An enduring lifeas we approach the end of our 40th year, we want to remember James Kevin meara who passed away on Sunday, October 31 after a recurring bout of illness. He was the father to club member James meara and father-in-law to Jenny. Our condolences. We trust he’s gone to a far better place. It reminds us that we are all just passing through, and our days are all numbered. We leave behind everything. all our possessions will go to someone else. It’s a good thing to pause every now and then to take stock of where we are individually, our values and our priorities. It’s at those times we usually acknowledge the lasting value of friendships and family relationships over careers, possessions and reputations.as a club of like-minded individuals, we want to enjoy each other’s company, share common values, and help and support each other. the cars, trucks, bikes and shed clutter pale a little into the background — as they should. When people regard this club, I’d like to think they recall a club with those kind of values. It’s more about the people, and the fun times we’ve all shared together. talking to some of the older, long-standing club members, they certainly enthuse along those lines. It’s been a good club over the years. We all want those values to remain — and to grow and develop more. and they will. as I look around the club meetings, there’s a lot to like, and I don’t mean the furnishings or equipment. When I first became president, Pat murphy reminded me that he probably wouldn’t agree with me on everything. I’m sure he won’t be the only one. I haven’t agreed with every decision that’s been made either. But the key to fully enjoying club life is not getting our knickers in a twist over such trivial matters. the big matters, the really important ones, are helping and supporting each other — and staying friends and comrades-in-arms because we all enjoy our common interests. We can all disagree strongly with each other on how things should be done, but remain firm friends and supportive mates at the same time. next year we’re going to be calling again for feedback and ideas from all club members on all sorts of club activities: rallies, places to visit, events to support, club meetings etc.I’m very keen to have more women turn up and get involved at club meetings, though we have to remind them that it’s still about ‘old cars’ you know. though I’m open to suggestions...the end of the year is upon us and we’re about to start our second 40 year period. What exciting developments will the future bring?See you at the next meeting.

Welcome gentlemen!

Jeff and ann cox are heading for Rockhampton in mid november for their son’s wedding on the 20th, travelling in their 1929 Whippet via mundubbra. the Whippet is the star as it’s also the wedding car.

Hi everyone.Once again we are getting ready for our next swap on Friday, February 4 and Saturday, February 5, 2011.It is at this time of the year that we ask for your help during our swap.Whether you are on the gates, turnstiles, gate control, car display, money van, or helping denise with bookings or even on the P.a. System — we need your help.more importantly it is at this special club event that we are able to showcase what a great club we are to outsiders and attract more members.I urge you in whatever small way you can, please get involved with your fellow club members — and of course we mean all the wives and family members too.If you are not able to help work-wise because of health reasons etc, then get involved by being one of our vIP ambassadors. all you have to do is to just come and go as you please and just wave the flag for our club. You are important to us and a valued member of our club family. If for any reason you are unable to assist us at this event then please let us know also and then you won’t have me or any committee member pestering you.at our next club meetings we will be passing around our club roster list for you to add your name.If you are unable to attend our club meetings then please contact me either by email, mail, or just give me a call on 0400 200 090.

An.update.on.the.Swapthings are progressing very well towards our 2011 swap with all committee members working towards achieving our goal of having a very successful and enjoyable swap meet.We have negotiated successfully with the toowoomba

Main.changes.for.next.year.are;1. We will be using security wrist bands as pass outs for

public, site holders, and all volunteer/club workers. these will be in different colours.

2. We will have the model train club opening up with displays.3. also the wood crafters will be showing their skills.4. a coloured map finder will be given out to all site holders

and the public.5. a new pavilion opened just for motorbikes/parts.6. the outer ring of the main arena will be kept for our veteran/

vintage/classic car display. So get your car ready. 7. vIP club ambassadors. We need all club members who are

unable to work at our swap because of health reasons etc, to be part of our team of very visible club members. You come and go as you like so put your name down on the list.

We would like every club member and their family involved in our swap.We will be supplying tou all with a special hat (at no cost to you) and if you wear your club shirts then people will get to know more about how great a club we do have.Be part of the greatest show in toowoomba next Feb. Put your name on the list and bring to the next meeting or ring me up, or just mail it in.I will be modelling a different coloured shirt at the next meeting — so don’t miss out. See you there.

Brian and Dell Timms’ regular rally car is their 1976 left hand drive AMX Pacer. Not too many on Aussie roads.

Avril Grice regally awaits her chauffeur in the front seat of their elegant Armstrong Siddeley.

Another very familiar sight at club runs and rallies is the Meara chariot: James and Jenny’s 1928 Essex, with which he and shotgun mechanic offsider Eliza won first place in the Warren Klein Memorial Rally quiz.

Clyde and Maree Baker’s war-time jeep in the club’s parking lot. They took second place in the quiz.

Collen Klein’s relatively recent aquisition, his pale green 1929 Essex Coach, driven by his girlfriend Kylie. Go girl. The 1920s was a time of rapid change in people’s expectations, and women were taking to driving with great flair, showing that what was previously thought only possible by men, was not so. In this club we have a number of competent female vintage car drivers. Drat.

Rally reportLAMA.RALLY:.OCTOBER.2.&.3the gatton club always go to a lot of trouble to organise a good rally. On the Saturday they took us to emu gully near the Helidon Spa. this facility is normally used as a kids camp but down the back, there is an aircraft hangar where terry Kronk builds replica aircraft. there is also a lengthy runway which must be roughly parallel to the Warrego Highway. When we met terry, he was dressed in a german flying officer‘s uniform as he was about to fly his Focke-Wulf to the Oakey air show. even though the original aircraft design was german, this ¾ size replica was fitted with a Russian radial engine. Beside the Focke-Wulf was a mustang which featured a chev 350 v8. this engine is much cheaper and easier to obtain and as it has a coil for each cylinder, it doesn’t require any special changes such as twin ignition. even the sump can be left as standard. In another part of the hangar was a Spitfire, a bren gun carrier, a WWII army truck and a pair of v12 aircraft engines for a future project.Outside were five or six military tanks of different varieties. Before we left, terry flew the Focke-Wulf and completed some aerial acrobatics. On the Sunday, we visited a very interesting museum at lockrose. the owner showed a number of films about early motor racing as well as a lap or two of the Pittsworth sprints from the driving position of his racing car.I took my XP Falcon to gatton on both days of the rally and travelled home on Saturday evening rather than staying in a motel. On Saturday afternoon, we returned via Flagstone creek and on Sunday we drove up the main range. I filled the tank with Premium unleaded before leaving and was amazed at the performance on both gradients.

LOURDES.HOME:.Friday,.October.15a few of us were able to visit this facility for a mini fete and then took some of the residents for a lap around the block.thanks to those members who were able to help out.

WARREN.KLEIN.MEMORIAL.RALLY.

Sunday,.October.24this rally was moved to a week after the proposed date and it was amazing how much the weather had changed over the week from a dismal rainy day to a rather warm, sunny, wonderful day for a drive in the country. On the way to crow’s nest we stopped for morning tea at a park in goombungee. We normally stop in the main street but this park was far better.the run was organised by Karen Klein who drove her lovely 1928 Oakland. Her brother collen was in his ex-Bill Richard’s essex, another very desirable vintage sedan and he also brought out the 28 erskine that Warren had purchased from a museum in tasmania. We enjoyed lunch at Holland’s Winery located on the Blackbutt road just north of crow’s nest. Here many of the members sampled and purchased some of the wines available.this competitive rally featured a quiz on cars used in films and tv.

Placegetters were: 1st James and eliza meara 1928 essex 2nd clyde and maree Baker 1944 Jeep 3rd arthur Fowler 1948 Ford Pilot 4th Family members 1927 erskine Hard luck thelma Hoffmann 1938 Packard

BRIAN’S BOOK LAUNCH

Saturday,.November.6..at.10am.at.the.clubhouse

members are requested to attend the official launch of the Brian timms/John clements book on the history of garages in toowoomba. Brian has worked on this project for 4 or 5 years and the finished product is a credit to him. Please support Brian by attending the book launch and morning tea. Old cars are most welcome, especially as part of the motoring memorabilia display.

MAIN.ROADS.HERITAGE.MUSEUM:..November.6.at.1:30pmafter the book launch, members are invited to attend an exhibition of detroit concept cars at the museum in the airport precinct. maybe we could get some lunch by driving through one of the takeaway joints in the area.the exhibition incorporates nine 1/4 scale futuristic car models into current centre displays and offers an interesting contrast between past and future.

HARVEST.RALLY:..Sunday,.November.14.at.9:00amthis is the club’s oldest rally and is worthy of very good support. We plan to travel to mt tyson for morning tea and then conduct a regularity trial in the area.this type of event is quite common in racing circles but it is not our intention to drive any faster than normal. to participate in such an event, members are able to drive around a circuit to become familiar with it. then they have to drive around twice more and each lap is timed. the driver with the least difference in their times is the winner. entrants will be encouraged not to use watches, phones etc and purely use the vehicle’s speedometer to try and record similar speeds each time.I have never organised such an event but the regularity idea sounds workable and fits in with our aim of competition.

John Clements and Brian Timms

I don’t have a suitable timing device and appeal to any clubmember who may be able to help.I thought we might finish the day with a pub lunch at Pittsworth and return to toowoomba via Felton.

CHRISTMAS.RALLY:.Sunday,.November.28there will be a short drive before the lunch. Please meet at the club at 9:00am and bring morning tea.lunch will be back at the clubrooms and supplied by the club, but please bring a plate of ‘christmas goodies’ to share for dessert afterwards. must have names and $10 fully refundable deposit at the november meeting. Phone ann cox on 4635 4481.

DECEMBERas the christmas rally has been moved forward this year, there is no run planned for december but perhaps something to look at christmas lights or a similar event could be planned. Is there anyone prepared to organise such an event?

third place goes to arthur Fowler in his 1948 Ford Pilot, presented by Karen Klein.

Fourth place happily went to Klein family members who piloted collen’s 1927 erskine.

Thelma Hoffmann is all smiles after winning the Hard Luck prize... so the packet of tissues weren’t needed in the end.

Picnicking in Goombungee: the Handley’s Falcon ute and the Waites Model A Ford.

A much nicer setting for morning tea at Goombungee.

The man who owns these sandled feet, poking out the end of yellow trousers, has broad shoulders. We rib him about his German car, his pommy accent, his brightly coloured shirts, and his strange dress sense, but we never rib him about the fact he’s taken on the Swap Manager’s role. For that, we love him dearly and are fully prepared to put up with all sorts of weird behaviour.

Organiser Extraordinaire: Karen Klein, pictured with her 1927 Oakland, has put together another excellent rally in her father’s and founding club member’s honour. Well done Karen, and thanks again.

George Wilkinson and Allan Hoffmann discuss the ills of the world, and how easily they can be fixed with a can of WD40, a small shifter spanner, and a role of thread tape.

Episode.3.“1958.FC.Holden”my friend Paul had been driving the Fc around for a couple of years and when he offered to swap for my motorcycle I jumped at the chance. the Fc did need some repairs — the gearbox had blown first gear so a new gearbox was needed. Other than that it needed a front mud guard replaced from a prang he had. So I went ahead with the swap, and with a little help from friends I was soon driving around in the city in style. the car had been modified — it had a 161 motor — the motor was so reliable and never broke down. It also had the front end from a HR fitted giving the luxury of power-boosted disc brakes — what today would be termed a Retro modern. So it not only went like lightning it also stopped better then most new cars of the time. the huge bench seats were very comfortable and there was leg room aplenty for all, even in the back seat. the driving position was very upright and it had a huge steering wheel with a big chrome and red dome in the center for the horn. the dash was plain really, only a fuel gauge and speedo, with a light for the oil and another for the temperature and ones for the blinkers and high beam. Originaly it had a 3 speed on the column but when they fitted the new gearbox it became a floor shift. It had mag wheels with ta radials so it gripped the road well. the bad things were that it had vacuum wipers, and used to leak water into the cabin when it rained.I drove many a mile in the Fc and it never had any breakdowns until the clutch started slipping, so it was back to the repair shop for a new clutch. now I was ready for a big adventure and had plans to go on a working holiday, touring the country and working on farms. It was not to happen though — on a night drive in wet weather I failed to notice a car stopped on a corner, and hit the car with force. lucky I was slowing down for the corner. the vacuum wipers were at fault here, vacuum wipers don’t work when you are slowing down and the rain was quite heavy. So another driving lesson was learned by experience — a tough one. my poor Fc was injured and the car I hit was to cost lots of money to fix — it would have to be a new Holden van wouldn’t it. ah well, such is life. after many months I paid for the repairs on the van and had the Fc fixed, but it was never the same after that accident. Strangly enough it was damaged in the same front guard that had been replaced when I purchased the Fc. So with my mother’s encouragement I sold the Fc and used the money to by a eH Holden like my dad had.

James laird found these pics on the internet relating to women drivers. Far be it from us to publish them or have a laugh at women driver’s expense. that wouldn’t be appropriate.

“How do we know you drove off from the servo without paying? Just intuitive, M’am”

“Hi honey, I’ve hit the speed bump again.”

“Men! Now he tells me he said ‘Dive on board’.”

“What? It’s a four wheel drive isn’t it? ”The motorcycle helmet for women who really do have eyes in the back of their head, or neck, or wherever.

dear editor,I cannot tell how sad I am but on the other hand how elated.I am elated because the Ford camp, with only two cars. defeated the rest.my a and I think it was lyle Handley’s Xt were in the winning Ford team.the opposition was Kevin mcgrath’s 7 litre austin, (not engine but cabin size) and a visitor’s eK!! (Jim Wiltshire - Ed)Only challenge was John mcPhail’s threat to bring in his 26 chev.

From my scoring sheet he could beat us Ford people.Only problem is that he will need at least 3 hours to drive the chev the 40ks (25 miles) and so would have to leave the meeting early to be home by midnight, or stay overnight somewhere!!!!!!So, Ford people, need your attendance, anything over 30 years old.as for the rest, if John can bring the chev that far he deserves your support.Bring ‘em out!

Graham Allum.
