Ship Concept 1 The first concept for the ship has been based on the John Pirie Schooner which the town was named after. This was the first ship to navigate the river and investigate a possible port location. The John Pirie Schooner was only 19m long, slightly larger than the current proposed entry statement. The sail configuration has been based on the original ship but simplified to reduce the sail area.

The positive aspects of this design is the representation of the John Pirie Schooner demonstrating the small size of the ships which our ancestors used.

The negative aspects include the large amount of sails which increased the size of the post and members for the ship. The front sails are also low to the ground which may be a target for vandalism. The back sail for this ship design is unusual but reflects the original John Pirie Ship design.

Ship Concept 2 This concept is a three mast option which has been requested by council as per the design brief and as an alternate design layout.

The positive aspect of the design is the larger sails will result in a bigger impact entry statement and will be seen further away down the highway.

The negative aspect of this design is the increased sail area resulting in extra sail material and mast size. The additional mast would also increase the cost of the ship. The structural design of this option has not been investigated but would be similar to Concept 1 which was assumed to have the biggest wind load impact on the sails.

Alternative option:3m clearance to sails and cross beams to reduce climbing

Ship Concept 3 This concept investigates a traditional sailing ship design.

The positive aspect of the design is the maximum visual impact from the front of the ship. The sails are designed like traditional top sails which appear to be curved and this can be achieved with a rigid material. This design also reduces the size of the sails and the direction of the wind load which may reduce the structural requirements. This sail design has maximum impact from the front views of the ship. The height of the sails from the ground can also be increased to reduce vandalism.

The negative aspect of this design is the reduced impact the ship has from side on.

Alternative option:3m clearance to sails and cross beams to reduce climbing
