Population Dynamics

Page 3: Population dynamics.g.p mhlawuli

Population

It refers to the collection of individuals in an area.

Page 4: Population dynamics.g.p mhlawuli

continuation

Words to know in the chapter:

Migration-movement of people from one place to another.

Immigration-Moving into to live) an area or country.

Page 5: Population dynamics.g.p mhlawuli

Continuation

Natural Change-net change in total population of an area due to the balance of birth rates and the death rates.

Migration Change-Net change in the total of a population at an area due to migration.

Emigration-moving out of an area or country to live in a new one.

Dynamics of Population Growth

Births, and Deaths have effect on the growth and decline of a population.

There are 3 forces representing a balance in any population on the earth surface. Referred to as the population dynamics.

Page 7: Population dynamics.g.p mhlawuli

Population Dynamics

oCrude Birth Rate-which is the number of births over a period of time divided by an average population.

oCrude Death Rate-Is the number of deaths per unit of time divided by the average of population.

Page 8: Population dynamics.g.p mhlawuli

continuation

Crude Growth Rate- Describes the difference between the number of births and the deaths per units of time.

They are referred to as Crude because they fail to take into account the factors such as Age and Gender of the members of the population.

Picture Analysis

Having studied the pictures above you did get an understanding of how each factor contributes in keeping the population in a balance state. Now let us discuss step by step.

To make it more simple we take the whole box as a area (community)with its total population (residence).

Page 11: Population dynamics.g.p mhlawuli

Continuation

The box is divided into 2 parts the natural(left side) and migration (right side), which are changes that occur in a community and affect the population.

There are incoming arrows showing births and

Page 12: Population dynamics.g.p mhlawuli

continuation

immigrants, they show an inflow in the population which results in population increase in the community.

The out going arrows above death and emigrants indicate an outflow in the population which leads to a decrease in the population of the community.

Page 13: Population dynamics.g.p mhlawuli

Why we experience these changes in population (community)?

Immigration-could occur because the area has enough food and security than other area.

Birth- Parents can afford the baby, or people do not have access to family planning.

Page 14: Population dynamics.g.p mhlawuli

Continuation

Death-Natural causes like aging, or poor services and equipments in hospitals.

Emigration-occurs when there is lack of resources, food in an area, might due to over population. People live the place to a more resourced area.

Study the pictures below (what comes to mind?)

Class Discussion

o Having looked at the pictures above .

o Tell me which areas would you like/prefer to live in.

o Discuss what you think is happening to the population in each of the communities.

o Name factors/changes that you think are affecting each communities.
