A politically correct world has also assigned evil to the distant past. Acts of evil no longer seem to happen anymore. Calling something an evil act is too simple an explanation today. Its use reflects a time when we were limited in our understanding of psychology and the sciences. Now we have realised that we have hate crimes, terrorism, racism, sexism, paedophilia, rape, discrimination, chance and simple indifference, to account for most of the undesirable things that happen in the world today. Consequently, we tend to play-up our ability to address situations of so called evil acts, and down-play any notion of there being an evil power alive and active in the world today. We also play-up the God of love and compassion, and down-play a God who is wrathfully engaged in battle against evil. An understanding of evil, hell, death, sin and Satan emerge slowly through scripture, as does an understanding of God. Ultimately these two forces collided at the crucifixion of Jesus/God. The God/Man places himself in the most deprived, hopeless, evil and desperate place imaginable by the powers of that time i.e. a Roman crucifixion, in order to confront the depths of evil. Evil and death are overcome in this cosmic struggle. At the battles conclusion, a promise is made that a new creation is now available for all, and that in the future another ultimate showdown will occur to bring everything to fulfilment. At that time a wrathful God will confront evil in its many forms and judge how humanity manifests it individually and collectively. In early scriptures, death was the end of everything. Once you died you descended to Sheol and had no further contact with humanity or God. It was a place of nothingness. You were cut off from everything. You did not end up there because you had been good or bad, but because you were dead. How you had lived your life had consequences for your current life and your future generations, but not an afterlife. Evil was associated with social structures that exiled Gods people and held them in captivity, along with an emerging sense of an evil deity. Close to the time of Jesus an understanding of life after death begins to emerge. Sheol/Hell now becomes a place of punishment for those who have failed to live righteous lives. Evil is now recognised as a place (Hell), as a person (Devil), and as social structures (Roman Empire). Scripture and subsequent Church teaching tells us that evil is still very present in the world and that we need to be vigilant of its many manifestations. Often it may seem quite benign, but its purpose is to undermine that which brings the abundance of life Christ promised us. Any state that sanctions or legitimises death as an outcome for its members, is as evil today as it was in the time of Jesus. In 1961 our Government did away with state sanctioned death for a criminal act. It chose life over death for the people of New Zealand, irrespective of the circumstance. Now it seems disposed towards promoting death over life in certain circumstances. Little good will come of this. VISION STATEMENT

Pompallier Catholic College is a Catholic community with a Marist charism that challenges all students to excel in their endeavours. We promote Christian values, excellence in learning and quality relationships to enable students to be outstanding citizens. Our College shall be a place where

all “...encounter the living God who in Jesus Christ reveals his transforming love and truth”.

In the last few weeks I have been reading a book by Fleming Rutledge titled, “The Crucifixion: Understanding the Death of Jesus Christ.” This excellent book helped to guide and inform the following reflection.

Our politically correct world does not readily provide a place for a God of wrath. Over the last fifty plus years, God has been sanitised into a loving, respectful, accepting, caring, tolerant and forgiving deity. It is a nice benign image that generates a “feel good” relationship with a peaceful and peace-loving God, who is much like a beloved grandparent. God is out there somewhere doing his thing for humanity and creation. Our task is to join in to help bring about his reign of justice, peace and love, to enable our world to be a better place.

How you had lived your life had consequences for your current life and your future

generations, but not an afterlife. Evil was associated with social structures that exiled God’s people and held them in captivity, along with an emerging sense of an evil deity.

YEAR 9 FRENCH CAFE TRIP

The Year 9 French class tried out their French skills at the Bistro de Paris in town recently.

They had to order all of their food in French, otherwise they wouldn't get fed! Luckily all were very successful and they all really enjoyed eating baguette and crepes, with some even trying escargots!

Many thanks to the Bistro de Paris (opposite the Police Station).

STUDENT ID / BUS PASS ...

If your child loses their pass, they can apply for a replacement by paying $6.00 to the College office.

A temporary bus pass will be issued, and a new pass will be ordered for them. As these are printed off-site, this can take up to a week to arrive.

FR BRIAN WYSOCKI VISITS THE COLLEGE ...

We were very privileged and honoured to have

Fr Brian Wysocki (sm) visit us last week. Fr Brian

was the first Rector of Pompallier Catholic

College from 1971 - 1976, and it was fitting that

he joined us to celebrate the Founders Day

Mass of Jean Baptist with our whole school.

Some of our staff were students here when Fr

Brian was Rector, so it was certainly a

wonderful trip down memory lane for them!

Here, Fr Wysocki is pictured with our current

Principal, Mr Stanton.
