The wonderfully renovated building of the City Credit Company at Pomorska 21 won the competition for the Best Interior of the Year 2011 in Łódź.[Gazeta Wyborcza]
Preservation offi cers agree that the renovation of the dilapidated building of the City Credit Company has been one of the best and most important renovations of a historic building in Łódź over the past 20 years.[Polska Dziennik Łódzki, Wiesław Pierzchała]
The renovated assembly room of the palace formerly housing the City Credit Company at Pomorska street makes a powerful impression. On the ceiling there are old, fabulously colourful polychromes saved from destruction, and the richly decorated stuccos on the walls have regained their former splendour. It is hard to believe that only two years ago the dilapidating room looked a pitiful mess. Fortunately, it is all in the past now, and currently in Łodź this beautifully renovated room can be matched only by its equivalent in Izreal Poznanski’s palace.[Polska Dziennik Łódzki, Wiesław Pierzchała]

Historic view
The Neo-Renaissance building at Pomorska
21 was built over the years 1878-1882. It was
designed by Hilary Majewski, one of the most
renowned architects in Łódź, creator of
several magnifi cent and elegant buildings
in the city.
The splendid façade is decorated with
pilasters, half-columns, cornices, bas-reliefs
and female sculptures, allegories of industry
and trade, symbolising the fast-developing
industrial Łodź of the time. The pediment
above the clock is embellished with the
Credit Company’s maxim: Viribus unitis
(we act together). The unique attention to
detail, which is evident at fi rst glance, is
characteristic of the entire edifi ce.
— 5 —
History of the
building
The history of the building is closely related to
the activities of the City Credit Company in Łódź.
It was a private fi nancial institution established
in 1872 by a group of local entrepreneurs.
It became the second organisation of this kind
in the then Kingdom of Poland (the fi rst had
been founded in Warsaw). The main objective
of the Credit Company was to grant long-term
loans secured by mortgaged properties, which
facilitated further investment.Meeting of the Supervisory Committee
— 6 —
At that time, the establishment of the Credit Company, and with it a source
of credit for urban properties, proved invaluable. Financial market was limited,
a possibility to receive a government loan was virtually non-existent, private
capital charged higher and higher interest rate.
The functioning of the Credit Company had not been limited by any dates.
That indefi nite existence prospect, hitherto unknown, was crucial. It gave the new
institution a sense of confi dence. From the very beginning the Credit Company
lacked external fi nancing, either in the form of an open and slowly repaid loans
or share capital. According to the law the founders of the Credit Company had the
right to obtain a loan to cover their initial needs. However, they believed that for
the good of the institution it was not advisable to start its activities burdened with
debt. They aspired to cover all preliminary expenses out of their own funds.
The members of the City Credit Company came from among the property owners
mortgaged by the Company. Membership would begin at the moment of obtaining
a loan in the Company or purchasing a property with such a mortgage. When the
loan along with all additional due payments had been paid up or the mortgaged
property had been sold the membership would expire. Director’s offi ce
— 7 —
The activities of the Company greatly infl uenced the growth of
construction business in Łódź. Up until 1939, thousands of
building investments in the city benefi ted from credit
assistance of this institution. The system of building valuation
in mortgaging process promoted raising the standard of
technical and artistic aspects of the erected buildings.
The building at Pomorska 21 was the headquarters of the
Company. It was praised as more elegant than the one housing
the City Credit Company in Warsaw.
The Company continued its operations until 1949. The building
at Pomorska 21 was later nationalised. Throughout several years
after World War II it housed the headquarters of the Red Army.
Then the building was handed over to the Medical School, which
used it for its Dentistry Department.
Preservation condition at the beginning of 2008
— 8 —
In 1996 the building became private property, but
remained unused. Until 2007 it changed hands twice.
The technical condition of the building at Pomorska
21 gradually deteriorated due to the lack of aesthetic
sensitivity of the post-war users, long-term neglect in
conservation, enforcement of an inappropriate utility
function, and lack of investment and renovation on
the part of its private owners.
That situation persisted until 2007 when Fenix
Group bought the dilapidated building and began its
restoration process.

Large companies that value their brand prestige have
always paid special attention to interior design in
their headquarters and branch offi ces. The offi ce and
utility areas should inspire trust. Clients appreciate
a warm welcome and being served in comfortable
surroundings. Staff also takes pride and satisfaction
in working in magnifi cent rooms. Traditional
interiors remain timeless. They are an indication of
stability, longevity, credibility, wisdom and prestige.
The most captivating designs of offi ce and public
utility buildings created by talented architects
come from the mid 19th century. Companies which
established their position in that era preserve their
architectural and historic heritage today. Exceptional
buildings having undergone renovation enhance
urban landscape in a unique way.Assembly hall and a conference room in a bank headquarters –

The past andthe present
During the comprehensive renovation of the building, its
the original look has been restored, including the colours.
The details which had been envisaged in the original design
but eventually abandoned in the 19th century, could be
brought back today. The previous interior layout has been
restored, polychromes and stuccoes reconstructed, all the
mod cons replaced and modern amenities installed.
The building has become one of the trendiest place for
organising elegant galas, exhibition openings, festivals, and
wedding receptions. In 2011 the property Pomorska 21. The
Headquarters of the Credit Company was named the Best Interior of the Year 2011 in Łódź.

Renovation
The renovation process aimed at restoring the building’s former splendour lasted over three
and a half years.

Main area. Lobbies of the 1st and 2nd fl oor
The main area of the building is taken by spacious, square-
shaped lobbies of the 1st and 2nd fl oors. Attention is drawn
to ceilings supported by columns and pilasters. Between
pilasters there are high, semi-circular closed arches housing
windows and doors boasting original woodwork from the
epoch.
The 1st fl oor lobby is connected with the entrance hall via
symmetrically positioned elegant main staircases, well
lit with daylight. White marble mirror stairs have metal
decorative bannisters. Landings are fl anked by splendid bas
reliefs of female fi gures.

Assembly Room
The Assembly Room on the 1st fl oor is the biggest and the most
elegant room in the entire building. Its considerable height is
highlighted by a richly decorated cornice dividing the walls into
two storeys.
The most striking decoration in this room is the painted
and stuccoed ceiling. Its central part is a circular painting of
an allegorical scene taking place in the clouds. A woman in
sumptuous regal attire is fl anked by two other female fi gures,
one holding a bundle and a caduceus, and the other clasping
a distaff . The picture is complemented by cherubs supporting
a mock-up resembling the building of the Credit Company,
and a cupid holding a cornucopia.

Management Conference Room and Front Room
Originally, the ground fl oor housed the offi ce and fi nancial
rooms. The front portion contained the Archive and the
Supervisory Committee Room. The wings housed the
Administrative Offi ce, the Director’s Offi ce and Accounts
Department.
Through glass arches the entrance hall leads straight to the
pillared Front Room, which in turn is connected to the former
Management Conference Room. Alongside the whole of the main
axis of the building parallel design can be traced for wall division
(pilasters, semi-circular arches, windows and doors),
ceiling structure and decorations (panels) and the fl oor layout
(multi-colour terrazzo tiles).
