Prince of Peace Monthly Newsletter

NOVEMBER, 2013

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Being in the ministry takes up a lot of my time; a profession that feels like it requires 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. But I am not only a Pastor; I am also a husband and a father with other responsibilities outside of the church. One of those responsibilities recently took a little over a week of my vacation time. I promised Jenni that I would remodel the master bathroom soon after our main bathroom was done this past spring (ended up being months after). When we remodeled the first bathroom we purchased everything we needed for the master bath. This whole summer, and seeing all of the components for another bathroom, constantly reminded us of a looming project. We decided that I would take a week off in October and attempt to complete the bathroom in the course of a week. I am happy to announce that I was able to get the bathroom 98.7% complete. Within the week, I was able to obtain help from a very skilled church member who was able to help me install the backer boards and lay a majority of the tile floor (Thank You Dennis W.). Other than that help, I was able to complete the project on my own. Replace rotting subfloor, putting in new subfloor, new tile floor, new toilet, new vanity, new lighting, new accessories, etc. is a list of the major components in the remodeled bathroom. The focus of this newsletter is not meant to place any focus on myself, but to explain the realization that stopped me dead in my tracks after the project was complete. This realization was how truly thankful I was to God for giving me the ability to be able to do such a major project.

It is amazing how we can easily take the things we can do with our bodies for granted. I began to research the scriptures to find passages that specifically speak to being thankful to God for the simple use of our bodies. The following passages are the ones I wanted to share with you to help us show how we should be giving thanks to God for so many things; even for the use of our bodies to be able to do projects and the like. 1 Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. 2 Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits… Psalm 103:1-2 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Ephesians 5:20 17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Colossians 3:17 16 Rejoice always, 17 pray continually, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. James 1:17

My friends, please take a moment today and give thanks to God for the bodies He gave us. We can do so many things, and I pray none of us ever forget to give thanks for some of the big things we usually take for granted. May God Bless All You Do Pastor Ron

HEALTH HINTS – Wynne Kenat, Parish Nurse

Create Hope through Attitude

Each day we are bombarded with many hopeless situations. I want to share with you 10 hints for a hope-filled day. We can all create hope through our attitudes and actions.

1) Today I will not strike back. If someone is rude, impatient, or unkind, I will not respond in a like manner. 2) Today I will ask God to bless my "enemy". If I come across someone who treats me harshly or unfairly, I will quietly ask God to bless that individual. 3) Today I will be careful about what I say. I will carefully choose and guard my words, being certain that I do not spread gossip. 4) Today I will go the extra mile. I will find ways to share the burden of another. 5) Today I will forgive. I will forgive hurts or injuries that come my way. 6) Today I will do something nice for someone. 7) Today I will raise the spirits of someone who is discouraged. 8) Today I will nurture my body. I will eat only healthy foods. 9) Today I will grow spiritually through prayer and listen to God's voice. 10) Today I will celebrate forgiveness in Christ------even when I don't live up to the other nine hints listed above!!

"Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer." Romans 12:12

BOARD OF DISCIPLESHIP

Coming to a new church is stepping out of your comfort zone even if you’ve attended a Lutheran church your whole life. Where are the restrooms? Is there a nursery? Will the people be friendly and welcoming? Will I like the pastors? Will the worship strengthen my relationship with Christ? How often is communion provided? Is there an active youth ministry? I think that most of us have experienced these thoughts or feelings a least once in our lives. Your Discipleship team provides an “outreach welcome” to members and visitors. We wear name badges so you can spot us easily. A Discipleship team goal is to reach out with a hand of friendship to everyone we can on Sunday mornings and in our daily lives out in the world. Soon we hope to begin home visitations. It is our mission and ministry to serve the Lord and the congregation of Prince of Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church. So how can you help? The next time you see someone you don’t know, approach them and introduce yourself. Get to know something about them. Invite them to class, to join you for a cup of coffee or invite them to one of our upcoming fun activities. Who knows, you may just find a new best friend! Peace be with you All!

For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works

which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:10 In His Service, Susan Little

VETERANS DAY

The history of American military veterans goes all the way back to the beginning of the Revolutionary War in Concord, Massachusetts. A group of militiamen composed of farmers and shopkeepers stood on one end of the Old North Bridge and fired on British troops who were trying to capture a cache of weapons. Since that day American men and women have answered a call to duty whenever our country has been threatened. There are currently over 20 million living veterans who we honor every year on Veterans Day, November 11th.

Veterans Day has evolved from Armistice Day which originally recognized the end of World War One on November 11, 1918. Memorial Day has been set aside to honor all who died while serving in the military. Veterans Day honors all living and women who are military veterans.

Many organizations have been formed to assist veterans. The Veterans Administration, American Legion, VFW, County Veterans Services Offices, hospice We Honor Veterans programs and the Wounded Warrior Project come readily to mind. They do fantastic work, but most veterans really appreciate the personal touch.

Virtually everyone in America is a veteran, is related to a veteran or knows a veteran. You can spot a veteran just about anywhere by their ball caps, jackets and license plates. You can really brighten a veteran’s day by simply saying “Thank you for your service.”

Don’t be embarrassed, just smile and say:

”Thank you for your service.”

BOARD OF STEWARDSHIP DEVOTION

Taken from Our Daily Bread, November 17. SEVEN “ONES” Ephesians 4:1-7 [Endeavor] to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Verse 3

Have you ever worked at a job where you felt a strong bond with your co-workers? Perhaps you were united by a sense of mission, or by a respect for your boss, or by the belief that a prosperous company will benefit everyone financially. The more points of agreement among members of a group, the more they will be unified, the better they will perform and the less likely they will be to fight among themselves.

Christians have a built-in list of unifiers that can keep them working together with oneness of spirit. In Eph. 4:4-6, Paul listed seven uniting “ones.” Think of how helpful they can be to any group of believers working together on the same project:

One body—we are a single family unified for one purpose

One Spirit—we all have the Spirit as our power source

One hope—we all look forward to the same future

One Lord—we all trust the same person in charge

One faith—we all trust Jesus’ sacrifice for our salvation

One baptism—we all have a single identity

One God and Father—we all share the same source of our existence

What a difference it would make if we all could dwell on those seven “ones.” --- Dave Branon

Blest be the tie that binds

Our hearts in Christian love!

The fellowship of kindred minds

Is like to that above. -----Fawcett Followers of Christ should focus on what unites them, not on what divides them.

THE HOLY ALPHABET

Although things are not perfect

Because of trial or pain

Continue in thanksgiving

Do not begin to blame

Even when the times are hard

Fierce winds are bound to blow

God is forever able

Hold on to what you know

Imagine life without His love

Joy would cease to be

Keep thanking Him for all the things

Love imparts to thee

Move out of ‘Camp Complaining’

No weapon that is known

On earth can yield the power

Praise can do alone

Quit looking at the future

Redeem the time at hand

Start every day with worship

To ‘thank’ is a command

Until we see Him coming

Victorious in the sky (continued)

16

We’ll run the race with gratitude

Xalting God most high

Yes, there’ll be good times and yes some will be bad, but…

Zion waits in glory…where none are ever sad!

‘I AM Too blessed to be stressed!’ The shortest distance between a problem and a solution is the distance between your

knees and the floor. The one who kneels to the Lord can stand up to anything.

Love and peace be with you forever, Amen.
