Welcome to St. Rose
We are proud to celebrate the centennial of our church
this year. St. Rose is a historical landmark of the city of
Quincy. This church is considered as representative of
the Venetian Gothic style: a mix of Gothic,
Romanesque, and Byzantine styles. The 1912 stained
glass windows are characteristic of the Munich Pictorial
Style. This style is characterized by almost lifelike
images of saints and figures with landscape back-
grounds.
Before the church was reopened, 3 marble altars, a
matching altar rail, and a pulpit were installed. On June
10, 2012, our bishop consecrated these altars. This
beautiful ceremony included the celebration of a
Pontifical Mass with the conferring of the sacrament of
confirmation and an outdoor procession of the Blessed
Sacrament as we celebrated the solemnity of Corpus
Christi.
In the fall of 2012, we will begin a thorough restoration
of our windows. If you wish to know more about this
project, do not hesitate to take a copy of our Restoration
brochure in the vestibule of the church and/or to contact
us.
As St. Rose Latin Mass Community is not a parish but a
chaplaincy, when you join it, you remain a member of
your local parish. To join, just give us a call. After both
Sunday Masses, the community meets in the hall to
socialize. Everyone is welcome! Coffee & Donuts are
available.

"By the rivers of Babylon, there did we sit and weep as we
remembered Sion." Offertory (Psalm 136, 1)
The Babylonian captivity prefigured our earthly life. Why does
our earthly lot resemble that captivity? Because earth is often a
‘valley of tears’ while our true fatherland is heaven. Our home,
our Jerusalem (Sion), is heaven toward which all our desire and
longing must be directed. This is the fruit of the virtue of hope,
the great driving force of true believers.
St. Cyprian speaks very beautifully of this holy longing for
heaven: "We must take heed, beloved brethren, and repeatedly
call to mind that we have renounced the world and that we are
simply traveling here as guests and strangers. Eagerly should we
embrace the day that will give to each of us his true dwelling that
will deliver us from the confines of earth and lead us back to
paradise and to the kingdom of heaven."
What is Hope? The three theological virtues are faith, hope and
charity. These virtues are called theological from the Greek
Theos (God) because their object is directly God. They are the
most important virtues because they affect our relationship with
God; while the moral virtues affect our relations with our
neighbors and ourselves. He who possesses these three virtues
has all the other virtues in some degree. Without them, we
cannot possess any other supernatural virtue nor reach heaven.
Hope is the virtue by which we firmly trust that God, Who is all
powerful and faithful to His promises, will in His mercy give us
eternal happiness and the means to obtain it.
A beautiful example of trust in God is given in today's Gospel.
A court official is begging Jesus to heal his son, who is at the
point of death. In spite of the discouraging words of Jesus, the
official repeats his request "Lord, come before my child dies".
Although Jesus does not go into the official's house, the official
believes in Jesus’ word "Go home, your son will lives". As he
was still on his journey home, his servants met him with the
news: "Your son is alive". He realizes that the fever left his boy
at the very hour Jesus said to him "Your son will live". And the
evangelist added "and he believed, with all his household". The
humble trust in God of the ruler of Capernaum was given a
twofold reward, first in the cure of his son, and then in the gift of
supernatural faith.
If truly we have Hope, if we are convinced that heaven is our
true fatherland and on earth we are in exile, in captivity, then we
will avoid wasting time. Not only we shall not waste time but
we shall ‘redeem the time’ as says St. Paul. Time is a talent
entrusted to us. It is to be used as a means unto spiritual
enrichment. How many, many days and hours have we wasted!
In what way can we make better use of time? Simply ask
yourself: "What does God want me to do now? All our actions
become means to go to heaven, our true fatherland, our heavenly
Jerusalem.

Protecting God’s Children: Thanks to all those who
participated to the 2 sessions held on October 3 & 9.
Everyone in the community who is above 18 and who is
involved at St. Rose in any capacity needs to go through this training if they have not done so in the past. If you
have done it a few years ago somewhere else, you do not need
to do it again. However, you need to contact the parish where
you did it and request them to send us a certificate that you
did so. If you have any question, do not hesitate to approach
our coordinator, Mrs. Sue Zanger. Call the church secretary
217-222-2511 or e-mail the church [email protected] if
you need to go through the training to suggest some dates for
future sessions. The program is intended to equip parishioners
with the understanding of how to prevent abuse from
happening, not just to the children of the parish but to any
child. Protecting God’s children program focuses on 2 areas:
Gives the facts of child abuse and discusses detecting the
signs and symptoms of abuse and how to respond to it.
