INTRODUCTIONThe booklet is part of an award administered by the British Lacrosse Coaching Foundation. The teachers award combines practical and theoretical sessions. This booklet is designed to assist teachers in the delivery of the game of Pop lacrosse in both curriculum and extra curriculum time. The course and booklet explains the funda-mental strategies and principles of lacrosse. They also cover the basic techniques and the essential rule structure of Pop lacrosse. The teacher will be helped in the understanding of the game of Pop lacrosse in relation to other sports on the curriculum and how the sport of lacrosse is able to achieve the assessment targets set within the national curricu-lum guidelines. There is an accompanying booklet - “ Lacrosse in the national curriculum, an educational guide” which places the work outlined in this booklet into an educational context. Pop lacrosse is an exciting, fast, free flowing game which can be adapted for play on a variety of different areas and surfaces, with any number of players of both sexes, any age and mixed ability. Pop lacrosse is a fun game in its own right, but is also an ideal introduction to Lax, and to the traditional field games of men’s, women’s and mixedLacrosse.

FUNDAMENTALS OF LACROSSELacrosse is an invasive team game with the objective of invading the opposing team’s territory by running, passing and finally shooting the ball Into a designated area ,usually a goal, which can be a ring, hoop bucket, chair or any improvised object. Beginners play with an open goal where as the more experienced players will play with a goalkeeper.

INVASION of the opponents territory is more than a simple action, it demands rapid thinking and decision making in order to out-wit the opposition. GOOD LACROSSE PLAY demands fast thinking players and this can be fostered from the outset SOUND TECH-NIQUE is also necessary to successful play at all levels. However every technique must have the ability to be modified to meet the specific demands of any given occasion during play. Thus in Lacrosse, players will inevitably achieve the same end product with slightly different techniques. Games playing is not about reproducing a textbook tech-nique, it is about out-witting the opposition. It is for this reason that the game should be introduced from a tactical as well as a technical one. It is our belief that by stressing the tactical underpinning of the game we will increase the employment of all participants. The increase in motivation will accelerate the acquisition of the necessary physical and mental attributes that is not only a good lacrosse player but also a good games player.

UNDERLYING GAME PRINCIPLESThe emphasis in the teachers award is upon introducing INDIVIDUAL game principles rather than team principles. Whilst the two are fundamentally the same, team principles become more complex because of the greater number of people involved and therefore the greater complexity of the decision making often under pressure. Decision making relating to the individual can be introduced right from the start in a simple way. Lacrosse is a high scoring invasion game. Thus the objective of the team in possession ( now referred to as the ATTACKING team ), is to move the ball rapidly but safely up the field into a scoring position.

Page 5: pop lacrosse manal - englacrosse.s3.amazonaws.comenglacrosse.s3.amazonaws.com/media/2014/05/pop-lacrosse-manal.pdf · The increase in motivation will accelerate the ... player all

5

RETAINING POSSESSION INVASION ( moving forward , and SCORING are thus key princi-ples of ATTACK. Players must learn from the outset to make decisions about when to hold on to, when to pass, when to run with and when to shoot the ball.

The player In possession can:

A SHOOTB INVADE / RUN TOWARDS GOALC PASSD HOLD POSSESSlON / RETREAT

Such decision making is essential even for a novice. Equally every other player must make similar decisions based on the three attacking principles of POSSESSION, INVASION and SCORING.

DEFENDING In lacrosse is usually effected by a man to man marking system with each player taking particular responsibility for one opponent but with some team responsibil-ities. Decisions for the defending players ( team without the ball) also rest on three fun-damental principles - REGAINING POSSESSION, PREVENTING INVASION and PREVENTING SCORING Once again the type of decision the player must make depends on whether or not their player has the ball.

Even at the novice stage defensive strategies can be identified. Usually In Lacrosse a man to man marking system is employed In which each defender takes responsibility for a particular opponent. Inevitably if the system is to work, some sort of team defence sys-tem must also be adopted because not every defender will be able to contain his own player all of the time e.g. the triangle principle ( Preliminary Coach Award course mate-rial)

Lacrosse can be introduced in such a way that the novice is helped to understand the basic strategies right from the start and so is helped in the most critical art of the game - decision making. This can be fun and reduces the frustration that sometimes develop for the less skilled when the emphasis is too heavily placed upon techniques. Once the need for a development of technique is appreciated by the beginner In order to be able to accomplish something in the game he/she will have the motivation to practice and to develop that necessary technique and can immediately apply and use it in the game.

UNDERLYING BASIC TECHNIQUESIt is only necessary to acquire 6 simple techniques to be able to play and enjoy Pop Lacrosse - THROW CATCH, PICK-UP, SHOOT, CARRY THE BALL ( CRADLE ) and CHANGE HANDS.Four are based on every day actions and require only small modifications from carrying out the same action with the hand. They should therefore be introduced from these and not made to appear any more complex.AMBIDEXTERITY in lacrosse is essential. If it is stressed from the start, techniques should

Page 6: pop lacrosse manal - englacrosse.s3.amazonaws.comenglacrosse.s3.amazonaws.com/media/2014/05/pop-lacrosse-manal.pdf · The increase in motivation will accelerate the ... player all

6

develop at almost the same rate. It may be necessary to demonstrate each technique initially but over emphasis on “ textbook “ techniques should be avoided. Most beginners will be successful quite quickly and should from the outset, be encouraged to do each practice with either hand at the top of the stick.

KEY TEACHING POINTS FOR:

PICKING UP • THROWING • SHOOTING • CATCHING • CRADLINGAND • CHANGING HANDS

PICKING UP

• PREPARE STICK EARLY• GET LOW ENSURING STICK HEAD IS FLAT ON GROUND• PUSH HARD KEEPING SPEED GOING• CONTROL STICK HEAD BACK TO SHOULDER

Page 7: pop lacrosse manal - englacrosse.s3.amazonaws.comenglacrosse.s3.amazonaws.com/media/2014/05/pop-lacrosse-manal.pdf · The increase in motivation will accelerate the ... player all

7

THROWING

• STAND SIDE ON (LEAD WITH OPPOSITE FOOT TO HAND)• OPEN SHOULDERS IN PREPARATION• BEND LEADING ARM• LINE UP BUTT OF STICK WITH TARGET• ENSURE STICK FACE IS FULLY OPEN• FOLLOW THROUGH HIGH

SHOOTING

• PREPARE HIGH• STAND SIDE ON• FOLLOW THROUGH DOWNWARDS TOWARDS TARGET

8

CATCHING

• STAND SIDE ON TO THE INCOMING BALL• GIVE TARGET WITH STICK HEAD SHOULDER HEIGHT• OPEN STICK FACE FULLY TOWARDS THE BALL• GIVE BACK ON RECEPTION• KEEP ARMS RELAXED

CRADLE

• KEEP STICK AS UPRIGHT AS POSSIBLE • LET STICK MOVE NATURALLY SIDE TO SIDE WITH RUNNING MOTION• KEEP OPEN FACE OF STICK POINTING TOWARDS PLAYERS FACE

TROUBLE SHOOTING

If a novice is experiencing difficulty, the following ” TROUBLE SHOOTING “ guide may assist in identifying and rectifying the specific problem.

SKILL PROBLEM SOLUTIONCATCHING • BALL REBOUNDS OUT OF

BASKET- relax more- give back more on reception- open face to stick to ball

• BALL IS MISSED - open face of stick to ball- turn more sideways asking for ball further from body

THROWING • BALL DROPS SHORT OF TARGET

- open shoulder more in preparation, stand more sideways- increase follow through upwards- reduce follow through

• BALL GOES TOO HIGH / IS RELEASED TOO EARLY

- incorrect preparation - stick head dropped too far behind

• BALL GOES WIDE OF TARGET

- point butt end of stick at target- keep stick head closer to own head

PICK UP • BALL IS MISSED - prepare earlier- get stick flat on ground

• BALL IS PUSHED ALONG GROUND

- get foot closer to ball before starting action- increase speed and push- head over ball at start of movement

SHOOTING • BALL DROPS OUT OF BACK - prepare higher and reduce dropping of stick head preparation

• BALL GOES OVER TARGET - Increase following through• BALL MISSES TARGET - bring stick head closer to

own head- take more side on stance

Page 11: pop lacrosse manal - englacrosse.s3.amazonaws.comenglacrosse.s3.amazonaws.com/media/2014/05/pop-lacrosse-manal.pdf · The increase in motivation will accelerate the ... player all

11

CRADLE • BALL DROPPED - keep stick vertical- ensure hands / arms work smoothly in unison- ensure face of stick pointing directly at player- relax grip a little

CHANGING HANDS • BALL DROPPED - keep stick more vertical- keep movement smooth- ensure face of stick points at player directly- relax grip a little

• INEFFECTIVE STICK POSITION AFTER CHANGE

- bottom hand not changed first - check initial hand position

REMEMBER - A TEXTBOOK TECHNIQUE IS NOT ESSENTIAL

LACROSSE AND THE NATIONAL CURRICULUM

Key Stage 2Years 3 to 6

Games activitiespupils should be taught to :

a) play and make up small sided and modified competitive net, striking/fielding games and invasion games.b) use skills arid tactics and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending.c) work with others to organise and keep the games going. *

HOW LACROSSE MEETS THESE NEEDS :

The game of Pop lacrosse has large benefits as it is : mixed, non contact, and highlyenergetic for all participants, and uses a high degree of motor skills ( hand, eye co-ordina-tion and body awareness ). It also demands a wider range of physical and mental compe-tencies, by the rules, to play the game between the 7 and 11 age group, than any other single sport, as it has total body use.

Lacrosse examples of what pupils should be able to do by the end of Key Stage 2• Basics ball skills : receive, travel with, pass and pick up the ball.• Practice the co-ordination between arms and legs in a lacrosse dodge.• Receive a ball and pass to a partner - still, in motion, at pace, with opposition• Decide when to mark a player closely

Page 12: pop lacrosse manal - englacrosse.s3.amazonaws.comenglacrosse.s3.amazonaws.com/media/2014/05/pop-lacrosse-manal.pdf · The increase in motivation will accelerate the ... player all

12

• Move with a dodging player, mirroring the stick to impede passing• Find different ways of passing to outwit an opponent (2v1), find the best and worst place to shoot from with different types of shots.

The following two sets of lesson plans and schemes of work will help you to understand how these skills can be learnt. They demonstrate two different methods of introducing Pop Lacrosse to children. The first set contains six lesson plans and is more game orientat-ed, than the second set, which has ten lessons, and is therefore able to devote more time to learning and improving the basic skills, as well as playing small games.

UMPIRE’S NOTESThroughout play the official’s discretion may be used to award penalties for dangerous play or unacceptable behavior. A player may be sent off as a last resort.
