3. Press SET once (zero is displayed and presettime is cancelled).

4. Press SET steadily until the new time isdisplayed.

Check the Lighten/Darken control on thecameraIt should be set to normal as shown (14) exceptin certain lighting (see “To take bright outdoordaylight pictures”) and in hot and cold weatherwith color film (see film instructions). Also, useit to retake a picture that is too light or too dark. Each mark represents 1/3 stop change in expo-sure. When you are using the ProFlash, use theLighten/Darken switch on the flash unit instead(see “To take pictures with the ProFlash”).

Set the film selector (15)When using color film or Type 665 film, set it to80. When using black and white 3000 speed film, set it to 3000 for daylight and flashcube pictures,3000ER for ProFlash pictures at close andmedium range, and to 80 for ProFlash pictures ofdistant subjects. See “Picture-taking guide” forflash ranges.

Also, you can take black-and-white picturesindoors by using available light from the sceneand setting the film selector to 3000ER; fordetails, see “To take indoor pictures withoutflash.”

Set the distance scale (16)Measure or estimate the distance from thecamera lens to your subject. Turn the lens ringuntil the distance (in feet or meters) is oppositethe symbol () above the lens. Be sure yoursubject is within the range shown in the “Picture-taking guide” for your picture-taking situation.

To take bright outdoor daylight picturesStand so the sunlight comes from behind you orfrom the side. Watch the background. When thelight on the background is much brighter than thelight on your subject, your subject will be too darkin the finished picture. In these conditions, set theLighten/Darken control on the camera towardLighten and take the picture. When the back-ground is much darker than your subject, yoursubject will be too light in the picture. Set thecontrol toward Darken before taking thepicture.

1. Set the film selector to 80 for color film (andType 665 film) or to 3000 for black and white3000 speed film.

2. ProPack System: Be sure the flash unit isswitched off. Both cameras: Be sure there is noflashcube in the flashcube socket.

3. Once you have set the distance scale andframed your subject, press the shutter releaseas described.

To take indoor pictures without flashYour camera has an extended range (ER) shutterthat lets you take black-and-white pictureswithout flash indoors by using available light inthe scene. (If there is not sufficient light in thescene, use flash.)

1. Load the camera with Type 87, 107, 107C or667 black-and-white film.

2. Set the film selector to 3000ER, and rely on theexisting light from the scene. Indoors the lightsource should be high overhead, behind you orto your side. Avoid bright lights facing the cam-era. For best results, use a tripod.

3. ProPack System: Be sure the flash unit isswitched off. Both cameras: Be sure there is noflashcube in the flashcube socket.

4. Once you have set the distance scale andframed your subject, press the shutter releaseas described.

To take flashcube picturesInsert a Hi-Power or regular flashcube into theflashcube socket on the camera (19), and turn itclockwise as far as it will go. After four flashes, the cube will stop at a 45 degree angle. Partiallyused cubes should be wound, removed, andreinserted so a used bulb faces down and a freshone forward. Before closing the camera, removethe flashcube. The flash range for Hi-Powercubes is 4-12 ft. (1.2-3.7m) and for regular cubesis 4-8 ft. (1.2-2.4m); be sure your subject is withinthose ranges. Set the film selector to 3000 for3000 speed film and to 80 for 80 speed film.

To take pictures with the ProFlash(ProPack System only)For best results, place your subject near a light-colored background, if possible. When photo-graphing more than one subject, place eachsubject about the same distance from the cameraso they all will be lit evenly by the flash.

1. Turn on the flash unit (20A). The green LED willlight when the flash is fully charged.

2. Be sure the film selector on the camera iscorrectly set for your picture-taking situation.Note: For distant subjects (50-75 ft./15.2-22.9m)at night, you must use 3000 speed film and setthe film selector to 80. Color film cannot be usedfor flash pictures beyond approximately 12 ft.(3.7m).

3. Be sure the Lighten/Darken switch on theProFlash is set to normal as shown (20B). Use itto lighten ( ) or darken () a picture that is toodark or too light. Also, use it in hot or cold weatherwith color film (see film instructions). Each set-ting will change exposure by 1/2 stop. The L/Dcontrol on the camera does not function forelectronic flash pictures.

4. Make sure the ready light (20C) is lit, indicatingthe flash is fully charged. Once you have set thedistance scale and framed your subject, pressthe shutter release as described.

5. After you take a picture, the ready light will goout for a few to several seconds* to indicate thatthe flash is charging. (If the flash takes more than30 seconds to charge, it is time to replace thebatteries in the flash unit; see instructions under“Maintenance.”) When the ready light comes on,you can take another flash picture. If you don’tplan to take another flash picture right away, turnoff the unit to minimize battery drain. Alwaysturn off the flash unit when not in use.

Note: To help prevent battery drain, the flashunit will automatically shut off after about threeminutes. The switch will still be on, but the readylight will not be lit. To take another flash picture, move the Off/On (0/1) switch to off then on again.(If you neglect to do this, the flash will fire but yourpicture may be too dark.)

6. If you are using black and white 3000 speedfilm and your next picture is a bright outdoor(nonflash) picture, be sure to change the filmselector to 3000.

Press the shutter releaseYou must keep the camera steady as you takethe picture. Get a firm grip with your left hand.Keeping your right thumb in line with the shutterrelease, place it under the front of the camera asshown (21). Slowly press the shutter release withyour right forefinger. At the same time, press upwith your thumb to help keep the camera steady.Hold the shutter release down for at least onesecond.

White specks: Yellow tab pulled too fast.

Caution

The Polaroid photographic process uses acaustic jelly which is safely packed inside sealedcontainers within the film pack. If accidentallyyou should get some of this jelly on your skin, wipe it off immediately. To avoid an alkali burn, wash the area with plenty of water as soon aspossible. It is particularly important to keepthe jelly away from eyes and mouth. Keepdiscarded materials out of reach of children andanimals, and out of contact with clothing andfurniture, as discarded materials still containsome jelly.

To clean the rollersLift the two metal loops as shown (28) andremove the rollers. (The serial number is locatedbeneath the rollers.) To clean them, use a clothdampened with water (29). Never scrape therollers with anything metallic, nor with yourfingernail; do not attempt to disassemble therollers. Blow out any dust in the back of thecamera. Clean slots (30A) and (30B) if neces-sary. Replace the rollers.

To test the camera batteriesWithout film or electronic flash connected, set thefilm selector to 80. Cover the electric eye withyour finger and aim the camera at a light (not thesun). Press and hold down the shutter release. You will hear a click. Uncover the electric eye.You will hear a second click if the batteries aregood.

To change the camera batteries (at leastyearly)With the camera’s front cover closed, open thecamera back. Pull down on the fingergrip (31A)and remove the old batteries. Using two newbatteries (size AA, 1.5V alkaline), point the – endof the left battery and the + end of the rightbattery toward the top of the camera, as shownon the battery holder (32A). Insert each batterybetween the metal contacts. Close and latch thefingergrip.

To change the ProFlash batteries(ProPack System only)If the flash takes more than 30 seconds tocharge, replace the batteries with four newbatteries (size AA, 1.5V alkaline) as describedunder “Load the batteries into the ProFlash.”Rechargeable 1.2V nickel-cadmium batteriesalso can be used.

ProFlash battery life: To prevent draining thebatteries, always turn off the ProFlash when notin use. (To help prevent battery drain, the flashunit will automatically shut off after about threeminutes.) To maximize battery life, turn off theelectronic flash immediately after taking a flashpicture, before it has a chance to recharge.

To change the digital timer batteriesIf the display or tones fade, or the timer stopsfunctioning, open the battery cover and replacethe batteries with two new batteries (GP-89A orequivalent, 1.5V), positioned as shown (33).Replace the cover. To restore the display, pressSET and START simultaneously.

Storage of the ProFlash(ProPack System only)If you are storing the unit for an extended period, remove the batteries and store them separately. This will prevent possible damage to the unitfrom leaking batteries. Protect the flash unit frommoisture and from extreme heat and cold. Stor-age in extreme temperatures can shorten batterylife. Keep the batteries and battery contactsclean.

To rethread the neckstrapIf you remove the neckstrap, be sure to thread itas shown in the illustration (34) when replacingit on the camera. It is particularly important tothread it as shown when the Polaroid ProFlashis attached to the camera.
