So what’s next?
“Understanding the behaviors and energetic costs of polar bear movement strategies will provide insight into the specific mechanisms by which polar bears are being affected by climate change. These data will be used to inform an updated model forecasting the abundance of global polar bear populations under scenarios of climate change.”
P.I. Anthony Pagano, USGS

Swim chamber?
“To better understand polar bear habitat use and improve projections of the effects of climate change on global polar bear populations, quantitative data on polar bear energetic rates are greatly needed. The results from this work will provide the first measurements of the energetic costs of swimming in polar bears.”
P.I. Anthony Pagano, USGS

Diversity in Contracting
Positive results for the region: • Helps expand economic opportunities • Builds capacity of local MWESB firms • Increases competition and adds different perspectives
Zoo Bond Goal: 15% of contract value to MWESB firms

Lessons Learned in Diversity Contracting
• Invest in pre-bid outreach • Break bid packages down • Encourage mentorships • Recognize competitive market • Limit comparison with other agencies • Provide assistance in MWESB certification • Contractors assist with bonding and payment • Build relationships
