285’ DegreesLandscape extension: Viewing Platform

location: Dundee, UKdesign: 2011type: Urban

The 285’ Degrees platform proposes an urban element with a gallery for local artists and students, cafe, reading spaces and a beautiful boardwalk overlooking the unique landscape.

Positioning of the platform is central in relation to the major city domains. The space is ideal to bring and engage students, faculty, residents and tourists in an urban retreat. The proposed form was inspired by the wing structure of birds. It will have a light, elegant appearance that will not be conflicting with the natural environ-ment but rather emerging within the landscape.

Pushkinsky Cinema:Entry to the ‘Changing the Face’ International Competition

An entree to the international competition "Changing the Face 2011". The concept for the design of the Pushkinsky cinema is the “Fragment of time”, which is based on unusual contradicting elements that surround the cinema and are rooted in the history and culture of the city.

A landmark, which doesn’t con�ict with its context, but integrates and fuses with the existing urban scheme. Inspired by the in�nite dialogues that are occurring within the urban fabric- relationships of new and old, historic and contemporary, loud and quiet, light and dark, layers became the moving force behind the design. On the other hand, layers also are representing skin, the membrane of the building, a trace to what’s happening inside.

Luminal SpacesUrban Retreat

location: Toronto, Canadadesign: 2011type: Urban / Commercial

The site is made up of fragmented, liminal spaces that beg to be integrated into the urban fabric of the city such as the historic MacKenzie House and Senator Restau-rant, a parking lot adjacent to the Canon Theatre, and a long alleyway.

The context is a rich intersection of tourism and retail, entertainment, and a university campus. The site had such great potential to be a richly layered public space, with a multiplicity of paths, hybrid spaces, and a more human scale, luminous experience within the city.

Forgotten spaces were reimagined as �uid public space that offers a richly diverse, human scale experience within the city. Multiple paths cross through the site, each offering a different experience. They encourage wandering and dreaming as parts of the everyday experience of a space. Resting areas provide moments of comfort, play, relaxation, a place for conversation and food, as well as views of the site and the seamless integration of art into the urban landscape.

Entrance Pavilion

The pavilion becomes a threashold between the streetscape and the site, it is an inviting, engagng element which draws the visitor in.Intersecting paths originate and inspire the �owing and continuous form and its in�nite nature.

Architectural Intervention

An addition to the urban design, there is a multifunctional building that offers a diverse range of activities to the community. It is a space that brings people together to work, play, enjoy art, relax and observe the view of the space. It houses a café, roof gardens, community gym and an entrepreneurial “rent-a-desk” of�ce.

The wandering paths intentionally pass into the building, pulling you into the main atrium gallery.The generous circulation space is intended to bring the visitor into contact and to provide beautiful views of the art that is infused throughout the building.

Shift HouseRefurbishment, Renewal

Refurbishing the existing structure and adding an extension of the architecture to adapt to the needs of a new resident. The conceptual ideas of ‘shift’, movement and displacement of the new are embedded not only into the planning of the house and visual language, but also into the design of the details and construction. Hence, the gap between the new and the old is emphasizing the break, a moment between the two volumes.

Raw, monumental steel columns symbolize and mark the path of separation and bridge the two together. Light penetrating from above marks ‘the moment’.

THESIS:Revitalization. Regeneration. Emergence.

Location: Goderich, Canada design: 2012type: Urban Renewal, Cultural

On the afternoon of Sunday, August 21, 2011 a tornado devastated the Town of Goderich, Canada. It ripped through the lake side town, severely damaging hundreds of homes and the historical downtown core. This is an opportunity to embrace, reimagine and revitalize while remaining sensitive to the history and memory ofplace. Connecting and collaborating with the community, working within the existing historical fabric and receiving feedback were essential to the design process. Based on studies and research of the complexities the project has been broken down into three major phases that include urban scale design, architecture and master planning adaptations.

The design for the square envisions �exible outdoor spaces, and allows for different events and functions for all seasons. It hosts a beautiful outdoor garden ,which behaves as an “urban oasis”, shaping and defning the identity creeating an exciting public destination. The design strategy is to not only bring the focus to the center, but also to create a “secondary circle”, a connection of the smaller, intimate interior elements that link together through urban public spaces. It encourages the development of the further parts of the city and creates an outer circle of “Discovery Walks” with vibrant moments, places of rest, fragments that make up the overall experience.

Commercial / Cultural

Goderich Performance Arts Center is envisioned as the grounded and rhythmic fragment of the city, establish-ing a new connection between the existing infrastructure and new additions.Building’s circulation, mapped after the wind path shapes the architectural volumes and establishes a distinct walking path within the space. Movement, spirit and the nature of wind also inspired the interior installation and the roof structure of the building. The new fragment starts to defne and inspire future growth, meaningfully weaving the ‘new’ into the existing urban fabric.

Constructed out of a reclaimed brick wall it is a remaining trace, a memory of the past. Restaurant and retail facilities are located on the main ground �or and with outdoor patio spaces interconnecting with the square is revitalizing the streetscape.

Spaces are �exible to accommodate daily visitors as well as host large private events. South-facing rentable artist studios and workshops are located on the second �oor, with some access for the tourists and the community.
