INSIDE THIS ISSUE:

What Did We Learned Last Month?

If you eat a huge plate of desserts without any dinner you get a sugar rush that keeps you up all night. We held the 2nd Annual Sweets for the Sweet contest at the February General Meeting. Couple of things we learned about our membership-we LOVE to eat sweets, and we have some very talented folks that can make incredible desserts! Once again, we had a difficult choice determining a winner from all of the delicious desserts that were entered. After the judging, Jeannie Booze and Marilyn Knol tied for first, so the winner was decided by a vote of the membership, and Marilyn’s Rum Cake edged out Jeannie’s yummy chocolate dessert by a single vote. We learned that if you want to win a dessert contest in this club, add some liquor to it.

We didn’t have a winner in the 50/50 drawing for the second consecutive month, so the $246 jackpot (Wow!) will carry over to the March meeting. We learned that we not only have some unlucky mem-bers, but the entire crowd turned on Mary Garrett and some were actually cheering when she failed to win the jackpot. Mary is the nicest, sweetest person, and we learned that nobody cares about that when it comes to $$$.

The “Water Features of the Month” segment taught us a couple of things. First, your water feature is much more impressive if you actually bring a visual presentation. Judith Hogan did, and the crowd was floored. Russell Patton forgot his, and he had to resort to storytelling and tap dancing for his presentation, which, while entertaining, was not as effective as Judith’s presentation. We also learned that Judith is really funny!

We learned that we have fantastic support from our vendors. Many of them are helping us with our booth we will have at the Spring Landscape Show March 1-3 at the Cox Convention Center. I encour-age you all to come out to the show and stop by our booth. A LOT of your fellow members are work-ing hard to make this a huge success.

Here are some things you will learn as you read the newsletter: We have a new board member. Tom Thompson has accepted the position of Members Helping Members Chair. Thanks Tom! And we have started a new article in the newsletter-“Vendor of the Month”. This month’s selected vendor is Pond Pro. Mike Miller will be at the March meeting-come talk to him about some of the many chang-es they’ve made at Pond Pro. And the deadline to receive an extra Pond Point for entering your pond early in the Public Pond Tour is March 15. Enter it now and get that point plus the FIVE points for putting your pond on tour.

We’ve learned that you should set your goals high. We are well on our way to reaching our goal of 40 ponds on the Public Pond Tour. Many members have already signed up their ponds. And we also had FIVE new members join the club at the Feb Meeting, and THREE of them signed up their pond for the tour!! Outstanding, and thanks to those who sponsored them. The sponsors learned that they get THREE Pond Points for bringing in new members! Here’s another goal we want to achieve-100% membership renewals. If you haven’t already renewed your membership, please do so now. You don’t want to miss out on all the FUN we are going to have this year!

And I already knew that we have a pretty great club!

Joe Hogan WGSO President

(1/2 Epsom Salt & 1/2 sugar). Dissolve 1 Tablespoon mixture into a gallon of water plus plant food and use it to feed you plants twice a month.

Why Do Butterflies Gather Around Puddles? On sunny days after a rain, you may see butterflies gathering around the edges of mud puddles. What could they be doing?

Answer: Butterflies get most of their nutrition from flower nectar. Though rich in sugar, nectar lacks some important nutrients the butter-flies need for reproduction. For those, butterflies visit puddles.

By sipping moisture from mud puddles, butterflies take in salts and minerals from the soil. This behavior is called puddling, and is mostly seen in male butterflies. That's because males incorporate those extra salts and minerals into their sperm.

When butterflies mate, the nutrients are trans-ferred to the female through the sperm. These extra salts and minerals improve the viability of the female's eggs, increasing the couple's chances of passing on their genes to another generation.

Attract Butterflies With A Damp Salt Lick

Did you know that butterflies taste with their feet? Create a salt lick for these beauties by combining 1 gal. of sand with 3/4 cup of rock salt, kosher salt, or sea salt (you can even add some wood ashes) and keep it moist.

Use a dripping hose, drip irrigation line, or place your bird bath on bare soil to create a damp area. Use a wide range of native plants and throw in a few adaptives, add herbs and grasses and you will have a garden filled with jewels in flight or perched on a blossom having lunch.

RAIN GARDEN Continued from Page 4

GROOM YOUR TOOLS: If you haven’t already done so over the winter months, now is the time to spend a few hours grooming the gardening tools stored in the basement, garage, or shed. Cutting tools, such as hand pruners and flower

shears, can be sharpened on a high quality Arkansas (pronounced R-kansas) sharpening stone, then lightly oiled with penetrating oil, which cleans and prevents corrosion.

Many digging tools work more efficiently after being cleaned, sharpened, and oiled. To sharpen a hoe, spade, trowel, or other digging tool with a single beveled edge, use a mill file about 8 inches long equipped with a strong, comfortable handle. Set the tool in a vise or hold it securely on a flat surface. Hold the file at about a 30-degree angle and draw the file across the beveled surface of the blade, pushing the file away from your body. When the cutting edge is sharp, turn the tool over and use the file to remove any burrs from the back edge. Lubricate the blade lightly with penetrating oil and wipe with a clean rag. (The Myriad Gardens has a TOOL SHARPENING Workshop on Mach 16 - $10 for 3 Items)

MEMBER RECOGNITION

“Showcase Your Yard” was intro-duced in December, but WGSO is taking it in a somewhat different

direction. Since we all have spent so much time, ener-gy, and money creating our private aquatic oasis, why not share it with your fellow WGSO members? WGSO wants to see ALL members yards, even if you aren’t on a Public/Members’ Bus Pond Tour.

HOW? Simple. WGSO Historian, Dennis Wagner, will stop by your house and take a video of your yard high-lighting your water features and get some background information. If you aren’t comfortable speaking into the camera, Dennis will do the talking. NO ADDRESSES will be mentioned, so your privacy is protected.

Dennis will compile the videos onto discs , thus creating WGSO MEMBERS VIDEO TOURS which will be shown at General Meetings and can be checked out through the WGSO Library.

Contact Dennis Wagner 265-3996 [email protected] to include your yard on the WGSO VIDEO TOUR. Sign Up Sheet will be at each WGSO General Meeting.

Dry creek beds are a great solution to areas that plants and grass won’t grow. They will channel rainwater and deter erosion. Dry creek beds suggest the presence water in the gar-den and offer a cooling effect.

Build a dry creek bed that ap-pears as though a rushing stream deposited a variety of sizes, textures and colors of rock and settled them in one flowing direction. Add a rain garden to enhance the area.

DIY ADJUSTABLE CANOPY Perfect for plants,

ponds, pets, & people! Canvas or shade cloth with

Worm Tower: Drill holes in bottom half of 3’ PVC pipe. Bury drilled portion in soil. Place kitchen scraps in pipe & cover with pot. Worms will eat the scraps and transfer the nutrients into the soil.

Baking soda neutralizes the ph in the soil and nothing will grow there. Use baking soda

around all of the edges of flower beds to keep the grass and weeds from growing into beds.

Just sprinkle it onto the soil so that it covers it lightly. Do this twice a year – spring and

fall. Sodium bicarb adjusts the healthy soil balance by salting the soil and killing beneficial

organisms and plants therefore acting as a natural way to kill crab grass and other weeds.
