Many Pooch Mobile customers ask should they have their dog shaved for the summer. The answer is simple...Never shave a double coated breed! A dogs coat provides insulation from the heat, cold and sun.

Shaving your dog’s coat is actually interrupting the natural shedding process. Many people who have shaved their dogs coat in the past have experienced patches of the hair that never grows back or the hair grows back a different texture and often almost fuzzy looking. By interrupting the dog’s natural shedding cycle you may find you can actually be producing MORE shedding...and no house needs that.

So in order to address the dog problem, you have to assess the way you are interacting with your dog and the kind of activity your dog gets on a daily basis.

Try these simple techniques at home…Ignore the hyper dog behavior: Dogs seek attention from you. By paying attention to the hyper dog during outbursts, you’re reinforcing the problematic behavior you’re trying to eliminate. The next time your dog is jumping or nipping at you in an overexcited way, give it a try: no touch, no talk, no eye contact – simply ignore until he calms down.

Go for a dog walk to redirect dog’s high energy: If your dog has a lot of built-up energy, a really vigorous dog walk is an excellent way to redirect it. Taking your dog to a doggy day care a couple times a week is another great way for your dog to release built-up energy…plus a great place for socialization.

Are you stressing out over an argument, or burdened with worries of the workweek? Six Tips for Safer, Happier Dog WalkingWalking with your dog strengthens your bond, allows your dog’s world to expand and provides both of you with exercise and fresh air.

1. Use a standard 4-6 foot leash -Regular length leashes allow you to have the most control over your dog, especially if they are leash pullers. Retractable leashes are not recommended due to a growing number of finger injuries when dogs suddenly pull away.

2. Be prepared for your walk - Poop bags, treats, house keys, and water if going for an extra long walk or hike.

3. Obey leash laws - Unless you’re visiting a designated off-leash area, such as a dog park, please obey leash laws in your community. Leash laws are there to keep everyone safe.

4. Give your full attention - Put down your cell phone. Pay attention to your dog and the world around you. Not only does talking and texting distract you from all the wonderful, tiny details that your dog is sure to point out to you, but it’s safer too.

5. Ask permission before approaching other dogs - If you see a new canine friend you’d like to meet, always ask permission before your approach them...on or off leash.

It’s Puppy Love for the Record BooksThe Labrador retriever was the nation’s most popular dog breed last year for a 23rd year in a row, announced by the American Kennel Club.

That’s the longest any breed has been top dog since the organization’s 1884 founding.

German shepherds, golden retrievers, beagles and bulldogs are holding steady in the top-five pack, with Yorkshire terriers, boxers, poodles, Rottweiler’s and dachshunds continuing to round out the leading 10, which mirrors last year. However, the comical French bulldog is newly on their heels after a decade-long popularity spurt.
