Poppy pinwheels © Girlguiding 2020 Registered charity number 306016. Aim of activity Every year, people join together in Remembrance. Create a pinwheel to encourage Remembrance in your community. What you’ll need • Scrap paper, 1 sheet per girl • Pens • Sticky tack/sticky tape (optional) For each group: • A bucket/large bowl What you’ll get out of it • Discover what Remembrance is and why people take part in it. • Explore different backgrounds of people we remember. • Think about how Remembrance makes people feel. • Make a poppy pinwheel for your community. What you’ll need • Black markers • Sticky tape • Scissors • Paper and pencils • A hole punch • Remembrance stories available at girlguiding.org.uk/ remembrance • Poppy pinwheel templates available at girlguiding.org.uk/ remembrance Per girl: • 2 pieces of red card • A small piece of green card • A paper straw • A split pin • String, 5cm Remembrance 60 mins Give it a go Note to leader Taking part in Remembrance is a personal choice. While the girls are making their pinwheels, read out some of the Remembrance stories and allow the girls time to discuss the different experiences. You could also find individual accounts from your local area. These can include people who served in the war or who’ve helped their community recently.

What to doThinkofsomeonewho’shelpedyouinthepast.Maybeit’safamilymember,a

friendoraleader.Canyouthinkofsomeonewhokeepsyousafeandprotectedthatyoumightnotknowpersonally,likeanurseordoctor?Shareyourideas.

No matter who you are, there are people who’ll go to great lengths to protect and supportusall.Todaypeoplelikenurses,teachers,postalworkers,fooddeliverydrivers,doctorsandpoliceofficersworkhardtosupportusandkeepussafe.Allthosewho’vefoughtforandsupportedourcountryduringwartimeeffortshaveprotectedusandourfreedoms.

Every year on 11 November, people choose to rememberthembytakingpartinRemembrance.

HaveyoutakenpartinRemembrance? It’sOKifyouhaven’t,it’sapersonal

choice.Forthoseofyouwhohave,whydid youchoosetotakepart?

TherearesomanywaysyoucantakepartinRemembrance-frombeingpart

ofacommunityservicetopersonalreflection.Oryoucancreateanartdisplayforyourlocalcommunity!

Everyonegrabasetofitemsandfollowthepoppypinwheelinstructions.Yourleaderwillread out some Remembrance stories whilst youmakeyourpoppypinwheel.

Chat about the Remembrance stories your leader read out. What did you

thinkabouttheirstories?Whydoyouthinkwe should remember these people? How doestheactofRemembrancemakeyoufeel?

Chooseoneofthestoriesyouheard.Write or draw something about them

onyourpieceofgreencard.Whenyou’redone,cutthisoutintoaleafshape.Addapunchholeandattachittoyourstalkusingsome string.

Finally,thinkaboutwhereyou’re going to place your poppy pinwheels

inthecommunity.Maybeyou’llhandthem out to people or create a display in a community space.

Poppy pinwheel

• First,usingtheblackmarker,colourthetopofyoursplitpinandleaveittodry.

• Usingthetemplate,cutouttheshapeofyourpoppypinwheeloneachpieceofyourredcard.Makesureyoucutallthedotted lines on the template.

• Usingtheholepunch,createaholewhereeachofthesolidblackdotsareonthetemplate.Dothisonbothpiecesofredcard,thenmakeaholeinthemiddleofeachpieceofredcard.

• Foldthepointedendofeachofyourpiecesofredcardtotheirmiddle(likepicureA).

• Placeoneofyourfoldedpiecesofredcardontopoftheother(likepictureB)and secure together by threading a split pinthroughtheholesyoumade.You’vemade a poppy!

• Usingstickytape,attachastrawtothebackofyourpoppy.Thisisyourstalk.
