ADULT SUMMER EVENTS CALENDAR 2013 ART ENCOUNTERS: A FESTIVAL OF MUSIC, ART DEMONSTRATIONS, AND INTERACTIVE ART AND CRAFTS FOR ALL AGES Saturday, August 10th • 1:00 -3:00 PM Locations: Portage Senior Center & Portage District Library At the Portage Senior Center you may create your own sundae while listening to tunes by the Portage Senior Band and Golden Rods, a high school blues and rock band, then learn the basics from local artisans from knitters to wood carvers. The events culminate at Portage District Library with music from local musicians ranging from blues to bluegrass, Celtic tunes to rock and roll. Librarians, teachers from Soga Japan Center, the Modern Chinese School of Kalamazoo and members of the Kalamazoo Book Arts Center will provide interactive art for all ages. Members of the Chinese Ladies Art Club will host an art exhibit and artist demonstrations featuring traditional Chinese art. These events are free and are sponsored by the Portage Summer Entertainment Series and Portage District Library. Free. No registration is required. LUNCHES OF NOTE Thursday, August 15th • 12:00 – 1:00 PM KIMCHI 101 Catch the fermentation fever sweeping Michigan with local farmer, forager and fermenter extraordinaire, Nabe, as she shares her secrets for preparing Korea’s national dish. Kimchi is prepared with vegetables and seasonings, and while there are hundreds of variations, Nabe transforms Asian and other veggies from SW Michigan – some harvested from the wild and all available at area farmers’ markets – into locally fermented and healthful deliciousness. Nicolette Sosulski and Jessica Enget, librarians at the Portage District Library, will offer their picks for simmering summer reads from E.L. James’ Fifty Shades of Grey to Jennifer Cruise’s Be Mine. TRAVELING OFF THE BEATEN PATH AND CLOSE TO HOMEWednesday, June 19th • Noon-1:30 PM

Steve Ellis, publisher of Spark Magazine, has spent the last 45 years traveling all over Michigan and its’ neighboring states searching for interesting and out of the ordinary destinations. He will present a lively photographic presentation of some of his favorite spots. Steve will also bring a display of vintage travel memorabilia from around the state. Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner is a 1967 groundbreaking movie about an interracial romantic relationship starring Katharine Hepburn, Spencer Tracy, Sidney Poitier and Katharine Houghton. It follows the story of a young white woman (Houghton) who brings her fiancé (Poitier), an African-American doctor, home to meet her parents, played by Hepburn and Tracy in their last film together. Introduced by Mike Marchak, President of the Kalamazoo Film Society. Rated PG No registration required.

CLASSIC FILM FEST Saturday, July 27th • 2:00-4:00 PMHorse Feathers

The film revolves around a football game between the fictional Darwin and Huxley Colleges. Groucho plays Quincy Adams Wagstaff, the new president of Huxley College, and Zeppo is his son Frank, who convinces his father to recruit professional football players to help Huxley’s team. Baravelli (Chico) and Pinky (Harpo) are “icemen,” who delivers ice and bootleg liquor from a local speakeasy. Baravelli and Pinky are recruited

to play on Huxley’s football team; this requires them to enroll as students at Huxley, which creates chaos throughout the school. No registration required.
