political channels-within-youth-audience
DESCRIPTION
Information and the discourse of meanings it creates determines how we think, who we are and how we behave. Our understanding and the norms we accept form the „regimes of truth“ that become the basis on which society is built (M. Foucault, 1980; M. Castells, 2007). Therefore „communication and information have been fundamental sources of power and counter-power, of domination and social change“ (M. Castells, 2007). Then the ability of political agents to balance the forces of power greatly depends on the ability to effectively participate in this discourse and to adapt to the forms of communicative tools available. Yet many researchers tend to worry about the diminishing forms of counter-power that were formed and therefore suitable for power constellations of earlier periods (R. D. Putnam, T. Skocpol, 2003). The group of greatest concern is youth, yet there are but a few researches into how the communicative field influences the way young people understand politics and themselves within this field.TRANSCRIPT

New political actors
Need for new counter-power
Citizenship: concern for youth „apathy“
ProblemA common conception of youth as politically apathetic prevails despite the fact that this notion is derived from evaluating political participation that is no longer relevant to new power constellations. Regardless of the great influence that the communicative field sheds on our understanding, there were but a few attempts to understand it’s relation to youth’s notions of „politics“ – the field that they are expected to be engaged with.

AimDescribe the communicative fields where notions of „politics“ are derived from and to understand what communicative channels have influence on these different notions
Tasks1. Asses what channels constitute youth’s political info field; 2. Identify the notions of „politics“ present within youth groups; 3. Analyze if different notions correlate with information channels
of these groups; 4. Assess if these constellations correlate with interest in politics,
knowledge, positive / negative attitude towards their politics
