the center-pinch lens cap pops off a little too easily. The lens sports a focus limiter (full, macro-only, and 1:3-to-infinity ranges) and is well marked with a three-tier subject distance scale that helpfully lists magnification ratios.

In the field, we were extremely impressed. Colors snap in the fmder, contrast is crisp to allow unusually fast manual focusing, and the autofocus, while not the quickest, may well be the quietest and silkiest we've experienced.

In our test lab, performance proved as magnificent. SQF scores for contrast and sharpness were in the low- to mid-Excellent range-just below those of the comparable Nikon and Sigma macros, and equal to the Canon's. The 0.02% pincushion distortion at both near- and mid-range focusing distances was as close as we've seen to distortion -free. The macro range produced no comer vignetting. And at middle focusing ranges, the VC system was best in class (sometimes by a hair), averaging 3.6 extra stops of handheld sharpness.

For anyone needing 1:1 m acro ability, this lens is hard to beat. Perfect for close-ups and portraits, with great distortion control and image stabilization, it comes in a relatively light, compact package that's as favorable in handling as it is in pricing. -Julia Silber

some shooters might scoff at a point-and-shoot-like rocker switch for zoom, we found it useful on some occasions, most prominently when we had no other safe option but to shoot one-handed. We also found it helpful for quickly zooming in or out to the extremes of the focal-length range.

One apparent compromise in achieving the low retail price is the 3n's LCD screen. While past NEX cameras have had moni­tors that can tilt both upward and downward, this 460,800-dot 3-inch LCD can angle only upward. Our more vertically challenged testers found this irksome at times during field testing, since it makes over-the­head viewing just about impos­sible. On the flip side, the screen lets you view and frame your shot at waist level, twin-lens­reflex style, a remarkably stable way to shoot that's also very convenient for video capture.

And video is one of this Sony's strengths. It can record at up to 1920x1080i60 in AVCHD format. The footage we captured was great for a cam­era in this price range. If you're used to a compact camera that can barely create a mediocre 720p video clip, the NEX-3n should impress you.

Autofocus speed was mid­dling in comparison to other ILCs. In bright light, the NEX-3n focuses quickly and accurately; in dim light, it became a bit sluggish and sometimes didn't focus properly. While the inac­curate focusing didn't happen too often, it did give the camera a feel something more akin to a compact than an ILC on the level of Sony's excellent NEX-6.

While the 3n's anemic pop­up flash did occasionally come in handy for casual shots,

it's not nearly useful enough to make up for the camera's lack of a hot-shoe. We'd gladly forego the pop-up for a Multi­Interface Shoe, which can accept many useful accessories in addition to flash units. (With its initial, and more expensive, entry-level NEX bodies, Sony originally provided a small accessory flash. It may be that consumer opinion, and not just costs, dictated the change now.)

Soccer moms and field­hockey dads shouldn't count on the NEX-3n to grab stunning bursts of their young sports stars. The camera operates as advertised in this area, but has a top burst of only 2.5 frames per second with metering and autofocusing on each shot. If you limit focus and metering to the first frame only, you can get up to 4 fps-okay for some action subjects, but still not the 5 fps we consider the minimum for sports. Furthermore, the buffer can hold only up to 9 ]PEGs, 5 RAW images, or 4 RAW +]PEGs per burst before slowing down. At this price, of course, you shouldn't expect a camera for serious sports shooting.

The Bottom Line If price has been the only thing keeping you from buying an ILC, you officially have no more excuses left. While the NEX-3n isn't the best ILC on Sony's roster, at this price it's worth every penny. Shooters used to sub-$500 compacts should be very pleased with what they get in this camera, and it's a solid entry point to the E-mount lens system, which has been steadily gaining steam since its inception. Moreover, the E-mount can be adapted to an enormous range of lenses in other mounts, including Sony's own DSLRA-mount.

If you remain unconvinced, or you want to opt for Micro Four Thirds, which still has the advan­tage of a wider variety of system lenses, the Panasonic Lumix GF5 and Olympus Pen E-PMl remain solid alternatives to the NEX-3n. Both of these are becoming long in the tooth, and while this helps them compete in terms of cost, they may not be on the market much longer. So for now, we'd say the Sony NEX-3n is the high point of the low price point.

don't have subject distance scales, precluding scale-focusing in low light.

But there's an upside to electronic MF, and the iFunction feature makes terrific use of it. With a press of this button on the lens, the MF ring becomes a camera control. You need never remove your eye from the cam era or your hand from its support position to compensate exposure in program mode, for example. Functions vary by shooting mode and are always useful.

In our test lab, the lens per­formed well in sharpness and macro capabilities. But we were unable to fully test its native ability to control linear distortion, because it automatically invokes in-camera distortion correction (and probably vignetting correction, too) in all NX bodies. (The distortion numbers in our Test Results box are with distortion correction engaged.)

With some NX lenses, such control can be turned on or off in the camera, but not with this 12-24mm. So if you want freaky wide-angle distortion, you're outta luck. -Julia Silber

But the volcanoes themselves pose few photo opportunities, as most are buried under one of the major glaciers or ice caps. If you are lucky (or unlucky) enough to be present during a major eruption, you may not see much more than steam and a heavy ash fall. The rapidly melting glacial ice causes

floods that can wipe out sections of road and bridges, and the ash cloud can cancel flights for a week or more.

Puffins and Other Wildlife At just 20 million years old, Iceland is a relative youngster in geologic age. Its lack of maturity, coupled with geo­graphic isolation, has prevented a prog­eny of fauna from evolving on its own in such a short time-it needed outside help. An example is the reindeer, which were imported from Norway around 1850 and now live wild in large herds in eastern Iceland. Telephoto lenses of 400mm or longer are necessary, as these wild animals should not be approached too closely

The outrageously colored Atlantic puffin is a living icon oflceland and a favorite photographic subject of wildlife and bird shooters. Over a half of the world's population of the species breeds here each summer along rocky, remote coastlines. The sea cliffs at Uitrabjarg, Breidafjordur, Lundey; Dyrh6laey, and the Westrnann Islands are some of the best locations to find puffin colonies for photography Again, a long lens of 400mm or more will help capture tight frames of these striking birds. Puffin hunting is legal in many areas, so they do not tend to trust humans.

Other photogenic bird species found in Iceland include arctic terns, ptarmigans, whooper swans, white­tailed eagles, several plover species, razorbills, and oystercatchers. Most species are migratory; so summer is the best season to come get your avian photography fix.

While 2o-hour days, midnight sunsets, and extended hours of magical low-angled sun make summer the most popular season to visit, equinoxes in March and September are most active for the aurora. And don't rule out the surprisingly mild winter.

AFTER FLYING into Keflavik International Airport (KEF), unless you take a commercial tour or photography workshop, the only way to see the country is by renting a car and hitting the open road. The airport is about 30 miles from the capital city of Reykjavik, and the smaller domestic airport there can take you on a short flight to other

Icelandic towns. Taxi service from the Keflavik to Reykjavik is readily available.

Iceland Route 1, also known as the Ring Road, meanders around the perimeter of the island and affords easy access to many of the country's photo­graphic hotspots. The 832-mile, two-lane loop road is well maintained and clearly marked with signs,

so getting around by car is a breeze. The official language is Icelandic, but English,

being required in schools, is also spoken widely. Euros and U.S. dollars are accepted in most places, but it's still a good idea to carry Icelandic krOnur just to be safe. Major credit cards are accepted nearly everywhere.

Almost-Wild Horses A cross between the horses of Scan­dinavian Vikings and the Shetland, Highland, and Connemara ponies of Ireland, the horses of Iceland are a stately fixture of this rustic land­scape. They are rather small (often mistaken for ponies), sturdy; friendly; and expressive, with full, thick manes and wide, muscular shoulders.

Although not technically wild, the horses do seem to possess the very essence of Iceland's wild spirit. To photograph a band run across a windswept ridge, silhouetted against the stormy sea with their shaggy manes whipping in tow, is to capture this spirit perfectly It's not very dif­ficult. Any short drive into the coun­tryside will bring you in contact with dozens of these beautiful creatures.

The Aurora Borealis Between the months of September and April, the night sky gets dark enough to see and photograph the hypnotic light show of the aurora borealis at its most intense. For best results, you want a dark, cloudless, moonless night far removed from the ambient light of any cities or towns. 1Wo hours before and after midnight are prime time.

To photograph the aurora success­fully; start with a wide-angle lens set at its largest aperture and manually focus it to infinity Experiment with several 30-second exposures at differ­ent ISOs until the exposure is correct. Depending on the brightness and intensity of the aurora, an ISO of 1000 to 1600 (for f/2.8) and 2000 to 3200 (for f/4) should be just about right. The aurora slithers and slides across the sky but does so very slowly- 30 seconds will allow for details to be held in the lights while still keeping the stars as static points of light. 0

subject away from the main light or tum the light away so that it illu­m inates just one-quarter to on e-third of the face, letting the rest fall into shadow. Angle the subject to the camera: Never have subjects stand or sit w.ith the body square to the camera. Use short tele lens: Set it for 75-lOOmm, but no longer-the flattened perspective of very long lenses can appear to add weigh t. Raise the camera slightly above subject's eye level: This de-emphasizes drooping chins. Dark clothing, please: Light clothing adds apparent weight; white adds the most. Avoid light backgrounds, too, since they define body mass. Watch the arms: Have women keep their arms slightly away from their bodies to keep them from adding to torso mass--€specially w.ith sleeveless and strapless dresses.

]un Ahn takes a look at her life from the top down

IN THE summer of 2008 I was studying in New York. One day, I was sitting on the edge of my apartment rooftop, thinking about how my future seemed uncertain. Looking down, I had a sudden thought-the skyline was the future, an ideal that's also an illusion, and the empty space beneath me repre­sented the present.

I began photograph­ing on rooftops of buildings that were personally meaning­ful-at first, timed portraits of myself looking out, and then shooting downward, of my legs dangling off the edge. For safety, I use a harness or had a friend hold me. I first compose and pre­focus, and then shoot by holding the camera above my head.

In 2011, I received a grant to travel to Hong Kong to shoot at a landmark building in the central district. But when I arrived, security turned me away, so instead, I went up to the top of other build­ings until! found one with an open roof door. Here, I'm sitting on a ledge, and my sister is holding me from behind. It's not as scary as it looks. -As told
