At the Heart of Canada’s and Hamilton’s Business COMMUNITY
Situated at the western end of Lake Ontario, the Port of Hamilton is Canada’s busiest
commercial Great Lakes port and pivotal to the movement of domestic and international cargo
around the world. The Port of Hamilton links Canada’s industrial heartland to the St. Lawrence
Seaway while providing business with direct connections to major highways and rail networks
both in Ontario and the United States.
Its strategic location at the hub of Ontario’s Golden Horseshoe reinforces the Port’s role in the
development of key metal and metal-based industries, which are at the centre of the economic
base for the Hamilton area and the Province of Ontario.
A major manufacturing centre, the Port of Hamilton is one of Canada's largest industrial
complexes. It is for this reason that the City of Hamilton’s Economic Development Division has
recognized the Port of Hamilton as a key economic cluster and a critical strategic partner.

Targeting New BUSINESS
The Port of Hamilton is committed to supporting business development by facilitating and
encouraging increased shipping activity, land development and property leasing.
Two areas of port land have been identified for future potential and are at the centre of the Port
of Hamilton’s development planning: Eastport, comprising of Piers 24-27, and the Pier 14/15
gateway.
Plans for Eastport include the development of new and expanded operations in commerce and
transportation. At the Pier 14/15 gateway, the Hamilton Port Authority is prepared to build and
lease buildings and facilities as interested tenants are identified. This area is slated to become
a high-end industrial business park for companies with a track record of sound business
and environmental practices.

Port Improvements and Recent INITIATIVES
Marinelink
The Hamilton Port Authority and its partners are promoting the potential of commercial
cross-lake freight ferry services. These services will alleviate the pressure that increased trade
has placed, and will continue to place, on border crossings. They will also provide an alternative
route for freight faced with ever increasing highway congestion and crowded rail yards. A
Marinelink between the Port of Hamilton and the Port of Oswego, New York is currently under
consideration.
Hwy H2O
Approximately 45 million tonnes of cargo transit the St. Lawrence Seaway each year and the
Port of Hamilton accounts for a significant portion of this tonnage. Roughly 25% of all seaway
cargo moved through Hamilton in 2004. In an effort to raise the international profile of the
Seaway, the St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation together with its sponsors, partners
and commercial operations like the Port of Hamilton, have supported the branding of the seaway
as “Hwy H2O”.
Comprised of the St. Lawrence River, the St. Lawrence Seaway and the Great Lakes, Hwy H2O is
a 3,700 kilometre marine highway that runs between Canada and the United States. Highway
H2O flows directly into the commercial, industrial and agricultural heartland of both Canada and
the United States and is home to 100 million people.
Highway Improvements
Port facilities at Eastport benefit from ready access to international rail lines and the Queen
Elizabeth Way leading to the U.S. border, crossing at Fort Erie/Buffalo, only an hour’s drive away.
Work is underway on the Red Hill Expressway which, when completed, will provide a direct link
to the eastern end of the port, between the Highway 403/401 corridor and the Queen Elizabeth
Way to Toronto/Niagara, as well as Canada’s fastest growing air cargo hub at John C. Munro
Hamilton International Airport.

Port HIGHLIGHTS
Outstanding Facilities
Hamilton Harbour is a deep, natural, freshwater harbour, which can accommodate any seaway
size vessel. The Hamilton Port Authority operates the port and 200 hectares of industrial,
commercial and recreational lands including approximately 11,000 metres of docking facilities.
The port provides all necessary services to ensure quick and efficient movement of cargo
including: stevedoring, tugboat services, ro-ro, container handling, warehousing, liquid and dry
bulk storage, ship chandlering, fresh water service, fuel and shore power installations.
Diversity of Industry
More than 100 business operate on the lands owned by the Port Authority and the range of
industries located there is as diverse as the types of cargo that flow through it including metal
production, brewing, environmental services, industrial products, food processing and more. As
an integral part of Canada’s transportation network, the Port of Hamilton plays a key role in the
storage, handling and distribution of both international and domestic commodities.
Available Capacity
The Hamilton Port Authority handles the largest volume of cargo and shipping traffic of all
Canadian Great Lakes ports. Annual tonnage has increased steadily and in 2004 the port saw
cargo volumes in excess of 12 million metric tonnes, ranking it among the top ten ports in
Canada. Overall annual tonnage in 2004 was comprised of:
l Break bulk – 1,031,675 metric tonnes
l Liquid Bulk – 554,377 metric tonnes
l Dry Bulk – 10,421,780 metric tonnes
The 700 vessels that arrive annually at the Port of Hamilton berth at some of the 11,000 metres
of dockwall available through the port’s 15 piers. These vessels carry cargoes ranging from
raw materials such as coal and iron ore, salt and sand, grains and soybeans, liquid fertilizer to
jet fuel.
Business Satisfaction
In a recent survey of Hamilton’s port-related industries, transportation infrastructure and access
to transportation networks were cited as the two most important variables driving business
location decisions. Almost 80% of those surveyed, which included companies based in and out of
the port, expressed a high level of satisfaction with their Hamilton business operations.
12
Eastport has been an area of significant recent development. Industries located there, such as JamesRichardson International (foreground) and AgricoCanada Limited (background domes) are well servicedby marine, rail and road modes of transportation.
Approximately 45 million tonnes of cargo transit the St. Lawrence Seaway each year and the Port of Hamilton
accounts for a significant portion of this tonnage.
