the 1/2 inch brush for the longer hairs on the shoulder area.

White Patches Around the EyesWatch the stroke direction very carefully and using the ¼ inch rake start pulling individual White hair strokes in toward the edges of the patches. Add touches of the Blue Mix, Purple Mix with Warm White. Add just a touch of Traditional Burnt Umber in the corners of the eye. Use touches of Buttermilk to the left side.

EarsBase in the ears with Lamp Black. On the tops of the ears I used heavier white paint and pulled individual hairs with a 1/4 inch Comb brush. To put the hairs inside the ears, take the chisel edge of the 1/4 inch Comb brush and stroke in the correct direction. Follow the sample.

ClawsI did not make detailed claws on this project, only an indication. Follow the worksheet “Indication of Claws”. Add a Black curved lines for the claws and add Warm White to the center of the claws. Cover them with hair folds using the 1/2 inch Comb Brush with downward strokes and at an angle.

Rock in frontThere is a rock foundation that the polar bear is laying on. I debated between Slate Grey or Traditional Burnt Umber. I ended up trying both colors but chose the brown to match the edges of the wood round. I just color booked since in with a #8 fl at brush and highlight-ed it in the center with a dash of Warm White while the Traditional Burnt Umber was still wet. Underneath the claws of the bear shadow with Wedgewood Blue.

FINISHINGAllow the wood round to dry. Repeat steps as neces-sary and varnish. Thanks for allowing me to share this piece with you.
